Business
Nippon BS Broadcasting is a certified key broadcaster under the Broadcast Act, providing BS Digital High-Definition Broadcasting (Channel 211, remote control ID: 11) as free-to-air broadcasting nationwide. It offers a wide range of programming including news, education, entertainment, and shopping programs, with time sales revenue and spot sales revenue from advertisers as its main revenue sources. Its subsidiaries include Rironsha Co., Ltd. and Kokudosha Co., Ltd., both children's book publishers, and its parent company is Bic Camera Inc. (TSE Prime). The company was established in 1999, began BS Digital High-Definition Broadcasting in 2007, and listed on the TSE in 2014. It is currently expanding its business domain into streaming operations (BS11+, TVer, YouTube), investments in anime production committees, and events.
Business Model
Of net sales of ¥11,813 million, the two pillars of broadcast advertising are time revenue of ¥8,155 million (69.0%) and spot revenue of ¥2,038 million (17.3%). The remaining Other Revenue of ¥1,619 million (13.7%) consists of program sales, streaming business, dividends from anime production committee investments, and publishing/book sales, among others. Dentsu (19.8% of sales) and Jupiter Shop Channel (17.9%) are major business partners, reflecting a structure with high dependence on specific agencies and sponsors.
Company Strengths
As of the end of FY2025 (ending August 2025), the equity ratio stood at 90.7% with net assets of ¥24,426 million, maintaining an extremely sound financial structure. Interest-bearing debt is minimal, and the interest coverage ratio reached 7,387.4x, leaving financial risk virtually nonexistent. Investment securities were also increased (up ¥1,200 million year-on-year), indicating ample capacity in asset management as well.
Time sales revenue has remained in the ¥8,000 million range over the past five fiscal years, forming a stable pillar of revenue. Time sales revenue from public sports broadcasts such as horse racing coverage continued to perform well in FY2025 (ending August 2025), and program sales also showed a recovery trend in the second half. Time slots with high long-term contract continuity underpin revenue.
Streaming business revenue has performed well, driven by the expansion of membership plans on the proprietary streaming site BS11+ (Original Streaming Platform) and the use of TVer and YouTube. Under the ANIME+ Slot / Anime Production Committee Business, approximately 40 titles are broadcast each cour, and dividend income from production committee investments continues. Multi-use initiatives such as voice actor events and song shows have created new revenue opportunities, with Other Revenue Business (Program Sales, Events, Publishing) increasing approximately 31% compared to FY2021 (ending August 2021).
ENVALITH's Perspective
Performance Trend
For the cumulative nine months of FY2026 (ending March 2026)3Q, net sales came in at ¥8,851 million (+1.2% YoY), securing a slight increase in revenue. However, expenses rose 4.5% YoY due to increases in program production costs and advertising expenses accompanying strengthened content investment, resulting in double-digit declines at every profit stage: operating profit of ¥1,326 million (-14.1% YoY), ordinary profit of ¥1,366 million (-12.8% YoY), and quarterly net profit of ¥921 million (-13.3% YoY). Combined with the operating profit trend over the past five fiscal years (from ¥2,670 million in FY2021 to ¥1,932 million in FY2025), the downward trend in profit is clear. In terms of the external environment, satellite broadcasting media-related advertising expenditure contracted to 97.5% YoY, while TV media digital advertising expenditure expanded by 123.3% YoY, making the response to the shift toward streaming a key factor for profit recovery. The full-year forecast (net sales of ¥12,576 million, operating profit of ¥1,804 million) remains unchanged.
Growth Strategy
Pursuing maximization of broadcasting revenue and expansion of the non-broadcasting revenue base and strategic investment, centered on "Value4"
Aiming to enhance media value through reinforced content investment in genres such as golf, period dramas, and suspense dramas, and anime, together with a scheduling strategy for daytime dramas. Spot revenue achieved a year-on-year increase driven mainly by general advertising, while time revenue declined year on year due to weakness in the shopping category.
Promoting the development of new IP and the enhancement of existing programs. Starting in April, domestic period dramas such as "Meibugyo Toyama no Kinsan" and the Seicho Matsumoto series began airing, enriching the drama lineup. Program-linked events (featuring Kazuhiko Ota, Miki Murai, and others) are also being rolled out, aiming to leverage IP value in multiple ways.
In addition to broadcasting approximately 40 anime titles per cour (including participation in production committees), the company is actively expanding the number of anime titles offered through online kuji lotteries in collaboration with Kotobukiya Co., Ltd. Dividend income from anime production committee investments continues to drive revenue, and the non-broadcasting anime revenue base is steadily expanding.
Continuing investment in streaming businesses (BS11+ (Original Streaming Platform), TVer, etc.) and promoting various event initiatives and new business efforts, including collaborations with other companies. A large-scale concert event was held at the Nippon Budokan in May, building a foundation for future expansion of the events business. The balance of investment securities expanded to ¥3,184 million (up ¥568 million from the previous fiscal year-end).
