Business

Nipro Corporation is a comprehensive medical-related manufacturer founded in 1954, forming a group consisting of the reporting company along with 168 subsidiaries and 6 affiliated companies. Its business is divided into three segments: "Medical-Related," "Pharmaceutical-Related," and "Pharma Packaging." In the Medical-Related segment, the company supplies dialyzers, injection needles, infusion sets, Vascular-Related Products, and other items both domestically and internationally, making it the core business accounting for approximately 79% of consolidated net sales. In the Pharmaceutical-Related segment, the company undertakes contract manufacturing of pharmaceuticals for pharmaceutical companies (including generics and biosimilars), while in Pharma Packaging, it supplies Medical Glass Containers (Ampoules, Vials) and packaging materials globally. Under the banner of being a "true global comprehensive medical manufacturer with a Japanese spirit (wagokoro)," the company deploys high-quality products cultivated in Japan on a global scale.

Business Model

Nipro manufactures medical devices, pharmaceuticals, and glass containers at its own plants (domestically at the Odate Plant, Biwako Plant, etc., and overseas in Thailand, Vietnam, the United States, Europe, and elsewhere), employing a vertically integrated model that supplies hospitals, dialysis centers, pharmaceutical companies, and others directly through the group's sales network. In the Medical-Related segment, the company pursues volume expansion centered on Dialysis-Related Products (Dialyzers, Dialysis Equipment) through partnerships with major providers and participation in group purchasing programs, while in the Pharmaceutical-Related segment it secures stable earnings through contract manufacturing. The company invests ¥26,817 million annually in R&D, pursuing improved profitability through a shift toward high-value-added products and price optimization.

Company Strengths

The company is expanding production capacity at multiple sites, including the Odate Plant (new lines began operation in April and December 2025), the Vietnam plant (expansion and renovation completed), and the North Carolina plant in the U.S. It is building a globally localized supply system through a partnership with a major U.S. dialysis provider, a significant increase in dialyzer shipments following a successful bid under China's centralized procurement system, and strong sales of high-performance dialyzers in Europe.

In the Pharmaceutical-Related business, centered on Nipro Pharma, the company has launched technically challenging products such as sustained-release injectables (a 3-month leuprorelin formulation) and biosimilars (ustekinumab BS). Segment profit for FY2026 (ending March 2026) reached ¥12,096 million (up 13.8% year on year), reflecting high profitability, while capital expenditure of ¥25,737 million continues to support aggressive expansion of production capacity.

The company invests ¥26,817 million annually in R&D (¥17,649 million in Medical-Related and ¥9,168 million in Pharmaceutical-Related), continuously introducing new products across a wide range of fields including dialysis, intervention, diagnostics, artificial organs, orthopedics, endoscopy, and cell therapy. Its medical training facility, "iMEP," hosts over approximately 14,000 healthcare professionals annually, which it leverages to promote product adoption and strengthen customer relationships.

ENVALITH's Perspective

Operating profit for FY2026 (ending March 2026) rose sharply to ¥37,624 million (up 41.5% year on year), with the operating margin improving from 4.1% to 5.7%. However, of the ¥13,504 million in net income, a substantial portion consists of one-time gains, including a gain on step acquisition of ¥5,111 million and a gain on sale of fixed assets of ¥4,511 million, meaning earnings power on an ordinary income basis (ordinary income margin of 1.7%) remains at a low level. It will be necessary to assess whether the FY2027 (ending March 2027) forecast operating margin of 5.7% represents a genuine, sustainable level of profitability.

Interest-bearing debt (short-term borrowings of ¥186,007 million, long-term borrowings of ¥279,399 million, corporate bonds of ¥103,252 million, etc.) remains at a high level, and with an equity ratio of 22.6%, financial flexibility is limited. In FY2026 (ending March 2026), ¥30,030 million of convertible bond-type bonds with stock acquisition rights was recorded as current liabilities, increasing short-term funding needs. Operating cash flow decreased to ¥54,657 million from ¥68,461 million in the previous period, and together with the increase in interest expense to ¥9,765 million, trends in cash generation capacity should be closely monitored.

The Pharma Packaging segment recorded a segment loss of ¥1,585 million in FY2026 (ending March 2026), widening from a loss of ¥272 million in the prior period, with losses continuing. The main cause is an external factor—excess inventory of medical glass containers in the European and US markets—but plant closures, production consolidation, and workforce optimization are underway, and whether the effects of this structural reform materialize will be key from FY2027 (ending March 2027) onward. A medium-term point of focus is whether the shift toward high-value-added products for biopharmaceuticals proves successful.

Growth Strategy

Advancing global sales expansion and production capacity enhancement across the three pillars of dialysis, vascular, and pharmaceutical contract manufacturing

New production lines were brought online at the Odate Plant in April and December 2025, and expansion/renovation work at the Vietnam plant was also completed. Through a partnership with a major U.S. dialysis provider, a successful bid in China's centralized procurement, and strong sales of high-performance products in Europe, Medical-Related segment sales reached ¥523,615 million (up 3.7% year on year), with segment profit of ¥52,338 million (up 12.2% year on year).

Through the acquisition of anticancer drugs, syringe formulations, and new contract manufacturing items, Pharmaceutical-Related segment sales reached ¥81,107 million (up 2.5% year on year), with segment profit of ¥12,096 million (up 13.8% year on year). The company plans to further strengthen its stable supply system, centered on Antibacterial Drugs, Basic Pharmaceuticals & Supply-Secured Pharmaceuticals.

Against a backdrop of excess inventory in the European and U.S. markets, the company implemented plant closures, production consolidation, and workforce optimization to reduce manufacturing costs. It is also building production systems for and expanding sales of higher value-added products such as prefilled syringes for biopharmaceuticals and vials for lyophilization, aiming for an early return to profitability from the segment loss.

The company is expanding the regions in which it sells its proprietary intravascular imaging system, which combines ultrasound and near-infrared technology, and its anti-slip balloon catheter. It is also strengthening its product and technology portfolio through the newly consolidated Gentuity, LLC and others (three companies newly consolidated in FY2026, ending March 2026).

The company continues to implement manufacturing efficiency improvements through automation, promote a local-production-for-local-consumption model, and pursue procurement reform and reductions in electricity and other energy costs. In FY2026 (ending March 2026), cost of sales decreased year on year (from ¥453,702 million to ¥452,256 million), and the gross profit margin improved from 29.6% to 31.5%.
