Business

Kubotek Corporation is a technology development-oriented company founded in 1979, forming a group consisting of two companies: the company itself and its US subsidiary, Kubotek USA, Inc. Its core businesses rest on two pillars: the "Inspection Systems" business, which develops, manufactures, and sells image processing visual inspection systems (the Optics series) for FPDs, semiconductors, and high-performance films, and the "Creative Engineering" business, which offers CAD/CAM software integrating 3D modeling, measurement, and machining functions in the American market. Major customers include FPD manufacturers in China and Asia, led by Xiamen Tianma Optoelectronics Co., Ltd., as well as North American manufacturers. Delisting from the Standard Market of the Tokyo Stock Exchange has been decided for October 2026.

Business Model

The Japan Segment manufactures and sells Image Processing Visual Inspection Systems on a made-to-order basis according to customer specifications, and has a structure in which sales are concentrated around the delivery timing of large-scale projects. In the United States Segment, Kubotek USA, Inc. produces 3D CAD software to forecast and sells it under license, with performance on a local-currency basis continuing to trend flat. Research and development expenses of ¥86,717 thousand were recorded for the fiscal year under review, as the company seeks to maintain product competitiveness through the accumulation of technology.

Company Strengths

The company in-house develops a lineup of inspection systems covering the entire liquid crystal panel manufacturing process, including array patterns, color filters, alignment films, organic EL, glass substrates, and high-functionality films. High-speed, high-precision defect detection combined with LOOCS (Line Observation and Optimization Control System)'s centralized management of the entire process is a unique competitive advantage backed by over 40 years of technological accumulation since the development of Optics Image Processing Visual Inspection System in 1993.

The US subsidiary Kubotek USA, Inc. owns CAD/CAM software equipped with an in-house developed 3D Kernel, deploying it in the Americas market as a CAC system that integrates modeling, measurement, and machining. Unlike tangible fixed assets, software assets depreciate more gradually, and continuous development investment is being made, as shown by software acquisition expenditure of ¥203 million in the current consolidated fiscal year.

The company has a track record of delivering a large-scale FPD project worth ¥689 million (41.5% of sales) to Xiamen Tianma Optoelectronics Co., Ltd. in the previous consolidated fiscal year. Although the ratio declined to ¥434 million (20.6%) in the current consolidated fiscal year, the continued transaction record with a major Chinese customer is a unique strength that serves as a reference case for acquiring new projects.

ENVALITH's Perspective

For FY2026 (ending March 2026), operating loss was ¥112 million (vs. ¥125 million loss in the prior period) and net loss was ¥156 million (vs. ¥201 million loss in the prior period), showing a trend of narrowing losses. Revenue grew to ¥2,102 million, more than doubling over five periods, but the heavy burden of development investment and fixed costs has prevented a return to profitability. Material uncertainty regarding the going concern assumption continues to exist, and the fragility of the financial base remains the greatest risk for investment decisions.

In the FY2026 (ending March 2026) cash flow statement, contract liabilities decreased by ¥762 million, indicating progress in the delivery of large-scale FPD projects. However, the status of order backlog and new contract liability accumulation for the next period has not been disclosed, and combined with the structure of dependence on a specific customer (Tianma), it is difficult to forecast the revenue level for subsequent periods. As an external factor, the risk that capital investment trends in the Chinese FPD market will directly affect business performance also continues.

Cash and cash equivalents at the end of FY2026 (ending March 2026) stood at ¥113 million (as corrected), a decrease of ¥324 million from ¥438 million at the end of the prior period. The main causes were cash outflow from investing activities (△¥303 million, including software acquisition of △¥203 million, time deposits placed of △¥56 million, and acquisition of property, plant and equipment of △¥44 million) and a negative operating cash flow (△¥25 million). The decline in on-hand liquidity is a factor further heightening the uncertainty regarding the going concern assumption, and financing activities barely remained positive thanks to the raising of ¥60 million in short-term borrowings.

Growth Strategy

Three pillars: developing new markets for inspection equipment, expanding sales of the image processing engine, and acquiring new customers for 3D software

Progressing deliveries of large-scale FPD inspection system projects centered on Xiamen Tianma, recording Japan Segment net sales (external customers) of ¥1,092 million in FY2026 (ending March 2026). Securing orders for the next phase and building up contract liabilities will be key to sustaining performance.

Expanding the image processing visual inspection technology cultivated in the FPD field horizontally into adjacent markets, aiming to reduce dependence on specific customers and markets and to establish new revenue sources. Also promoting the acquisition of new customers through the development and expanded sales of the image-processing-type inspection engine.

Kubotek USA, Inc. continues to develop new customers in the Americas market for software products equipped with its proprietary 3D Kernel. Performance on a local currency basis has been flat, making substantial expansion of the customer base that does not rely on the effect of yen depreciation a key challenge.
