Business

Isuzu Motors Limited is a commercial vehicle specialist founded in 1937, with heavy-, medium-, and light-duty trucks, buses (CVs), pickup trucks (LCVs), and industrial engines (Powertrain) as its core products. The company comprises 120 consolidated subsidiaries and 35 equity-method affiliates, and operates both the Automotive Business and the Financial Services Business. Domestically, it holds a 42.2% share of the standard truck market and a 52.2% share of the light-duty truck market (both record highs), while overseas it holds the top market share in more than 35 countries. In FY2026 (ending March 2026), total unit sales reached 565,858 units, with revenue of ¥3,479,074 million. Key customers include logistics and transportation operators, as well as corporate customers in the construction and agriculture sectors, with after-sales and financial services also underpinning the company's revenue base.

Business Model

In addition to the core business of manufacturing and selling vehicles (CVs and LCVs), which accounts for approximately 72% of revenue, Industrial Engines (¥127,954 million), Others (Parts, Services, Leasing/Holding Business, etc.) (¥640,960 million), and the Financial Services Business/leasing operations (¥201,798 million) complement earnings. Domestically, the company utilizes direct sales and a dealer network, while overseas it leverages sales networks including group companies, trading companies, and the GM Group. Through strengthened after-sales services—such as the connected service "MIMAMORI" that supports vehicle uptime and the advanced maintenance service "PREISM"—the company aims to capture revenue across the entire vehicle lifecycle.

Company Strengths

In FY2026 (ending March 2026), the domestic ordinary truck share was 42.2% (+1.2% YoY) and the light truck share was 52.2% (+1.1% YoY, a new record high). The group share including UD Trucks reached 58.1%. Domestic unit sales remained solid at 81,741 units, and investment in new and updated after-sales locations continued, centered on the Greater Tokyo, Tokai, and Kinki regions.

Overseas unit sales totaled 484,117 units (CV: 229,898 units; LCV: 254,219 units), with overseas markets accounting for roughly 60% of revenue. Geographic diversification is effective, including CV expansion in the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America, and LCV growth in Africa and Oceania, reducing dependence on any single market. The company operates local production and sales bases in Thailand, South Africa, Australia, and other countries, building a globally distributed supply chain that is difficult to replicate.

In FY2026 (ending March 2026), revenue from Industrial Engines (Powertrain) rose sharply to ¥127,954 million (+21.4% YoY), with unit shipments of 129,955 units (+14.5% YoY), driven by demand from emerging markets. Revenue from Others (Parts, Services, Leasing/Holding Business, etc.) grew steadily to ¥842,759 million (+7.4% YoY). Through early rollout of connected services such as "MIMAMORI" and maintenance services such as "PREISM," the company has built an industry-leading recurring revenue base following vehicle sales.

ENVALITH's Perspective

In FY2026 (ending March 2026), revenue increased to ¥3,479,074 million (+7.5% year on year), but operating profit declined to ¥203,703 million (-11.2% year on year), marking a second consecutive year of profit decline. The combination of U.S. tariff impacts, rising material costs, increased growth-related expenses, and shipment suspensions due to the Middle East situation caused the operating profit margin to fall to 5.9% (from 7.1% in the prior period). Profit levels have continued to decline since peaking at ¥293,085 million in FY2024 (ended March 2024), making improvement of the cost structure an urgent priority.

The company forecasts revenue of ¥3,700,000 million and operating profit of ¥260,000 million (+27.6% year on year) for FY2027 (ending March 2027), presenting a plan for substantial profit growth that incorporates a ¥40.0 billion impact from the Middle East situation. The main profit growth drivers cited are an increase in North American CV unit sales, progress on price pass-through measures, and positive foreign exchange effects. However, multiple external risks remain, including the prolongation of the Middle East situation, additional strengthening of U.S. tariffs, and the continued downturn in the Thai LCV (Pickup Trucks and Derivatives) market, and the likelihood of achieving the plan needs to be assessed carefully.

In FY2026 (ending March 2026), the company conducted a ¥50,000 million share buyback with full cancellation of the repurchased shares and maintained an annual dividend of ¥92 per share (payout ratio of 47.6%). For FY2027 (ending March 2027), it plans to increase the dividend to a minimum of ¥94 per share. On the other hand, interest-bearing debt expanded by ¥98,557 million year on year to ¥857,402 million, and the ratio of equity attributable to owners of the parent declined to 40.4% (from 41.6% in the prior period). Return on equity (ROE) also trended downward, falling to 9.5% (from 10.2% in the prior period), making the balance between growth investment, shareholder returns, and financial soundness a key challenge.

Growth Strategy

Transforming into a "Commercial Mobility Solutions Company," targeting revenue of ¥6 trillion and an operating margin of 10% or more in FY2030

The company has set a target of 100,000 units in domestic CV sales for FY2027 (ending March 2027), and is working to strengthen product competitiveness and maximize capacity from production through delivery. Overseas, the company plans to increase unit sales mainly in North America, while factoring in the impact of the situation in the Middle East. Domestic CV sales in FY2026 (ending March 2026) reached 81,741 units, an increase year on year, and progress toward the target continues.

Isuzu Financial Services Australia Limited was newly consolidated in FY2026 (ending March 2026), expanding the geographic coverage of the Financial Services Business. Lease receivables and leased vehicle balances expanded to ¥409,818 million (up ¥39,827 million year on year), and other revenue such as parts and services also grew steadily to ¥842,759 million.

To respond to structural shifts such as electrification in the Chinese market, Isuzu (China) Engine Co., Ltd. was transitioned from a consolidated subsidiary to an equity-method affiliate. Local procedures were completed as of April 30, 2026, and the company is scheduled to be accounted for as an equity-method affiliate from the first quarter of FY2027 (ending March 2027). This aims to shift to a more flexible and efficient business operating structure.

In response to cost increases from rising material costs and other factors, the company continues to promote appropriate pricing (price pass-through). In FY2026 (ending March 2026), price pass-through functioned as a positive factor, but was not sufficient to offset the negative impacts of US tariffs, rising material costs, and increased growth-related expenses. For FY2027 (ending March 2027), the company aims for operating profit of ¥260,000 million through the combined effect of price pass-through, increased unit sales, and favorable foreign exchange rates.
