Business
Icom Incorporated, founded in 1954, is a manufacturer specializing in radio communication equipment. It manufactures and sells information and communication equipment such as network devices, with a focus on Land Mobile Radio Equipment, Amateur Radio Equipment, Marine Radio Equipment, and Aeronautical Radio Equipment. Manufacturing is consolidated domestically (Osaka and Wakayama), while sales are conducted globally through subsidiaries in North America, Europe, and Asia & Oceania. Major customers range from business users such as major airlines, railway companies, government agencies, public institutions, and coast guards, to amateur radio enthusiasts. There is also demand from the United Nations, various national governments, and embassies, and the company plays a role as communication infrastructure in times of emergency. Consolidated net sales for FY2026 (ending March 2026) were ¥36,959 million.
Business Model
Core earnings come from product sales of radio communication equipment, comprising the Land Mobile Radio Equipment, Amateur Radio Equipment, Marine Radio Equipment, and Aeronautical Radio Equipment categories. In addition, line usage fee revenue from IP radios (a stock-type business) is growing as a new revenue pillar. In FY2026 (ending March 2026), the company released ICOM CONNECT (Multifunctional AI Intercom App for Smartphones), also beginning to generate subscription-based revenue. The company has a vertically integrated business structure, manufacturing all products at domestic sites and selling them through 14 subsidiaries worldwide.
Company Strengths
For over 60 years since its founding, the company has maintained domestic production, consolidating development, production engineering, and manufacturing functions at domestic sites. It has built an integrated quality control system spanning design through shipment, and this quality and reliability enable it to supply equipment to Japanese government agencies—an area that is difficult for major competitors to enter. The company also has a track record of continuously receiving contracts from administrative agencies since 2006 for the stockpiling and rental of disaster-response mobile communication equipment.
Building on analog technology cultivated in Amateur Radio Equipment, the company has expanded into Marine Radio Equipment and Aeronautical Radio Equipment, applying digital communication and IP network technologies to advance business-use radios. It has also launched the world's first mass-produced SHF-band Amateur Radio Equipment and successfully developed a 24GHz-band module. Know-how in communication across different wireless protocols and the development of hybrid products allow the company to efficiently roll out multiple product lines from a single technology base, which serves as a key differentiator from competitors.
IP radios generate recurring revenue from line usage fees in addition to terminal sales, realizing a stock-type business model. They have been adopted as essential equipment for infrastructure operations by major airlines and major railway companies, establishing a position as irreplaceable social infrastructure. In FY2026 (ending March 2026), the company released ICOM CONNECT (Multifunctional AI Intercom App for Smartphones), an AI-equipped intercom app, and has also begun creating new subscription-type revenue for smartphones.
ENVALITH's Perspective
Performance Trend
Revenue was ¥36,959 million (down 1.4% year on year), stagnating for the second consecutive period. Domestic sales were solid at ¥13,525 million (up 8.2% year on year), but overseas sales fell to ¥23,433 million (down 6.2% year on year), with the Americas (¥11,311 million, down 6.9% year on year) and Asia & Oceania (¥5,510 million, down 15.8% year on year) posting significant revenue declines. Operating profit was ¥2,913 million (down 21.7% year on year), with the operating margin declining to 7.9% (from 9.9% in the previous period). SG&A expenses swelled to ¥13,283 million (up 2.7% year on year) due to increases in personnel expenses and R&D costs. Ordinary profit was limited to ¥3,812 million (down 2.3% year on year), supported by the recognition of ¥428 million in foreign exchange gains. A litigation settlement of ¥400 million was recorded as an extraordinary loss, resulting in net income of ¥2,665 million (down 9.7% year on year). Comprehensive income increased substantially to ¥6,921 million (up 130.2% year on year), driven by improvements in valuation differences on investment securities, retirement benefit adjustments, and foreign currency translation adjustments. For FY2027 (ending March 2027), the company forecasts revenue of ¥37,500 million and operating profit of ¥3,800 million (assumptions: USD/JPY at 153 yen, EUR/JPY at 180 yen).
Growth Strategy
Following the expiration of the "Medium-Term Management Plan 2026," the company is formulating its next medium-term plan, with stock business expansion, North American restructuring, and enhanced domestic system sales as key pillars
Promoting a shift from standalone radio unit sales to system sales including options and peripheral equipment. Revamping the sales structure for government agencies to expand bid and system project acquisitions. In FY2026 (ending March 2026), the Japan segment achieved increased revenue, driven by Land Mobile Radio Equipment, accessories, and other items.
Released ICOM CONNECT (Multifunctional AI Intercom App for Smartphones), providing calling, group broadcast, and voice-to-text transcription functions. Aiming to build up stable stock revenue through a subscription-based revenue model. Released in FY2026 (ending March 2026) and now transitioning to a full-scale rollout phase.
In the North American market, where adjustment of surplus inventory following the resolution of electronic component procurement shortages became prolonged, the company is rebuilding its sales structure and implementing product training and marketing support for distributors. As of the end of FY2026 (ending March 2026), inventory is said to have largely normalized, but earnings recovery remains halfway due to the impact of tariffs and trade friction.
With the expiration of the "Medium-Term Management Plan 2026," the company is formulating its next medium-term management plan, scheduled to be announced around May 2026. The new plan is expected to include overseas expansion of the stock business, transition to smart factories, and acceleration of the new product launch cycle, among other initiatives.
