Business Details
The Company itself and domestic consolidated subsidiaries handle manufacturing, sales, and services. The segment's main focus is the manufacture of Construction Cranes, Truck-Mounted Cranes, and Aerial Work Platforms, and Tadano Infrastructure Solutions Corporation (formerly IHI Transport Machinery's transport systems business, hereinafter "TIS"), whose acquisition was completed in July 2025, was added, bringing Carrier Machinery such as fixed-type cranes and bulk handling systems into the product lineup as a new category. The segment also serves as the Group's production base supplying products to customers both domestically and internationally, with inter-segment internal sales amounting to ¥19,457 million (Q1 FY2026, ending December 2026).
Recent Overview
Sales grew 121.0% year on year, aided by the TIS contribution, but operating profit was flat
In Q1 FY2026 (ending December 2026), sales to external customers in the Japan segment were ¥32,974 million (121.0% of the same period of the previous year). Carrier Machinery sales from the TIS acquisition (¥3,047 million) and Other sales (¥10,042 million) contributed substantially. Meanwhile, Construction Cranes and Truck-Mounted Cranes declined year on year. Operating profit was nearly flat at ¥5,796 million (99.6% of the same period of the previous year), reflecting a structure in which sales growth does not directly translate into profit growth.
Key Products
Growth Drivers
- Establishment of the new Carrier Machinery category and its sales contribution following the acquisition of Tadano Infrastructure Solutions Corporation (TIS) (consolidated from July 2025)
- Steady domestic demand for Aerial Work Platforms (sales to Japan at 105.5% of the same period of the previous year)
- Expansion of the environmentally-friendly product lineup, including the launch of the fully electric aerial work platform AT-121TTE in the Japanese market
- Strengthened production and sales of shipbuilding-related products (such as ring lift cranes), riding the tailwind of the government's shipbuilding industry revitalization strategy
- Improved cost competitiveness from consolidating production of small all-terrain cranes in Japan following the closure of the Barsingerhorn (Germany) plant
- Expansion of inter-segment internal sales (¥19,457 million), strengthening the segment's role as a production base
Risks
- Sluggish domestic demand for Construction Cranes: sales to Japan declined to 97.0% of the same period of the previous year due to a chronic shortage of operators and rising material costs
- Sluggish domestic demand for Truck-Mounted Cranes: sales to Japan declined to 94.1% of the same period of the previous year due to a decrease in the number of registered trucks
- Pressure on operating profit from acquisition-related expenses (advisory fees, etc.) associated with the acquisitions of TIS and Manitex
- TIS goodwill (¥12,457 million) is subject to unfinalized purchase price allocation and price adjustments, with potential for additional impact depending on the final determined amount
- Downward pressure on domestic crane demand from weakness in private-sector construction, including housing-related projects
- Impact of increased US tariff costs on the profitability of exports from the Japan segment
