Business

Nippon Emergency Assistance Co., Ltd. focuses primarily on medical assistance attached to overseas travel insurance, while also broadly developing corporate crisis management, study-abroad student support, security assistance, medical tourism, and government contracted work (EMIS, etc.). Its main clients include domestic and overseas non-life insurance companies, corporations and universities operating overseas, credit card companies, and government agencies such as the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare. In addition to its Tokyo head office, the company has locations in the United States, Singapore, Thailand, China, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Okinawa, and has built a 24-hour, 365-day operational system on a global scale. It was founded in 2003 and listed on the TSE Standard Market in 2012.

Business Model

A revenue model based on annual contract fee income from non-life insurance companies, corporations, universities, and government agencies, supplemented by variable income linked to the number of cases handled and the number of international students. The Medical Assistance Business (net sales of ¥3,230 million) accounts for approximately 87% of the total, while the concierge service contracted by credit card companies (Life Assistance Business, net sales of ¥484 million) provides a stable supplementary source of revenue. Because the company advances payments to medical institutions, working capital requirements tend to increase as the business scale expands.

Company Strengths

In addition to its Tokyo head office, the company has bases in the US, Singapore, Thailand, China, the UK, Canada, and Okinawa (opened November 2025), establishing a system in which the optimal center responds according to the time and region of incoming calls. Advanced coordination for severe cases, hospitalization, and transport is handled by a dedicated 24-hour department at the Tokyo head office.

In September 2015, the company was certified by Medical Excellence JAPAN (a general incorporated association) as Japan's first "medical travel support company." In February 2011, it was registered by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as the first guarantor institution for medical stay visas. It holds first-mover advantage and public credibility in the inbound medical field.

Revenue is diversified across multiple major clients and business areas, including ¥1,264 million (34.0%) from Sompo Japan Insurance, ¥443 million (11.9%) from the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, and ¥385 million (10.4%) from American Express. Dependence on any single client is decreasing.

ENVALITH's Perspective

Operating profit for Q1 of FY2026 (ending December 2026) was ¥18 million, turning positive from an operating loss of ¥11 million in the same period of the previous year. However, progress against the full-year forecast of ¥200 million remained low at approximately 9%, requiring an accumulation of ¥182 million over the remaining three quarters. Progress on revenue against the full-year forecast was also roughly on plan at approximately 24% (¥964 million out of ¥4,000 million), but whether the significant improvement in profitability (targeting a full-year operating margin of 5.0%) can be realized needs to be assessed in subsequent quarters.

As an external factor, the number of foreign visitors to Japan recorded an all-time high for the month of March, surpassing 10 million cumulative visitors in March for the second consecutive year, and this expansion of demand for medical assistance services aimed at inbound travelers is a tailwind. On the other hand, the turmoil in the Middle East, the continued weakness of the yen, and rising resource and energy prices could affect business costs and customers' travel behavior. Foreign exchange gains shrank from ¥20 million in the same period of the previous year to ¥11 million, and reducing the dependence of ordinary income on foreign exchange is a challenge.

Advance payments receivable as of the end of March 2026 stood at ¥893 million, an increase of ¥203 million from ¥689 million at the end of the previous fiscal year, reflecting an expansion of advance payments made for medical expenses and the like. Short-term borrowings stood at ¥1,080 million, maintaining the same level as at the end of the previous fiscal year. The equity ratio remains at a healthy 47.7%, but continued monitoring of the impact on liquidity is necessary in case delays occur in the collection of advance payments receivable. Cash and deposits decreased by ¥167 million to ¥2,324 million.

Growth Strategy

The company aims for medium-term growth through three pillars: business transformation via generative AI, expansion of inbound business, and proactive expansion of the customer base.

The company aims to improve operational efficiency and reduce labor requirements through the introduction of generative AI and other technologies, building a system capable of handling more work with fewer personnel. It will first introduce this in the Life Assistance Business segment, with expansion planned next into the Medical Assistance Business segment. It will also concurrently advance responses to more sophisticated information security requirements, aiming to expand new orders through differentiation.

The company is strengthening its advanced medical and specialized treatment coordination functions in medical tourism, and expanding wellness services for affluent clients (healthcare, well-aging, and anti-aging). In the Emergency-Response Medical Assistance Business for Foreign Visitors to Japan, it will shift into an active business expansion phase from FY2026 (ending March 2026), promoting the development of new overseas non-life insurance companies and assistance companies as partners. In Q1, an increase in sales was confirmed, driven by the increase in the number of foreign visitors to Japan.

The company is conducting price negotiations with non-life insurance companies regarding the Overseas Travel Insurance-Attached Assistance Service, preparing to introduce an integrated membership app for corporate clients, developing new business with Japanese language schools for the Study-Abroad Student Crisis Management Service, promoting the acquisition of consulting projects for the Security Assistance Service, and engaging in sales activities to win new projects for the Emergency Life-Saving Assistance Business. The government one-stop consultation counter business was re-acquired in April 2026, and a recovery in sales is expected.
