Business

TOTO Ltd. is a comprehensive water-related equipment manufacturer founded in 1917, forming a group with 48 subsidiaries and 5 equity-method affiliates. In its core Global Housing Equipment Business, the company manufactures and sells housing equipment such as Washlet (Warm Water Washing Toilet Seat), Neorest, Unit Bathroom, and System Kitchen & Vanity Units across the Japan, Americas, Asia & Oceania, Europe, and Mainland China markets. In its New Business Domain, the company develops fine ceramic products such as electrostatic chucks for semiconductor manufacturing equipment, achieving rapid growth amid expanding AI-related demand. Major customers range widely, from homeowners and contractors in the housing construction and remodeling market to semiconductor device manufacturers.

Business Model

In the Global Housing Equipment Business, the company manufactures high-value-added products equipped with proprietary water-saving, anti-fouling, and hygiene technologies, and sells them through diverse customer touchpoints such as showrooms, e-commerce, and multi-store retail outlets. An after-sales service network (TOTO Maintenance Co., Ltd., etc.) supports long-term relationships with customers. In the New Business Domain, technology development in collaboration with semiconductor manufacturing equipment makers supplies ceramic consumable parts for which replacement demand arises continuously, achieving a high operating margin of 42.9%.

Company Strengths

"Washlet" is recognized both domestically and internationally as synonymous with warm water washing toilet seats, capturing growing demand in the mid- to high-end market in the Americas Business, achieving sales growth of 7.3% year-on-year. It has received the iF Design Award for 13 consecutive years, with its fusion of design and functionality earning international acclaim. The brand equity built through years of market development is a unique competitive advantage that is difficult for competitors to replicate in a short period of time.

The Ceramics Business achieved sales of ¥67,414 million (+34.0% year-on-year) and operating income of ¥28,943 million (operating margin of 42.9%) in FY2026 (ending March 2026). The fine ceramics technology centered on Electrostatic Chucks is a one-of-a-kind technology cultivated through long-term collaboration with semiconductor manufacturing equipment makers, and a highly efficient production system through smart factory implementation has also been established.

The company has manufacturing and sales bases in Japan, the Americas, Asia & Oceania, Mainland China, and Europe, with Vietnam and Thailand functioning as global supply bases. In the Americas Business, a new factory building in Morrow, Georgia began operations in November 2025, expanding production capacity to 150% of the previous level. With ¥26,296 million invested in research and development, the company continues to achieve ongoing product innovation across the three technology axes of ergonomics, fluid control, and surface control.

ENVALITH's Perspective

In FY2026 (ending March 2026), the Ceramics Business achieved rapid expansion with net sales up 34.0% year on year and operating profit up 41.7% year on year, contributing ¥28,943 million to consolidated operating profit of ¥53,759 million—approaching more than half of the total. While the external factor of expanding global AI demand serves as a tailwind, the technological superiority of the Electrostatic Chuck and the stability of replacement demand underpin the sustainability of earnings. Even in the FY2027 (ending March 2027) forecast, operating profit of ¥60,000 million (up 11.6% year on year) is planned, making the continued growth of the Ceramics Business key to overall company performance.

The Mainland China Business continued to deteriorate in FY2026 (ending March 2026), with net sales of ¥53,863 million (down 19.5% year on year) and an operating loss of ¥6,934 million (widening from a loss of ¥3,554 million in the previous period). Amid the headwind of stagnation in the Chinese housing market (an external factor), the company is pursuing structural reforms, including the closure of two sanitary ware plants and optimization of personnel structure. While management has set a target of achieving profitability within FY2026, market uncertainty remains high, and the effectiveness of the reforms and the probability of achieving profitability will be key focal points for evaluation.

The Japan Housing Equipment Business continued to see declining sales and profit in FY2026 (ending March 2026), with net sales of ¥479,663 million (down 0.3% year on year) and segment profit of ¥20,253 million (down 7.5% year on year). The business has been affected by various cost increases, which the company itself recognizes as a "structural challenge." While the policy is to pursue efficiency in assets and business activities and provide new added value with the goal of achieving a profit margin exceeding the cost of capital by FY2030 (ending March 2030), the pace of earnings improvement amid continued stagnation in the domestic housing market (an external factor) will affect the medium-term stock valuation.
