Business

Nihon Kogyo Co., Ltd. is a specialist manufacturer of precast concrete products headquartered in Sanuki City, Kagawa Prefecture. The company operates nationwide across three business segments: the Civil Engineering Materials Business (products for public works projects such as box culverts, Hume pipes, and L-shaped retaining walls), the Landscape Materials Business (products for public spaces such as concrete paving materials, artificial wood, and artificial stone), and the Exterior Products Business (garden products and stacking blocks for private residences). Its subsidiaries include Hazuki Kogyo, which handles slope protection works; Nikko Exterior, a sales subsidiary; and San Carry, which is responsible for logistics and formwork production, together forming an integrated group structure spanning manufacturing, sales, and construction. The company's main customers are national and local governments as well as construction companies, with sales for public works projects accounting for the majority of revenue.

Business Model

Revenue is generated through three formats: product sales (57.5% of net sales), merchandise sales (29.5%), and construction sales (13.0%). While manufacturing at its own factories forms the base, the company also combines this with sales of purchased goods and contracted construction work such as slope protection works. Centered on proposal-based sales to government offices and construction consultants, the company differentiates itself from competitors by securing orders for highly difficult custom-order projects utilizing digital technologies such as 3D data, and pursues margin improvement through expanded sales of high-value-added products and appropriate pass-through of sales prices.

Company Strengths

The structure of deploying the three businesses of Civil Engineering Materials, Landscape Materials, and Exterior Products nationwide serves as a differentiating factor, as many competitors limit their operations to specific regions or businesses. A product lineup capable of capturing both public- and private-sector demand, together with a proposal-based sales structure targeting government offices and construction consultants, underpins the company's ability to secure orders.

The development and design departments have built a system for manufacturing large custom products with highly complex curved shapes, as well as custom flat slabs and Artificial Stone Furniture, by making full use of digital technologies such as 3D data and foam formwork. In FY2026 (ending March 2026), expanded sales of Port & High-Durability Products (RC Runway Slabs, Container Mats, SEED Form, etc.) contributed significantly to the Civil Engineering Materials Business's 14.4% increase in net sales and 58.2% increase in segment profit.

Since 1997, the company has maintained a basic business alliance agreement with Sekisui Jushi Corporation, sustaining a tripartite alliance encompassing operations, personnel, and capital. This mutually complementary trading relationship continues, with the company procuring composite products of synthetic resin and metal from Sekisui Jushi while selling its own products to Sekisui Jushi, contributing to an expanded product lineup and stable sales channels.

ENVALITH's Perspective

In FY2026 (ending March 2026), net sales were ¥16,321 million (up 10.7% year on year) and operating profit was ¥791 million (up 33.0% year on year), broadly achieving the financial targets set for Phase 1 of the mid- to long-term management plan (net sales of ¥16,000 million and operating profit of ¥800 million). On the other hand, the forecast for FY2027 (ending March 2027) calls for net sales of ¥15,300 million (down 6.3% year on year) and operating profit of ¥680 million (down 14.0% year on year), a substantial decline in profit. The main causes are the conclusion of the large-scale port project that drove the previous fiscal year's performance and rising raw material and energy costs due to the deterioration of the Middle East situation. Attention should be paid to the high volatility risk of single-year performance.

In FY2026 (ending March 2026), cash flow from operating activities fell sharply to ¥340 million (from ¥665 million in the previous fiscal year), while cash flow from investing activities expanded to -¥753 million (from -¥311 million in the previous fiscal year) due to increased capital expenditure. Free cash flow turned negative, and this was covered by raising ¥500 million in short-term borrowings and ¥700 million in long-term borrowings. The ratio of interest-bearing debt to cash flow deteriorated to 11.6 years (from 4.9 years in the previous fiscal year), and progress on the capital expenditure plan should be closely monitored from the perspective of financial discipline.

In FY2026 (ending March 2026), ROE improved to 7.0% (from 5.1% in the previous fiscal year), achieving the 6% ROE target set out in the mid- to long-term management plan. However, from the perspective of management conscious of capital costs, there remains significant room for improvement. The market-value-based equity ratio improved to 20.8% (from 15.1% in the previous fiscal year), reflecting the rise in share price, but sustaining a PBR above 1x will require consistently maintaining an operating margin above 5%. The fact that the Exterior Products Business fell into a loss (-¥8 million) in FY2026 (ending March 2026) also remains a challenge in the earnings structure.

Growth Strategy

"Nikko Revolution Towards 2033" – Aiming for sustainable growth and improved ROE/PBR through four strategic pillars

In addition to the traditional road, river, and residential land markets, the company is promoting expanded sales of products for ports (RC Runway Slabs, Container Mats, Cable Troughs, U-Parapets, etc.), airports, and defense facilities. In FY2026 (ending March 2026), products for ports in Hyogo Prefecture were the main driver of increased revenue, with Civil Engineering Materials Business net sales reaching ¥11,778 million (up 14.4% year on year).

The company is strengthening business development in the Kanto and Kyushu regions, which offer large demand volumes, with the aim of expanding market share nationwide. While no specific progress figures have been disclosed at this time, this initiative is positioned as a key measure in the medium- to long-term management plan, and sales organization structures are being developed.

The company is promoting the development, production, and sale of decarbonization products such as Low-Carbon Concrete "Neco Concrete®" and Self-Healing Concrete "Basilisk." It is also pursuing renewable energy adoption and blue carbon initiatives through academic-industrial collaboration, aiming to differentiate its products by leveraging the tailwind of tightening environmental regulations.

The company is systematically implementing improvements to the manufacturing site's working environment, energy conservation, and equipment renewal to improve production efficiency and reduce costs. Cash flow from investing activities in FY2026 (ending March 2026) was ¥-753 million (compared with ¥-311 million in the previous fiscal year), reflecting a significant expansion of capital expenditure, indicating the company is in an investment phase aimed at strengthening its medium- to long-term earnings base.

The company has set a target of achieving a consolidated dividend payout ratio of 35% or more and a total return ratio of 50% or more by FY2027 (ending March 2027). In FY2026 (ending March 2026), the company paid a dividend of ¥55 per share, including a commemorative dividend of ¥10 for the 70th anniversary of its founding (dividend payout ratio of 27.7%). The forecast for FY2027 (ending March 2027) is ¥45 per share (ordinary dividend, payout ratio of 32.0%), reflecting a phased increase toward the target level.
