Business

Axelspace Holdings Inc., founded in 2008, is a pioneer in small satellite technology. As a holding company, it operates two businesses through its consolidated subsidiary Axelspace Corporation: the AxelLiner Business (upstream), which provides one-stop development, manufacturing, launch, and operation of small satellites for customers, and the AxelGlobe Business (downstream), which provides satellite imagery data and analysis services from its self-operated optical earth observation satellite constellation "GRUS-1" consisting of 5 satellites. Its main customers are primarily government-affiliated institutions such as NEDO and NICT, but the AxelGlobe Business also has sales channels to private companies and overseas customers. The company listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Growth Market in August 2025. It holds the vision of "Space within Your Reach."

Business Model

The AxelLiner Business's primary revenue source is contracted research and satellite development orders from government-affiliated institutions such as NEDO and NICT, with revenue recognized based on progress under the cost-to-cost method. The AxelGlobe Business leverages the company's proprietary "GRUS-1" constellation to provide tasking, monitoring, analysis, and other services through both direct sales and a network of over 50 agencies in Japan and overseas. Subsidy income (such as NEDO's support for general-purpose bus development) is also a significant component of total revenue, and total revenue for FY2025 (ended May 2025) was ¥2,322 million (net sales of ¥1,587 million plus subsidy income of ¥736 million).

Company Strengths

Since its founding in 2008, the company has manufactured and operated a total of 11 small satellites, including WNISAT-1, Hodoyoshi-1, RAPIS-1, and GRUS-1 (5 units). It was the first startup in Japan to receive a satellite development contract from JAXA. Through diverse missions, the company has accumulated know-how across the entire process, from design, manufacturing, and operation to license acquisition and launch arrangement.

Companies that simultaneously operate both small satellite manufacturing (AxelLiner) and satellite data services (AxelGlobe) are extremely rare globally. The company has a structure in which end-user feedback from the AxelGlobe Business is fed back into research and development for the AxelLiner Business, mutually enhancing the competitive advantage of both businesses.

As of the end of FY2025 (ending May 2025), the order backlog for the AxelLiner Business stood at ¥9,529 million (up 136.8% year on year). This is centered on long-term projects such as NEDO's "Development and Demonstration of Satellite Constellation Infrastructure Technology Including Optical Communications" (running through FY2032 (ending May 2032)), providing high visibility of medium-term earnings.

ENVALITH's Perspective

Revenue for FY2026 (ending May 2026) reached ¥2,508 million (up 58.1% year on year), a substantial increase, but selling, general and administrative expenses swelled to ¥4,620 million (up 77.5% year on year), causing the operating loss to widen to ¥3,823 million from ¥2,495 million in the previous period. The main causes were upfront recognition of GRUS-3 development and manufacturing costs and R&D expenses, and the lengthening period until investment recovery warrants continued attention.

Seven medium-resolution satellites, "GRUS-3," launched in July 2026 are currently in initial operation, and the start of commercial operation will establish a system capable of capturing imagery of nearly any point on Earth almost daily. Against this backdrop, revenue for FY2027 (ending May 2027) is forecast to rise sharply to ¥9,000 million (up 258.8% year on year). However, there is a possibility of deviation from forecasts depending on in-orbit operational risks and the progress of Ministry of Defense projects, and the status of initial operations will determine the reliability of future earnings outlooks.

The earnings forecast for FY2027 (ending May 2027) anticipates a substantial narrowing of losses, with an operating loss of ¥800 million, an ordinary loss of ¥150 million, and a net loss of ¥240 million. As a subsequent event, the start date for the application of the financial covenant with Mizuho Bank (requiring ordinary profit and net profit to turn positive) has been changed from FY2027 (ending May 2027) to FY2029 (ending May 2029), reducing the near-term risk of breaching the covenant. Meanwhile, external tailwinds such as the Japanese government's Space Strategy Fund (¥1 trillion over 10 years) and an assumed ¥6.4 trillion in combined public-private investment through FY2040 are supporting market expansion.

Growth Strategy

Accelerating monetization through GRUS-3 constellation expansion, introduction of high-resolution satellites, and establishment of a general-purpose bus system

The seven medium-resolution satellites of "GRUS-3," launched on July 7, 2026, are currently undergoing initial operations. Through the start of commercial operations, the company aims to build a constellation capable of imaging almost any point on the globe on a near-daily basis, promoting the Ministry of Defense project and acquiring new domestic and international customers. This is the primary driver of rapid sales growth in the AxelGlobe Business.

As a partner company to TriSat, established by Mitsubishi Electric, SKY Perfect JSAT, and Mitsui & Co., the company has been engaged in image data acquisition operations since April 2026. It aims to leverage this approximately 5-year, ¥283.1 billion project as a stable revenue base to accelerate monetization of the AxelGlobe Business.

Three high-resolution satellites are scheduled for launch in FY2028 (ending May 2028), and two in FY2029 (ending May 2029). By adding high-resolution services in addition to medium-resolution satellites, the company aims to address higher value-added customer needs and expand the service lineup of the AxelGlobe Business.

Under NEDO's K Program, the company plans to manufacture two demonstration satellites by fiscal 2028. Through "AL Lab," an on-orbit demonstration service utilizing the general-purpose bus system, the company is promoting service provision to Pale Blue Co., Ltd. and JAXA, capturing demand for private-sector component demonstration.

On March 1, 2026, the company established "Axelspace Defense & Intelligence Co., Ltd." to begin business development specialized in the defense and security domain. Against the backdrop of growing government demand for space security, the company aims to expand orders through this specialized organization.
