BULL-DOG SAUCE CO.,LTD.
2804・Prime Market・Foods
Business
Bulldog Sauce Co., Ltd. was founded in 1902 and is a sauce specialist manufacturer that has expanded its business domain from its core Worcester, Chuno, and Tonkatsu sauces to include dressings and tare products. Domestically, the company operates along two axes—household and commercial use—with the food service, prepared meals, and institutional catering markets as its primary customers. Its consolidated subsidiaries include Ikari Sauce, Sun Foods, and its Local Subsidiary (Shanghai) / Fu Liu De Ke Foods, and it handles everything from domestic manufacturing to overseas exports and local sales in an integrated manner. The company is listed on the Prime Market of the Tokyo Stock Exchange. In December 2023, it brought online the TATEBAYASHI Creation Center (TCC), an approximately ¥8,500 million investment, consolidating its production functions.
Business Model
Sauces manufactured at the company's own plant (TCC) are supplied to the household retail market via wholesalers, and also sold through the commercial-use channel for restaurants, prepared foods, and school lunches, as well as through overseas channels via exports and local subsidiaries. Of net sales of ¥14,688 million, domestic sales accounted for ¥13,991 million (95.2%) and overseas sales for ¥697 million (4.8%). The company has a concentrated customer structure, with the three major wholesalers (Kato Sangyo, Kokubu Group, and Mitsubishi Shokuhin) accounting for approximately 39% of net sales.
Company Strengths
Since its founding in 1902, the company has manufactured and sold Worcester-type Sauces for over 120 years, establishing its position as the No.1 domestic sauce manufacturer. Its three mainstay products (Worcester, Chunou, and Tonkatsu) are widely penetrated in the household market, and the company continues to appeal to a broad range of generations through promotions such as its collaboration with "Pan Dorobo."
The TATEBAYASHI Creation Center (TCC), which began operations in December 2023, is a flagship facility consolidating production, quality, and development functions. Productivity improvements and cost reductions following its launch drove a recovery in operating profit in FY2026 (ending March 2026), up 174.9% year on year to ¥613 million. With capital expenditure payments having largely run their course, free cash flow generation capacity is improving.
Commercial-use Sauces captured demand from the recovering eating-out market as well as prepared foods and school lunch demand, reaching ¥4,277 million in FY2026 (ending March 2026), up 6.3% year on year. Exports to North America, Europe, Asia, and Oceania grew 2.1% year on year to ¥547 million, while the Local Subsidiary (Shanghai) is on a growth trajectory, up 25.2% year on year to ¥150 million, driven by expansion into Chinese-affiliated corporate customers.
ENVALITH's Perspective
Performance Trend
Revenue expanded gradually from ¥13,301 million in FY2022 (ending March 2022) to ¥14,688 million in FY2026 (ending March 2026), but the growth rate remains low at 0.5%. Operating income bottomed out at ¥164 million in FY2024 (ending March 2024) and has since recovered, improving to ¥613 million (operating margin of 4.2%) in FY2026 (ending March 2026). The main drivers were a reduction in cost of sales (down ¥360 million year on year) and a change in sales strategy. Net income reached ¥2,440 million, the highest level in the past five fiscal periods, due to the recognition of a ¥2,150 million gain (extraordinary income) from the sale of the former Hatogaya plant site. As an external factor, consumer thrift stemming from price increases has suppressed household demand, while growth in the dining-out market has supported Commercial-use Sauces. For FY2027 (ending March 2027), the company forecasts revenue of ¥15,200 million (+3.5%), operating income of ¥620 million (+1.1%), and net income of ¥950 million (-61.1%).
Growth Strategy
Under BGI2032, the company is advancing three themes: expanding domestic market share, localizing overseas operations, and transforming its VC (value chain).
In Commercial-use Sauces, the company is deepening relationships with restaurant chains, supermarket prepared foods, and school meal providers, while also developing new sales channels such as processed food manufacturers. For household products, new items such as "World Spicy Sauce" and "Strong Sauce" are being used to strengthen approaches to new channels including amusement shops and restaurants, as well as to younger demographics. In FY2026 (ended March 2026), Commercial-use Sauces achieved a 6.3% increase year on year.
The company continues to strengthen sales in the western United States and expand exports to Europe, Asia, and Oceania. Sales at the Local Subsidiary (Shanghai) to Chinese companies grew 25.2% year on year, putting it on a growth trajectory. Entry into Asian markets, centered on Vietnam, is also under consideration. However, awareness of sauces among local consumers remains low, and the company is promoting cultural education through more active business discussions with restaurant companies.
Productivity improvements have already been achieved through the introduction of new systems across the group. The company continues to promote DX, actively adopt AI, and develop specialized human resources in sales and administrative areas. On the financial side, it is pursuing a three-pronged approach combining reduction of policy-held shares, share buybacks (targeting a 60% total shareholder return ratio), and growth investment. In FY2026 (ended March 2026), the company acquired ¥985 million of treasury shares, and in a subsequent event resolved to acquire up to an additional ¥500 million.
