Business Details

The only business segment operated by the Kanro Co., Ltd. group. It focuses on candy (throat lozenges and gourmet candy) and gummies as its core categories, and also handles raw-ingredient confectionery. Sales are highly concentrated, with the majority of net sales flowing through Mitsubishi Corporation. The company is also promoting high-value products through its directly operated store "Hitotsubu Kanro" and digital platform "Kanro POCKeT." Overseas expansion is also underway via its US subsidiary, Kanro America Inc.

Recent Overview

Strong gummy sales and a shift in candy category composition led to higher sales and a high margin in Q1

Net sales for Q1 of FY2026 (ending December 2026) (January to March) were ¥8,711 million, with operating profit of ¥1,399 million (operating margin of 16.1%). In the candy category, a temporary decline in throat lozenge demand was offset by the gourmet category and stick format, resulting in sales of ¥4,487 million. In the gummy category, hard-type products drove sales of ¥4,091 million. Increases in fixed costs—including labor costs and personnel expenses due to headcount growth, higher warehousing and delivery costs, and depreciation of the new core system (operational from July 2025)—were absorbed by the effect of higher sales. The full-year earnings forecast (net sales of ¥36,500 million, operating profit of ¥4,900 million) remains unchanged.

Growth Drivers

  • Continued growth of hard-type gummy products in the gummy category (such as Kanro The Strong)
  • Stable demand for flagship gummy brands centered on the Pure Gummy series
  • Offsetting of the decline in throat lozenge demand within the candy category through gourmet candy and stick formats
  • Rollout of seasonal and new products such as the Kin no Milk series and Jururu series
  • Expansion of sales of high-value products such as Gummitzel through directly operated stores and the digital platform
  • Steady increase in the number of retail outlets and sales value through the US subsidiary Kanro America Inc.
  • Advancement of business initiatives based on the Medium-Term Management Plan 2030 and permeation of the corporate purpose "Sweeten the Future"

Risks

  • Dependence risk arising from sales concentration through Mitsubishi Corporation
  • Cost pressure from persistently high raw material prices and rising energy costs
  • Intensifying competition from other companies in the domestic gummy market
  • Continued increase in fixed costs such as labor costs and personnel expenses due to headcount growth
  • Increase in system-related expenses, including depreciation of the new core system (operational from July 2025)
  • Rising SG&A burden from increased warehousing and delivery costs
  • Increased expenses for measures to expand the US business and uncertainty over monetization
  • Downside risk to consumer spending from US trade policy, continued price increases, and the situation in the Middle East, among other factors
  • Seasonal and structural fluctuation risk in demand for throat lozenges
