Business

Kanro Co., Ltd. is a long-established confectionery manufacturer founded in 1912, operating a single-segment confectionery and food business centered on candy and gummies. Its flagship brands include "Pure Gumi," "Kenko Nodo Ame" (Health Throat Candy), "Non-Sugar Nodo Ame" (Non-Sugar Throat Candy), and "Gummitzel," and the company maintains the top domestic share of the candy market based on Intage SRI+ data. Sales are conducted through an exclusive distribution agreement with Mitsubishi Corporation (accounting for 91.9% of net sales), and production takes place at three plants: the Hikari Plant in Yamaguchi Prefecture and the Matsumoto Plant and Asahi Plant in Nagano Prefecture. In May 2025, the company established a U.S. subsidiary, Kanro America Inc., beginning global expansion centered on California. The company is listed on the Standard Market of the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

Business Model

The company has a wholesale-dependent distribution structure, with 91.9% of net sales sold through Mitsubishi Corporation. Manufacturing is conducted in-house at three domestic plants, and brand value is created through product development capabilities centered on the core competency of "sugar science technology." The company is also cultivating direct sales channels for high-value products through its directly-operated store "Hitotsubu Kanro" and digital platform "Kanro POCKeT." It continues to invest ¥839 million in R&D expenses and ¥4,980 million in capital expenditure to enhance production capacity.

Company Strengths

Maintained the No.1 domestic share in the candy market retail sales value per Intage SRI+ 2025 data. Core brands such as "Pure Gummy," "Kenko Nodo Ame" (Throat Health Candy), and "Non-Sugar Nodo Ame" (Non-Sugar Throat Candy) drove each category, with the candy category contributing ¥17,099 million and the gummy category ¥16,860 million, forming a dual-pillar revenue structure.

For FY2025 (ending December 2025), the company achieved operating profit of ¥4,691 million on net sales of ¥34,772 million, representing an operating margin of 13.5%. Increased fixed costs from higher depreciation associated with the expansion of the gummy building at the Matsumoto Plant, as well as wage increases and system investments, were absorbed by the effect of higher sales, maintaining high profitability. Financial soundness also remains strong, with an equity ratio of 56.5% and an interest coverage ratio of 1,683.0x.

Generated operating cash flow of ¥5,053 million, funding capital expenditures of ¥4,980 million (including the start of construction on a new gummy line at the Asahi Plant) entirely from internal funds. With a cash flow to interest-bearing debt ratio of 0.2 years, the company maintains a financial structure close to being virtually debt-free, providing a funding base to sustain growth investments under its medium-term management plan.

ENVALITH's Perspective

For Q1 FY2026 (ending December 2026), net sales of ¥8,710 million represent 23.9% of the full-year forecast of ¥36,500 million, while operating profit of ¥1,399 million represents 28.5% of the full-year forecast of ¥4,900 million, with the profit progress rate exceeding the sales progress rate. The full-year earnings forecast remains unchanged from the figures announced on February 13, 2026. While the high profit progress in Q1 needs to be considered in light of seasonality (such as seasonal fluctuations in demand for throat lozenges), it can be evaluated as a solid start.

The sales structure, which relies heavily on Mitsubishi Corporation as the primary sales channel, carries inherent risk in terms of bargaining power and channel diversification. On the other hand, while there is a description that Kanro America Inc. has seen steady increases in the number of stores carrying its products and in sales value, the scale and timing of its contribution to earnings remain undisclosed and unclear. As an external factor, there is also a risk that U.S. trade policy (tariffs) could affect raw material procurement costs and the profitability of the U.S. business.

Depreciation expenses related to the new core system that began operating in July 2025, increased personnel expenses due to headcount growth, and increases in storage/delivery costs and advertising expenses became apparent in Q1. Currently, these have been absorbed by the effect of increased sales, but there is a risk that external factors such as continued price inflation and volatility in financial and capital markets could dampen personal consumption, raising concerns about pressure on profit if the pace of sales growth slows. The full-year operating profit margin forecast of 13.4% (¥4,900 million ÷ ¥36,500 million) is expected to decline from the Q1 actual of 16.1%, and it should be noted that this incorporates anticipated cost increases in the second half.

Growth Strategy

Under the Medium-Term Management Plan 2030, the company is expanding its business domain through gummy growth, globalization, and digitalization.

Centered on core brands such as "Pure Gummy" and "Kanro The Strong," the company is capturing growing demand for hard-textured gummies. Despite intensifying domestic competition, gummy sales reached ¥4,090 million (47.0% of composition) in the first quarter, growing to a scale approaching that of hard candy. The company aims to maintain and expand market share through product lineup expansion and quality differentiation.

The company offers high-value-added products such as "Gummiel" through its directly-operated store "Hitotsubu Kanro Harajuku" and the digital platform "Kanro POCKeT," promoting maximization of brand premium and building direct customer touchpoints. Continued sales growth was confirmed in the first quarter as well.

The "Pure Gummy" series is sold locally through the U.S. subsidiary. As of the first quarter, both the number of retail outlets carrying the products and sales value have increased steadily. While facing risks from U.S. trade policy, the company continues its initial-stage rollout toward establishing a global brand.

The new core system began operation in July 2025. In the first quarter, system-related expenses such as depreciation contributed to an increase in general and administrative expenses, but this represents an investment aimed at streamlining operations and strengthening the management foundation through data utilization over the medium to long term.
