Business
Tanabe Industries Co., Ltd. was founded in 1921 and is an independent engineering company centered on industrial plant construction work for major customers in the chemical, pharmaceutical, and semiconductor-related industries. It operates six business divisions domestically: facility maintenance work, electrical instrumentation work, mechatronics, power transmission work, and piping work. Overseas, it has consolidated subsidiaries in Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand, and in Thailand it also operates a surface treatment business including plating. The company is characterized by its "comprehensive capabilities," enabling integrated support from planning, design, and procurement through to construction and maintenance, and its "mobility," backed by an in-house team of skilled technicians. Its business fields span a wide range of industries, including chemicals, electronic materials, food, pharmaceuticals, and public infrastructure. Consolidated net sales for FY2026 (ending March 2026) were ¥52,366 million.
Business Model
Accounting for approximately 97% of net sales, the facility construction business operates on a contract-based construction model, undertaking new plant construction, capacity expansion, and periodic maintenance work for client factories. Industrial plant facility construction (approximately 43% of net sales) is the largest segment, while facility maintenance work (approximately 21%) generates stable earnings through repeat orders for periodic repairs. The mechatronics segment provides custom-made automation equipment, with a high proportion of high-value-added sole-source orders. The surface treatment business (approximately 3% of net sales), operated by a Thai subsidiary, handles plating processing for automotive, HDD, and EV components, contributing supplementary earnings.
Company Strengths
The company possesses an in-house team of skilled technicians unmatched by competitors, enabling swift and detailed responses to customer needs. As a result of continued improvements in construction efficiency and thorough risk management, the gross profit margin for FY2026 (ending March 2026) improved by 2.3 percentage points year on year to 19.4%, and segment profit in the equipment construction business rose 21.6% year on year to ¥6,437 million.
In April 2020, the company established the Makuhari Engineering Center, consolidating design and estimation functions for machinery and electrical instrumentation, and in April 2026, it newly established a Project Department to establish a cross-departmental system for overseeing large-scale EPC projects. The proportion of sole-source orders for industrial plant equipment construction rose sharply from 12.5% in the previous fiscal year to 33.9% in the current fiscal year, reflecting the results of capturing large-scale EPC projects.
Following the establishment of education centers in Itoigawa City, Niigata Prefecture (2016), Himeji City, Hyogo Prefecture, and Omuta City, Fukuoka Prefecture, the company established its fourth education center in Ichihara City, Chiba Prefecture in 2025. The company has developed a practical training system based on the core concept of "seeing, touching, and experiencing," and is systematically working to secure, rapidly develop, and strengthen the capabilities of skilled technicians amid the declining birthrate and aging population.
ENVALITH's Perspective
Performance Trend
Revenue peaked at ¥51,842 million in FY2024, dipped slightly to ¥50,832 million in FY2025, and then rose to a record high of ¥52,366 million in FY2026. On the profit side, the effects of improved construction efficiency and thorough risk management continued, with operating profit increasing approximately 70% over four years from ¥2,814 million in FY2022 to ¥4,769 million in FY2026, while the operating margin improved significantly from 6.6% to 9.1%. Externally, demand for capital investment in semiconductors and electronic materials provided a tailwind, while material and labor costs continued to rise. The company forecasts a significant decline in FY2027 (ending March 2027), with revenue of ¥50,000 million and operating profit of ¥3,850 million, reflecting an anticipated plateau phase due to a shrinking order backlog.
Growth Strategy
Under the medium-term management plan "TRY2030," the three pillars are expansion of large-scale EPC operations, revitalization of overseas business, and exploration of new businesses.
The company aims to expand orders for large-scale plant equipment construction for the chemical, semiconductor, and electronic materials industries. In FY2026 (ending March 2026), orders received for industrial plant equipment construction declined sharply by 32.7% year on year, with cautious customer investment posture being a challenge. Recovery of the order backlog is key to performance recovery from the next fiscal period onward.
Equipment maintenance work, mainly consisting of periodic repair work for factory facilities, achieved year-on-year increases in both orders received and net sales in FY2026 (ending March 2026). By capturing maintenance demand that is less susceptible to economic fluctuations, this segment is contributing to earnings stabilization. The company will continue to deepen relationships with existing customers and pursue new customer development.
The surface treatment business at the Thai subsidiary achieved net sales of ¥1,484 million (up 8.3% year on year) on solid demand for EVs, but segment profit remained at a low level of ¥36 million (down 9.1% year on year). An impairment loss (¥2,948 thousand) was also recorded, making fundamental profitability improvement a key challenge. Advancement of overseas business measures under the medium-term plan is required.
The company is promoting various measures to enhance human capital value, including personnel expenses, and selling, general and administrative expenses for FY2026 (ending March 2026) increased to ¥5,408 million (up 10.6% year on year). Compensation improvements were implemented, including a 31.9% year-on-year increase in provision for bonuses to ¥813 million. Securing and developing skilled workers is essential for maintaining order-handling capacity over the medium to long term.
