Business

Shimadzu Corporation, founded in 1875, is a comprehensive precision instrument manufacturer operating globally across four business segments: Measuring Instruments, Medical Systems, Industrial Machinery, and Aircraft Equipment. In the Measuring Instruments Business (approximately 65% of net sales), the company supplies Liquid Chromatography Systems / Mass Spectrometry Systems to pharmaceutical, food, and environmental markets worldwide. The Medical Systems Business offers X-ray and medical imaging systems, while the Industrial Machinery Business supports the semiconductor manufacturing equipment market with Turbomolecular Pumps. The Aircraft Equipment Business handles onboard equipment for defense and civilian aircraft. With 81 subsidiaries and 8 affiliated companies, consolidated net sales for FY2026 (ending March 2026) reached a record high of ¥560,728 million.

Business Model

The company handles its core businesses—Measuring Instruments, Medical Systems, Industrial Machinery, and Aircraft Equipment—on an integrated basis spanning R&D, manufacturing, sales, and maintenance services. In addition to initial revenue from equipment sales, it builds up recurring revenue through the supply of consumables such as reagents and columns, along with after-sales services. In North America, the company also operates Multi-Vendor Service (Zef Scientific, Inc.), building long-term relationships with customers by providing total solutions across their entire workflow.

Company Strengths

With a focus on five key businesses including Liquid Chromatography Systems / Mass Spectrometry Systems and Gas Chromatography Analysis Systems, the company maintains manufacturing, sales, and maintenance bases across North America, Europe, China, and other parts of Asia. In FY2026 (ending March 2026), Measuring Instruments Business sales reached ¥364,908 million (up 4.9% year on year), achieving growth across multiple regions including North America (up 8.4%), Europe (up 11.9%), and other Asia (up 8.0%).

As of the end of FY2026 (ending March 2026), the outstanding balance of borrowings was zero, and cash flow from operating activities secured income of ¥54,679 million. Cash and cash equivalents reached ¥160,839 million, giving the company a financial base capable of funding strategic investments in M&A, capital expenditure, and R&D from its own resources.

The operating margin of the Aircraft Equipment Business improved from 15.7% in FY2025 (ended March 2025) to 18.9% in FY2026 (ending March 2026). Sales to Japan rose 15.6% year on year to ¥35,315 million, driven by the policy of strengthening defense capabilities, and the order backlog stood at ¥89,689 million (up 6.9% year on year), providing high visibility into future earnings.

ENVALITH's Perspective

FY2026 (ending March 2026) posted strong results with revenue of ¥560,728 million (a record high) and net income attributable to owners of the parent of ¥60,499 million (up 12.5% year on year). However, the forecast for FY2027 (ending March 2027) points to a profit decline, with revenue of ¥575,000 million (+2.5%) against ordinary income of ¥75,000 million (down 9.4% year on year) and net income of ¥55,000 million (down 9.1% year on year). This is mainly attributable to the disappearance of the ¥7,724 million foreign exchange gain that boosted ordinary income in FY2026 (ending March 2026), making it necessary to assess the underlying strength of the core business.

As an external factor, US tariff policy has begun to affect the North American market for the Medical Systems Business (North American X-ray TV Systems are explicitly described as facing "tough market conditions"), while North American Hydraulic Equipment within Industrial Machinery also declined 6.3% year on year. In China, Measuring Instruments remained roughly flat at down 0.7% year on year amid stagnation in the private-sector market, with the structure remaining dependent on government economic stimulus measures continuing. The company itself has explicitly stated that "a certain level of impact currently anticipated has been factored into the assumptions underlying the earnings forecast," and investors should be mindful of the risk of forecast revisions stemming from changes in the situation.

The establishment of a new organization overseeing the Measuring Instruments recurring revenue business, the rollout of the LabTotal business, and the expansion of Multi-Vendor Service represent structural changes that enhance earnings stability and predictability, and could serve as factors improving valuation over the medium to long term. In addition, the voluntary adoption of IFRS from the first quarter of FY2029 (ending March 2029) may improve alignment with the evaluation criteria used by international institutional investors, potentially leading to greater share liquidity and recognition. On the other hand, there is also a risk that changes in accounting treatment associated with the IFRS transition could temporarily reduce the comparability of performance figures.

Growth Strategy

A three-pronged strategy of expanding recurring revenue, strengthening overseas production bases, and launching AI-enabled new products

A new organization overseeing the Measuring Instruments recurring business was established in FY2026 (ending March 2026). In addition to the two pillars of after-sales service and reagent/consumable sales, the company aims to maximize the value provided across the entire product lifetime through expansion of Multi-Vendor Service, advancement of AI/IoT-enabled maintenance, and development of the LabTotal business.

In North America, a new R&D center has been established in San Francisco to advance joint development with customers. In China, a production base for Turbomolecular Pumps has been launched. In India, the company is proceeding with a response to the Make in India policy, including construction of a new plant, to strengthen contributions to the pharmaceutical, contract analysis, next-generation mobility, battery, and environmental markets.

The company is advancing, in parallel, innovation of analysis processes through the embedding of AI technology into products and systems (launch of new products utilizing AI robotics), and the advancement of factory operations and management through the introduction of information systems and AI. It also aims to improve capital efficiency using ROIC as a key indicator.

The company is promoting the expansion of high-throughput mass spectrometry systems for the clinical market and expanding its reagent lineup, as well as expanding MALDI microbial identification systems for infectious disease testing. In Medical Systems, the company continues to launch new products integrating AI Image Analysis and IoT technology and to strengthen after-sales service, while maintaining strong growth in other Asian regions (up 16.7% year on year).

The company plans to voluntarily adopt IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards) in place of Japanese GAAP starting from the first quarter of FY2029 (ending March 2029). The aim is to improve the international comparability of financial information in capital markets and strengthen appeal to global institutional investors.
