Business

WORKMAN, founded in 1982, is a specialty retail chain for work clothing and work-related products, operating 1,094 stores across all 47 prefectures of Japan on a franchise-based system. Its core customer base consists of professional craftsmen and construction/skilled laborers, but the company is expanding its customer base to general consumers and women through the development of new store formats such as WORKMAN Plus, WORKMAN Colors, and #WORKMAN Joshi (WORKMAN Women). Its product lineup spans six categories including working wear, casual wear, family apparel, footwear, and work-related products, with a strength in high-function, low-price products backed by a PB (Private Brand) Products ratio of 71.9%. As a core specialty store within the Beisia Group, the company positions low-cost management, data-driven management, and standardization as the pillars of its management strategy.

Business Model

Revenue is structured on three pillars: (1) income from franchisees (WORKMAN charge income) of ¥41,490 million (25.8% of composition), (2) sales from Product Supply to Franchisees of ¥94,849 million (58.9%), and (3) sales from Directly Managed Stores of ¥24,396 million (15.2%). Since royalties are collected at a fixed rate against franchisees' monthly gross profit, improvement in franchisee performance directly translates into headquarters revenue. The expansion of PB (Private Brand) Products also serves to enhance the profitability of product supply sales.

Company Strengths

The company maintains a franchise ratio of 92.0% and has built an FC network of 1,006 stores. Charge income linked to franchisees' gross profit allows the head office to secure stable earnings while limiting inventory risk. The operating profit margin for FY2026 (ending March 2026) remains high at 18.4% (operating profit of ¥29,676 million ÷ total operating revenue of ¥160,852 million).

The share of PB (Private Brand) Products in chain-wide sales across all stores reached 71.9%, up 3.4 percentage points year on year. The company continues to generate hit products such as "Kaiteki Fudangi" (comfortable everyday wear), which applies professional-use technology to casual wear, as well as recovery wear. This unique lineup of high-function, low-price products serves as a differentiating factor that is difficult for competitors to imitate in a short period.

As of the end of FY2026 (ending March 2026), the equity ratio stood at 82.8%, with cash and cash equivalents of ¥36,743 million. The company covers all working capital and capital expenditure needs with its own funds, maintaining a financial structure free of interest-bearing debt. It demonstrates strong cash-generating capability, having funded capital expenditures of ¥9,102 million entirely from its own resources while recording net income of ¥20,618 million for the period.

ENVALITH's Perspective

In FY2026 (ending March 2026), net sales were ¥160,852 million (up 17.5% year on year), operating profit was ¥29,676 million (up 21.7%), and net income was ¥20,618 million (up 22.1%), marking a complete recovery from the profit slump of FY2023–FY2024 and setting a new record high. Existing-store sales grew strongly at +9.0% year on year, and the opening of 48 new stores—including 38 WORKMAN Colors stores and 10 Plus stores—also contributed. As an external factor, expanding demand for fan wear (ファンウエア), driven by the mandatory adoption of heatstroke countermeasures, provided an additional tailwind.

The earnings forecast for FY2027 (ending March 2027) calls for net sales of ¥183,376 million (up 14.0% year on year), operating profit of ¥32,112 million (up 8.2%), and net income of ¥22,329 million (up 8.3%). While the pace of sales growth is expected to be maintained, the rate of operating profit growth is projected to slow from 21.7% in FY2026 (ending March 2026) to 8.2%. This is mainly attributable to increased promotional expenses for smartphone app development and TV commercials, as well as higher selling, general and administrative expenses associated with accelerated store expansion, indicating the company is entering a phase of upfront growth investment. As an external factor, the risk of rising procurement costs due to yen depreciation and higher raw material prices continues to add uncertainty to earnings.

In FY2026 (ending March 2026), merchandise inventories rose to ¥29,770 million (up ¥5,686 million, or +23.6%, year on year), expanding at a pace exceeding sales growth, and the increase in inventories reduced operating cash flow by ¥5,800 million. Operating cash flow came to ¥18,838 million, down ¥5,955 million from ¥24,793 million in the prior period. The buildup in inventories stems from strengthened mass-production capabilities under the "mass-market product policy," and managing demand forecasting accuracy and inventory turnover will be key to sustaining profitability going forward. While the outstanding foreign exchange forward contracts (¥4,652 million recorded under other current assets) are providing a hedging effect, the risk of rising procurement costs if yen depreciation continues remains.

Growth Strategy

Pursuing sustainable high growth through a trinity of customer base expansion, PB (Private Brand) enhancement, and mass-production product policy

Newly opened 38 WORKMAN Colors stores in FY2026 (ending March 2026), expanding to 87 stores by fiscal year-end. Introduced a new "Corporate Franchise System" to strengthen store openings in shopping centers, driving expansion of the customer base to general consumers and families. Sales at Directly Managed Stores achieved high growth of +41.7% year-on-year.

Raised the proportion of PB (Private Brand) Products in chain-wide sales to 71.9% (+3.4pt year-on-year). Pursuing both reduced procurement unit prices and price competitiveness simultaneously by strengthening mass-production systems for core products. Aiming to build overwhelming competitive advantage accompanied by market creation through integrated coordination from product development to logistics, promotion, and sales floors.

Expanding "Comfortable Everyday Wear" by applying functional materials and new features developed for professional use to casual wear. Recovery Wear captured new market needs for fatigue reduction, growing into a representative hit product. Family apparel (+41.1% year-on-year) and casual wear (+35.8% year-on-year) drove high growth.

In addition to conventional SNS marketing, deploying proactive promotions including smartphone app development and TV commercial broadcasts. Aiming to revitalize existing stores by linking marketing activities with sales floors, driving existing store sales growth of +9.0% year-on-year. Plans to continue strengthening these efforts in FY2027 (ending March 2027) as well.
