Business
Japan Post Bank Co., Ltd. is a bank established in 2007 through postal privatization, serving as the banking arm of the Japan Post Group. In addition to its 235 directly operated branches nationwide, it utilizes Japan Post's 19,701 post offices and 3,370 simple post offices as agencies, maintaining a customer base of approximately 120 million people, primarily individuals. Its main businesses consist of three pillars: fund management operations that invest ¥186.1 trillion in deposits into ¥145.3 trillion in securities (¥41.4 trillion in government bonds, ¥88.2 trillion in foreign bonds and other securities); fee-based businesses such as remittances, investment trusts, and credit cards; and lending operations (with a balance of ¥437.21 billion). The company operates under the Banking Business (Single Segment), with 18 consolidated subsidiaries and 1 equity-method affiliate.
Business Model
The bank procures deposits at low cost from individuals through the post office network (average balance ¥189 trillion, funding yield 0.21%), and secures net interest income by diversifying investments across JGBs, foreign bonds, alternative assets, etc. Net interest income for FY2026 (ending March 2026) reaches ¥1,303.7 billion (unconsolidated total, or standalone basis combined). In addition, fee income from investment trust sales, insurance sales, ATM tie-ups, etc. (¥165.7 billion) supplements revenue. Commissions and contributions paid to post offices (totaling ¥560.9 billion) constitute the main cost structure.
Company Strengths
In addition to 235 directly operated branches, the company leverages Japan Post's 19,701 post offices and 3,370 simple post offices as agencies, giving it the largest domestic financial channel network. Its deposit balance of ¥186.1 trillion, of which individual deposits account for over 90%, together with its customer base of approximately 120 million, constitutes a unique competitive advantage that is difficult for competitors to replicate in a short period, and serves as a source of low-cost funding.
The company has built an ALM framework that manages its securities balance of ¥145,406.9 billion (government bonds of ¥41.4 trillion, foreign bonds and other securities of ¥88.2 trillion) by subdividing it into seven portfolios. It has built up its strategic investment area, including private equity, to a balance of ¥15.1 trillion, promoting internationally diversified investment. It achieves large-scale asset management while maintaining sufficient financial soundness, with a capital adequacy ratio (domestic standard) of 14.93%.
In June 2025, following Japan Post Holdings' voting rights ratio falling below 50%, the regulatory framework for new business operations shifted from an approval-based system to a notification-based system. This has accelerated the rollout of new businesses such as foreign currency deposits, general lending, and various banking-related ancillary services compared to before. This represents a company-specific improvement in the regulatory environment resulting from a change in legal status, structurally enhancing the flexibility of business development.
