Business
Nippon Sharyo, Ltd. is a comprehensive infrastructure manufacturing company founded in 1896, with Central Japan Railway Company (JR Tokai) as its parent company. It operates four business segments: Rolling Stock Business (Shinkansen Trains, Commuter/Suburban Trains, etc.), Construction Machinery Business (Large/Small Pile Drivers, All-Casing Tubing Machine, etc.), Transportation Equipment & Steel Structures Business (Tank Trucks, Tank Trailers, Tank Containers, bridges, etc.), and Engineering Business (Mechanical Equipment for Railway Operators, Agricultural Plants (Grain Drying, Processing & Storage Facilities), etc.). Its main customers include railway operators such as JR Tokai, JR West, Tokyo Metropolitan Bureau of Transportation, and Nagoya Railroad, as well as companies in the construction, steel manufacturing, agriculture, and paper-making industries. Of the company's net sales of ¥99,971 million, the Rolling Stock Business accounts for approximately 49%, and the company has secured a mid- to long-term sales base backed by an order backlog of ¥199,387 million.
Business Model
The company mainly handles build-to-order products such as rolling stock, construction machinery, and bridges, generating revenue through design, manufacturing, and delivery tailored to customer specifications. Many projects require a long period from order receipt to delivery, giving the order backlog structural importance in enhancing the visibility of future sales. The company has established a financing framework utilizing the CMS (Cash Management System) of the JR Central Group, its parent company, thereby ensuring financial stability.
Company Strengths
In FY2026 (ending March 2026), orders received in the Rolling Stock Business increased 77.4% year on year to ¥88,383 million, and the order backlog reached ¥142,618 million, up 38.7% year on year, accounting for 71.5% of the company-wide order backlog of ¥199,387 million. Broad vehicle-type capability, backed by a track record including the Shinkansen Trains (N700S, etc.) and Series 315 commuter trains, supports the acquisition of large-scale orders.
The segment profit margin of the Construction Machinery Business stood at 17.9% (net sales of ¥22,040 million, segment profit of ¥3,947 million), the highest among all segments. The company has accumulated many years of manufacturing and development know-how for Large/Small Pile Drivers and the All-Casing Tubing Machine, and maintains stable, high profitability supported by domestic urban redevelopment demand.
Net sales to Central Japan Railway Company (JR Central) reached ¥30,160 million (30.2% of company-wide net sales), maintaining a stable business relationship. Since the capital and business alliance in 2008, business continuity has also been secured through participation in the parent company group's CMS to ensure flexible fundraising, as well as through lease agreements for factory assets.
ENVALITH's Perspective
Performance Trend
Net sales bottomed out at ¥88,058 million in FY2024 (ended March 2024) and increased for two consecutive fiscal years, reaching ¥99,971 million in FY2026 (ending March 2026), up 3.8% year on year. On the profit side, operating profit rose 67.5% from ¥6,935 million (FY2025) to ¥11,615 million (FY2026), and the operating profit margin improved significantly from 7.2% to 11.6%. This was mainly driven by a combination of a decrease in cost of sales (from ¥81,648 million to ¥80,392 million) and an increase in net sales, which expanded gross profit from ¥14,691 million to ¥19,579 million. Increased profits in the Rolling Stock Business, Transportation Equipment & Steel Structures Business, and Engineering Business also contributed. Return on equity rose from 10.1% to 15.9%, making the improvement in profitability clear. For FY2027 (ending March 2027), the company has disclosed a conservative forecast of operating profit of ¥8,800 million (down 24.2% year on year), reflecting uncertainty over the situation in the Middle East.
Growth Strategy
Under "Nissha Transformation 2030," the company is advancing three pillars: strengthening profitability, reforming its business foundation, and transforming its business model.
In addition to N700S and Series 315 trains for JR Central, the company has been accumulating orders for rolling stock from public and private railway operators, securing an order backlog of ¥142,618 million (up 38.7% year on year). Segment profit improved substantially to ¥4,589 million (versus ¥2,734 million in the previous fiscal year), reflecting progress in strengthening the earnings power of the core business.
Driven mainly by increased sales of Mechanical Equipment for Railway Operators (up 13.8% year on year to ¥7,452 million), segment profit turned positive, improving from a loss of ¥831 million in the previous fiscal year to a profit of ¥1,105 million. Orders received increased to ¥7,836 million (versus ¥6,622 million in the previous fiscal year), strengthening the sales base for subsequent periods as well.
The company continued to repay long-term borrowings, improving the equity ratio to 53.9% (from 49.3% in the previous fiscal year). The annual dividend for FY2026 (ending March 2026) was set at ¥45 (an increase of ¥10 from ¥35 in the previous fiscal year), with ¥50 planned for FY2027 (ending March 2027). Reflecting strong business performance, the year-end dividend was also increased by ¥5 versus the forecast, reinforcing the company's commitment to shareholder returns.
