Business

Taiyo Yuden Co., Ltd. is an electronic components specialty manufacturer founded in 1950, engaged in the manufacture and sale of Capacitors (MLCC, etc.), Inductors (Wire-wound, Multilayer Inductors, etc.), Composite Devices (FBAR/SAW, Circuit Modules, etc.), and other products. The group, comprising 29 subsidiaries and 1 affiliated company, has built a global structure with manufacturing bases in Japan and overseas (the Philippines, Malaysia, China, South Korea, etc.) and sales bases (Taiwan, the United States, Europe, various Asian countries, and India). Major customers are domestic and overseas set manufacturers such as automobile manufacturers, information infrastructure-related companies, and industrial equipment manufacturers, and the company is pursuing a strategy to capture growing demand for high value-added components for AI servers and electric vehicles. Consolidated net sales for FY2026 (ending March 2026) were ¥355,341 million.

Business Model

The company adopts a vertically integrated model starting from in-house development of materials and materials technology, whereby manufacturing subsidiaries process raw materials and semi-finished products into finished goods, which are then supplied to domestic and overseas sales companies and set makers. R&D expenses of ¥14,474 million (FY2026 (ending March 2026)) are invested to accumulate proprietary technologies such as dielectric materials, thin-layer high-capacitance techniques, and ultra-miniaturization production technology. The earnings structure is designed to expand profitability by raising the sales mix of high-value-added products and by continuously increasing production capacity through capital investment.

Company Strengths

The company has internally advanced its dielectric materials technology, thin-layer high-capacitance technology, and ultra-compact product manufacturing technology cultivated since its founding, and continues to develop cutting-edge MLCC products. R&D expenses amounted to ¥14,474 million (FY2026, ending March 2026). An integrated technology development framework spanning from materials to finished products makes short-term imitation by competitors difficult.

The company has built a multi-site framework with manufacturing bases in the Philippines, Malaysia, China, South Korea, and elsewhere, and sales bases in Taiwan, the United States, Europe, India, and elsewhere. Sales to Taiwan have expanded to ¥40,690 million (exceeding 10% of consolidated net sales), demonstrating an effective sales network that steadily captures Asian demand. In January 2025, the company newly established a sales subsidiary in India, advancing its expansion into emerging markets as well.

Capital expenditure for FY2026 (ending March 2026) totaled ¥41,063 million, allocated mainly to expanding production capacity for MLCCs used in automotive and information infrastructure applications such as AI servers. Under the Medium-Term Management Plan 2030, the company plans capital investment of approximately ¥270,000 million over five years, underpinning its ongoing investment track record and capacity to respond to expanding demand.

ENVALITH's Perspective

Operating profit for FY2026 (ending March 2026) reached ¥19,996 million, up 91.2% year-on-year, but this still represents only about 29% of the peak level of ¥68,218 million recorded in FY2022 (ended March 2022). The operating margin remained at just 5.6%, showing a substantial gap versus the 15% target set out in the Mid-Term Management Plan 2030. While a directional recovery in earnings is confirmed, achieving the target is likely to require considerable time.

Revenue from Composite Devices (FBAR/SAW, Circuit Modules, etc.), which includes communication device components, fell 35.6% year-on-year to ¥14,796 million, and the segment also recorded an impairment loss of ¥2,130 million and business restructuring costs of ¥1,455 million associated with a factory closure. The segment's share of sales composition declined from 6.7% to 4.2%, indicating an ongoing contraction of the business. At the same time, the growing concentration on Capacitors (MLCC, etc.) and Inductors (Wire-wound, Multilayer Inductors, etc.) entails the risk of oversimplifying the product portfolio.

Ordinary profit for FY2026 (ending March 2026) rose 129.4% year-on-year to ¥24,129 million, significantly boosted by foreign exchange gains of ¥4,759 million recorded as non-operating income. Given that the prior period recorded a foreign exchange loss of ¥819 million, the reversal effect means the underlying improvement in profitability is smaller than the headline figures suggest. The average exchange rate during the period was ¥149.99 to the US dollar (versus ¥152.61 in the prior period), representing a slight yen appreciation, and it should be noted that foreign exchange trends will continue to be a major external factor driving earnings volatility.

Growth Strategy

Targeting the achievement of Medium-Term Management Plan 2030 goals through focus on automotive and information infrastructure markets and establishing inductors as a second pillar

The company has designated automotive electrification/electronic advancement and information infrastructure applications such as AI servers as priority markets, aiming to increase the sales composition ratio through expansion of high-value-added, high-reliability products. In FY2026 (ending March 2026), sales of Capacitors (MLCC, etc.) expanded steadily, up 8.5% year on year, confirming the direction of this strategy.

The company is capturing demand from consumer and information equipment applications, centered on Inductors (Wire-wound, Multilayer Inductors, etc.), with sales of Inductors (Wire-wound, Multilayer Inductors, etc.) steadily expanding to ¥64,319 million (up 4.5% year on year). The sales composition ratio remains stable at 18.1%, and efforts to reduce dependence on Capacitors (MLCC, etc.) continue.

The company is implementing continuous capacity expansion to meet growing demand. Capital expenditure for fixed asset acquisition in FY2026 (ending March 2026) was ¥41,063 million (reduced from ¥62,715 million in the previous fiscal year). Backed by operating cash flow of ¥58,117 million and a cash balance of ¥98,073 million, sufficient investment capacity for the future has been secured.

The company has set targets for FY2031 (ending March 2031) of net sales of ¥480,000 million, operating margin of 15%, ROE of 15%, and ROIC of 10%. In FY2026 (ending March 2026), the operating margin of 5.6% and ROE of 4.5% show a significant gap versus these targets, requiring fundamental improvement in profitability to achieve them. The operating margin forecast for FY2027 (ending March 2027) is approximately 7.8%, showing a trend of improvement.
