JEOL Ltd. (JEOL) is a precision instrument manufacturer founded in 1949, which has operated three segments: Scientific & Metrology Instruments, centered on electron microscopes, analytical instruments, and measurement/inspection equipment; Industrial Equipment, including electron beam lithography systems for semiconductor manufacturing; and Medical Equipment, which was transferred to Sysmex in April 2026. Its major customers include universities, research institutions, semiconductor manufacturers, and pharmaceutical companies, and it provides sales and services globally through 33 subsidiaries worldwide, including in the United States, Europe, and Asia. Business Model

Leveraging proprietary electron optics and analytical technologies at its core, the company manufactures high-value-added products such as transmission electron microscopes and electron beam lithography systems, selling them directly to research institutions, semiconductor manufacturers, and other customers worldwide through its sales subsidiaries. In addition to product sales, revenue is also generated from maintenance, services, and the purchase and resale of peripheral equipment. Industrial Equipment boasts an outstanding operating margin of 40.2%, driving profitability for the group as a whole.

Company Strengths

Industrial Equipment achieved net sales of ¥48,131 million, segment profit of ¥19,363 million, and a profit margin of 40.2% in FY2026 (ending March 2026). Orders and sales of Spot-Beam Electron Beam Lithography Systems and Single-Beam Mask Writers have progressed steadily, forming a high entry barrier through niche technologies indispensable for the sophistication of semiconductor manufacturing processes.

The company has 33 consolidated subsidiaries in the US, Europe, Asia, and elsewhere, and has built up a track record in the electron microscope field for over 70 years since its founding in 1949. Order backlog for Scientific & Metrology Instruments remained solid at ¥53,058 million (105.7% year on year), with stable demand continuing from universities, research institutions, and semiconductor manufacturers.

Total R&D expenses in FY2026 (ending March 2026) amounted to ¥11,405 million, of which ¥7,632 million was allocated to Scientific & Metrology Instruments and ¥2,387 million to Industrial Equipment. Total capital expenditure reached ¥20,182 million, with ¥15,493 million invested in Scientific & Metrology Instruments alone. The consolidation of Japan Superconductor Technology Inc. as a subsidiary also strengthened the technological foundation related to NMR.

ENVALITH's Perspective

In FY2026 (ending March 2026), revenue was ¥179,353 million (down 8.8% year on year) and operating profit was ¥26,017 million (down 26.7% year on year), marking the first decline in both revenue and operating profit in two periods. External factors compounding this included cuts to the US government's science and technology-related budget, a slowdown in Chinese economic growth, and a delay in the ramp-up of demand for Multi-Beam Mask Writers. Meanwhile, the operating profit forecast for FY2027 (ending March 2027) is ¥26,500 million (up 1.9% year on year), only a slight increase, suggesting that a full-fledged recovery will take time. It will be necessary to continue examining whether the primary cause of the revenue decline is the external environment or a decline in the company's own competitiveness.

In FY2026 (ending March 2026), profit attributable to owners of parent was ¥22,097 million (up 18.2% year on year), securing an increase in profit, but this was primarily due to the rebound effect from a large extraordinary loss of ¥12,381 million on valuation of investment securities recorded in the previous period. The extraordinary loss for the current period was minor at ¥239 million, and pre-tax income increased to ¥29,488 million (versus ¥24,962 million in the previous period). Rather than taking the increase in net income at face value, the recovery of underlying performance on an operating profit basis will be an important point to watch from FY2027 (ending March 2027) onward.

In FY2026 (ending March 2026), expenditure on acquisition of tangible fixed assets rapidly expanded to ¥13,489 million (versus ¥2,960 million in the previous period), while the company also carried out share buybacks of ¥12,770 million and increased short-term borrowings by ¥14,000 million. Operating cash flow decreased to ¥16,000 million (versus ¥23,104 million in the previous period), putting the balance among investment, shareholder returns, and financing under scrutiny. The equity ratio remains high at 59.9% (versus 61.4% in the previous period), but going forward, the focus of evaluation will be on assessing the payback period for capital expenditure and the timing of its contribution to earnings.

Growth Strategy

Under "Evolving Growth 2.0," the company is concentrating investment in semiconductor and life science fields, targeting an operating margin of 20% and ROE of 15% or higher in FY2029 (ending March 2029)

As a 5-year plan covering FY2025-FY2029 (ending March 2030), the company is strengthening strategic investment in the semiconductor and life science fields. In FY2026 (ending March 2026), the increase in tangible and intangible fixed assets expanded significantly to ¥20,182 million (vs. ¥7,030 million in the previous period), and construction in progress also surged to ¥12,784 million (vs. ¥1,183 million in the previous period). Expansion of production and development capacity is underway.

The low-profitability Medical Equipment business (operating margin of 0.4%) was transferred to Sysmex effective April 1, 2026. This is a structural reform to concentrate management resources on the two businesses of Scientific & Metrology Instruments and Industrial Equipment, aiming to improve the profitability of the business portfolio. The transfer price is still being calculated, and the gain or loss on transfer has not yet been finalized.

Against the backdrop of higher performance and diversification of DFB lasers used in optical transceivers for AI data centers, demand is expected to increase for manufacturing processes including mass-production ramp-up. Orders and sales have trended steadily along with the Single-Beam Mask Writer, positioning this as a core growth driver for the Industrial Equipment segment.

With a basic policy of a target dividend payout ratio of 30%, the annual dividend for FY2026 (ending March 2026) was ¥132 (vs. ¥106 in the previous period), for a payout ratio of 30.5%. In addition, the company conducted share buybacks totaling ¥12,770 million. For FY2027 (ending March 2027), an annual dividend of ¥132 (payout ratio of 30.5%) is also forecast, reflecting a policy of pursuing improved capital efficiency alongside enhanced shareholder returns.
