Business

Nippon Avionics Co., Ltd. is an electronic equipment manufacturer established in 1960 as a joint venture between NEC and Hughes Aircraft Company of the United States, and is currently a subsidiary of NAJ Holdings Co., Ltd. (holding 52.61% of voting rights). The business consists of two segments: "Information Systems" and "Electronic Equipment." The Information Systems segment handles Defense Systems Products, Space Electronic Components, and Industrial Electronic Equipment, and is the core business accounting for approximately 82% of net sales. The Electronic Equipment segment offers Bonding Equipment centered on four joining methods—resistance welding, pulse heat, ultrasonic, and laser—as well as Infrared Equipment utilizing infrared technology. Major customers are NEC (34.5% of net sales), Sumisho Aero Systems (16.8%), and Fujitsu (15.7%), reflecting a business structure heavily dependent on government demand, centered on equipment for the Ministry of Defense. The company conducts manufacturing and sales in cooperation with its subsidiary, Fukushima Avionics.

Business Model

The company operates on a made-to-order production basis, providing highly environment-resistant and reliable products and solutions built on core electronics, systems, infrared, and micro-bonding technologies. In Information Systems, the company builds up a long-term order backlog (¥29,657 million) underpinned by the defense budget, recognizing revenue steadily based on percentage-of-completion accounting. Electronic Equipment leverages its technological advantage in four bonding methods and infrared sensing to expand sales into domestic and overseas industrial markets, generating revenue accordingly. The company invested ¥456 million in R&D expenses to continue strengthening its technological capabilities.

Company Strengths

The order backlog for Information Systems at the end of FY2026 (ending March 2026) reached ¥29,657 million (up 46.5% year on year), exceeding the segment's sales of ¥23,858 million for the same period. This order backlog forms the basis for production planning, creating a structure that secures a considerable portion of sales for the following period and beyond in advance. It enhances visibility toward achieving the projected sales of ¥32,000 million for FY2027 (ending March 2026).

In Bonding Equipment, the company possesses four proprietary bonding methods—resistance welding, pulse heat, ultrasonic, and laser—enabling it to address customers' diverse bonding needs. In Infrared Equipment (Thermography / Monitoring Systems), the company develops solutions for markets such as industrial safety and waste monitoring, centered on heat visualization, wavelength control, and image processing technologies. In April 2026, the division was renamed the Infrared Sensing Division, accelerating entry into new business domains.

The Electronic Equipment segment recorded segment profit of ¥419 million in FY2026 (ending March 2026), achieving a turnaround to profitability with an improvement of ¥669 million year on year. Overseas sales expanded to ¥2,371 million (up 24.5% year on year), advancing the diversification of the revenue base away from dependence on domestic demand. Sales expansion activities targeting key markets proved effective, with orders received reaching ¥5,286 million (up 20.0% year on year).

ENVALITH's Perspective

In FY2026 (ending March 2026), the Information Systems segment posted sales of ¥23,858 million, accounting for 81.7% of consolidated net sales, indicating a high degree of dependence on defense-related business. As an external factor, the sustained high level of the defense budget is strongly driving performance, but should there be any change in policy, budget cuts, or shifts in procurement policy, the impact on performance would be significant. While the order backlog of ¥29,657 million provides a certain buffer function, awareness of concentration risk remains necessary.

The Electronic Equipment segment achieved a turnaround to profitability in FY2026 (ending March 2026), posting segment profit of ¥419 million (versus a loss of ¥250 million in the prior period). However, the segment profit margin remained at only 7.9%, still low compared to 21.4% for Information Systems. The acceleration of new market entry triggered by the renaming to the Infrared Sensing Business Division, along with scale expansion through strengthened overseas development (overseas sales of ¥2,371 million, up 24.5% year on year), will be key to sustained improvement in profit margin.

In FY2026 (ending March 2026), cash flow from operating activities swung sharply negative to ¥(3,621) million (versus ¥2,150 million in the prior period). The main cause was an increase in trade receivables and contract assets of ¥(8,230) million, reflecting a notable expansion in working capital accompanying order growth. To offset this, short-term borrowings surged to ¥9,510 million (versus ¥2,830 million in the prior period), bringing the outstanding borrowings balance to ¥10,490 million. The equity ratio declined to 44.6% (versus 51.9% in the prior period), putting the effectiveness of cash flow management under scrutiny at this stage.

Growth Strategy

Aiming for net sales of ¥32,000 million in FY2027 (ending March 2027) through steady revenue recognition of the defense-related order backlog and development of new markets for Electronic Equipment

Steadily executing production plans based on the fiscal year-end order backlog of ¥29,657 million. While maintaining existing business through continued QCD improvement and strengthened manufacturing capabilities, the company aims to expand its business domain through R&D promotion and proactive proposal activities. Positioned as the key driver for expanding Information Systems sales in FY2027 (ending March 2027).

Renamed to the Infrared Sensing Division in April 2026, strengthening the provision of monitoring market solutions such as waste monitoring and maintenance/inspection efficiency improvement. Expanding orders and sales through proactive entry into new business domains. Continuing to strengthen overseas expansion based on the track record of overseas sales of ¥2,371 million (up 24.5% year on year).

Promoting expanded sales of crystal device sealing equipment against the backdrop of a recovery in equipment demand. Aiming to improve profitability in the Electronic Equipment segment by providing high customer value solutions leveraging the four bonding methods—resistance welding, pulse heat, ultrasonic, and laser—and by strengthening overseas expansion.

In response to the shift of operating cash flow into negative territory (¥-3,621 million) and the sharp increase in outstanding borrowings to ¥10,490 million, cash-flow-oriented management has been positioned as a priority measure for strengthening the management base. The company aims to restore its equity ratio through efficient management of trade receivables and inventories and through revenue expansion.
