Business

Pulstec Industrial Co., Ltd. is a precision electronics manufacturer based in Hamamatsu City, Shizuoka Prefecture, with strength in product development that combines electronic technology, precision mechanical technology, software, and optical wave sensing technology. The business consists of three segments: X-ray Residual Stress Measurement Equipment, Healthcare Equipment, and Optical Application & Specialty Equipment. Major customers are manufacturers related to transportation equipment, medical devices, and semiconductor manufacturing equipment. In addition to sales of its own products, the company positions contract development and contract manufacturing for key customers as the other pillar of its business. It also expands overseas into North America, Europe, and Asia through its US subsidiary, Pulstec USA, Inc.

Business Model

The company combines a product business that sells its self-developed Portable X-ray Residual Stress Measurement System (μ-X360J, etc.) domestically and overseas with a contract development and contract manufacturing business based on specifications from key customers (such as Hitachi High-Tech Corporation). It also secures recurring revenue through demo unit rentals, measurement services, and maintenance, aiming for a structure capable of withstanding economic fluctuations through multiple revenue sources.

Company Strengths

The X-ray Residual Stress Measurement Equipment segment, centered on the Portable X-ray Residual Stress Measurement System (μ-X360J), achieved segment profit of ¥347 million against net sales of ¥893 million in FY2026 (ending March 2026), boasting an extremely high profit margin of 38.9%. Awareness-building activities through domestic and overseas exhibitions, webinars, and showroom demonstrations have led to continued active inquiries from new customers.

In the Optical Application & Specialty Equipment segment, sales to the major customer Hitachi High-Tech Corporation expanded to ¥618 million in FY2026 (ending March 2026), up 29.4% year on year, accounting for 24.2% of total sales. Against the backdrop of increased production capacity following the complete cleanroom renovation completed in FY2025 (ended March 2025), strong inquiries have continued, and the order backlog remained at ¥512 million.

The equity ratio as of the end of FY2026 (ending March 2026) stood at a high level of 79.9%, with zero interest-bearing debt. Cash and deposits increased by ¥207 million during the period, and operating cash flow amounted to ¥582 million. The interest coverage ratio reached 36,298 times, indicating extremely high financial soundness. The company maintains a self-funded management structure capable of covering capital expenditures, new product development, and personnel recruitment through retained earnings.

ENVALITH's Perspective

In FY2026 (ending March 2026), Healthcare Equipment fell into a segment loss of ¥18 million (versus a profit of ¥40 million in the previous period) due to the partial discontinuation of contract development projects and delays in the start of new projects. On the other hand, the order backlog has built up to a high level of ¥1,198 million (116.1% year-on-year), and order intake also recovered sharply, up 149.6% year-on-year. The timing of revenue recognition from the order backlog will be key to performance in FY2027 (ending March 2027), but the risk of project discontinuation or delay warrants continued monitoring.

Sales dependence on Hitachi High-Tech Corporation rose from 19.2% in FY2025 (ended March 2025) to 24.2% in FY2026 (ending March 2026). Of the ¥1,033 million in sales in the Optical Application & Specialty Equipment segment, the company accounts for roughly 60%, calculated on that basis, and the risk that changes in the company's capital expenditure policy or fluctuations in order volume will directly affect performance is increasing. Fluctuations in supply and demand in the semiconductor manufacturing equipment market, as an external factor, could also amplify this risk.

In FY2026 (ending March 2026), net income attributable to owners of the parent fell sharply to ¥285 million (down 19.7% year-on-year), while operating profit of ¥357 million (up 6.2% year-on-year) and ordinary profit of ¥396 million (up 12.0% year-on-year) both increased. The main cause of the decline in net income was an increase in the tax burden, as income tax adjustment shrank from a benefit of ¥102 million (a tax-effect benefit) in the previous period to a benefit of only ¥12 million. Underlying earning power of the business has improved, and the forecast recovery in net income to ¥300 million (up 5.0% year-on-year) in FY2027 (ending March 2027) is judged to be a reasonable level.

Growth Strategy

Growth driven by two pillars: overseas expansion and new product development for X-ray equipment, and expansion of contract business for semiconductor applications

Promoting expansion into overseas markets including North America, Europe, and Asia through strengthened collaboration with the US subsidiary Pulstec USA, Inc. and overseas distributors. In FY2026 (ending March 2026), North American sales reached ¥76 million (up from ¥49 million in the previous period) and European sales reached ¥37 million (up from ¥20 million in the previous period), showing an expanding trend in overseas sales. The company continues demo unit loans, contract measurement services, and trade show participation to secure early orders.

Promoting the recognition of sales from the order backlog of ¥1,198 million (116.1% of the previous period) as of the end of FY2026 (ending March 2026), while improving productivity through strengthened quality control systems and enhanced technical capabilities. The company manages risks of cancellation or delay in contract development while pursuing sales activities to secure early orders for new contract development projects. The sales forecast for the cumulative second quarter of FY2027 (ending March 2027) is ¥1,000 million (down 3.9% year on year), reflecting a cautious outlook for the first half.

Continuing to deepen business relationships with the major customer Hitachi High-Tech while focusing on developing new customers centered on optical wave sensing technology and securing early orders for highly profitable custom and repeat products. The full-scale contribution of increased production capacity from the comprehensive clean room renovation completed in FY2025 (ended March 2025) drove a substantial increase in profit, with FY2026 (ending March 2026) segment profit reaching ¥329 million (up 27.1% year on year).

Allocating management resources toward the early creation of new businesses that leverage the company's distinctive strengths, while actively pursuing the recruitment and development of talent to lead the next generation. Capital expenditures for the expansion, renewal, and repair of existing facilities are implemented in a timely and appropriate manner. In FY2026 (ending March 2026), expenditure for the acquisition of property, plant and equipment was ¥244 million, down from ¥304 million in the previous period, but the capital investment policy remains unchanged.
