Business
Sony Group operates under the Purpose of "filling the world with emotion, through the power of creativity and technology," with core operations spanning five segments: Game & Network Services (G&NS), Music, Pictures, Entertainment, Technology & Services (ET&S), and Imaging & Sensing Solutions (I&SS). The company holds global brands such as PlayStation, Sony Music, and Sony Pictures, covering a wide range of areas from consumer entertainment to semiconductor sensors. In October 2025, the company completed a partial spin-off of its financial services business (SFGI), advancing its transformation toward a business structure focused on entertainment and technology. With 1,453 consolidated subsidiaries and 132 equity-method affiliates, sales revenue on a continuing operations basis reached ¥12,479.6 billion (FY2025).
Business Model
Sony's core approach is a "platform × content" model that builds up high-margin revenue from digital software, subscriptions, advertising, and other sources, starting from hardware sales. In G&NS, the company leverages its PS5 installed base to generate recurring revenue through PS Plus and First-Party Game Software (PlayStation Studios), while in Music and Pictures, ongoing investment in IP catalogs stabilizes streaming and licensing income. In I&SS, Sony leverages its technological edge in image sensors to supply high-value-added products for mobile and automotive applications. A distinguishing feature of the earnings structure is the group-wide synergy in which each segment mutually leverages IP and platforms.
Company Strengths
In FY2025, the G&NS segment posted operating income of ¥463,258 million, a new record high. Digital Software & Add-on Content grew to ¥2,415,305 million (+¥124,807 million year on year), and Network Services, centered on PS Plus, expanded to ¥763,126 million (+¥93,253 million year on year), reflecting a continued shift from hardware dependence toward high-margin software and service revenue.
In FY2025, the I&SS segment recorded net sales of ¥2,151,533 million and operating income of ¥357,318 million, both record highs. The company has accumulated deep analog technology expertise spanning pixel structure, stacking technology, circuitry, and processes, giving it a competitive advantage that is difficult to replicate. Responding to the trend toward larger sensor formats for mobile devices and improving product mix have contributed to higher profitability.
In FY2025, the Music segment posted net sales of ¥2,120,110 million and operating income of ¥446,986 million, both record highs. The company continued its ongoing IP investment, including the acquisition of the Pink Floyd and Queen catalogs and an additional equity stake in Peanuts Holdings (raising its ownership to 80%). A multi-layered revenue structure comprising streaming revenue (¥852,672 million), Music Publishing (¥419,864 million), and Media Networks & Platforms (¥325,342 million) underpins stable growth.
ENVALITH's Perspective
Performance Trend
In FY2025 (ending March 2026), sales revenue from continuing operations was ¥12,479,620 million (+3.7% year on year), and operating income was ¥1,447,507 million (+13.4% year on year), representing increased revenue and increased profit. The operating margin improved to 11.6% (from 10.6% in the previous fiscal year). On the other hand, due to the recognition of a cumulative OCI reclassification loss of ¥1,377,795 million associated with the SFGI spin-off, consolidated net loss was ¥(302,492) million (net income from continuing operations was ¥1,055,266 million). Looking at the financial trend over the past five fiscal years, sales revenue expanded from ¥9,921,513 million in FY2022 onward to ¥12,479,620 million. Operating income remained roughly flat at around ¥1,200,000 million from FY2022 through FY2024, before improving at an accelerating pace to ¥1,276,635 million in FY2025 and ¥1,447,507 million in FY2026. As an external factor, the weaker yen boosted the yen-equivalent sales revenue of I&SS and G&NS, which have a high proportion of US dollar-denominated revenue. For FY2027 (ending March 2027), operating income is forecast at ¥1,600,000 million.
Growth Strategy
Under the "Creative Entertainment Vision," the company aims to maximize group synergies through the trinity of IP, engagement, and technology
Building on the PS5 installed base, the company is expanding high-margin recurring revenue from Digital Software & Add-on Content (¥2,415,305 million in FY2025) and PS Plus network services (¥763,126 million). It is pursuing a synergy strategy that expands reach by deploying its own IP across multiple platforms including PC, and leverages PSN as a shared engagement platform across the group.
While maintaining the technological advantage of stacked CMOS sensors, the company is strengthening differentiation of high-value-added products through the introduction of next-generation manufacturing processes (TRISTA, etc.). In addition to mobile applications, it is expanding its value share of Image Sensors for Automotive and capturing demand for Semiconductor Lasers for data centers. FY2025 operating profit rose sharply to ¥357,318 million.
In addition to continued growth in Recorded Music (Streaming) (¥852,672 million) and Visual Media & Platforms (¥325,342 million), the company is strengthening the global expansion of anime IP centered on Crunchyroll and cross-IP collaboration across games, music, and pictures. It also continues to expand its IP portfolio through actions such as the additional acquisition of an equity interest in Peanuts Holdings LLC. FY2025 Music segment operating profit reached a record high of ¥446,986 million.
Through the partial spin-off of SFGI (executed October 1, 2025), the company deconsolidated its financial services business and concentrated management resources on the entertainment technology business. In FY2025, it conducted share repurchases of ¥522,089 million. As a subsequent event, on May 8, 2026, it established a new share repurchase program with an upper limit of 230 million shares and ¥500.0 billion, and also decided to cancel 184,494,319 shares. The annual dividend was increased to ¥25.00 (from ¥20.00 in the previous fiscal year), with ¥35.00 forecast for FY2027 (ending March 2027).
The ET&S segment recorded FY2025 sales of ¥2,260,532 million, a decrease of ¥148,743 million year on year, primarily due to weakness in the Display business (down ¥121,472 million). The company aims to restore profitability through strengthening creator-oriented solutions in the imaging business, centered on the Alpha Series, along with operational improvements from supply chain optimization and fixed cost reductions. FY2025 operating profit declined to ¥158,584 million, down ¥32,342 million year on year.
