Business

JVCKENWOOD is an electronics manufacturer formed through the business integration of Victor and Kenwood (2008), consisting of the Company together with 61 consolidated subsidiaries and 5 affiliated companies. Its business is divided into three segments: Mobility & Telematics Services, Safety & Security, and Entertainment Solutions. The company offers a wide range of products, from in-vehicle AV equipment, car navigation systems, and drive recorders to professional digital radio equipment and surveillance cameras, as well as projectors, headphones, and music content, supplying products to global markets including North America, Europe, and Asia. Its major customers span a diverse range, including automakers (OEM), North American public safety agencies, and general consumers.

Business Model

The company adopts a vertically integrated model, manufacturing at domestic and overseas production sites (Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Italy, etc.) and supplying markets through sales subsidiaries in each country. Mobility accounts for approximately 55% of revenue, forming a stable earnings base, while Safety & Security (business profit margin of 13.5%) drives overall company profit. The company aims to improve profitability through price revisions, fixed cost reductions, and business portfolio optimization.

Company Strengths

Safety & Security achieved revenue of ¥94,695 million and a business profit margin of 13.5% in FY2026 (ending March 2026). With EF Johnson Technologies (P25-compatible) and Radio Activity S.r.l. (DMR-compatible) under its umbrella, the company offers a product lineup supporting multiple digital standards including NXDN, DMR, and P25. Its brand strength, sales network, and technical standards compliance capability in the North American public safety market constitute a unique advantage that competitors cannot easily replicate in a short period.

In Mobility, in-vehicle speakers, amplifiers, and other products for European OEM customers by ASK Industries S.p.A. (Italy) performed steadily, while the domestic accessories business also remained strong. The decline in revenue at JKHL due to the slowdown in the Chinese economy was offset by other locations, and despite an overall decline in revenue for the segment, business profit increased 10.6% year on year to ¥5,399 million. The diversification across regions, customers, and products reduces the risk of dependence on a single market.

Total R&D expenses for FY2026 (ending March 2026) amounted to ¥18.5 billion (Mobility ¥10.7 billion, Safety ¥6.0 billion, Entertainment ¥1.8 billion). The company commercialized proprietary technologies such as an in-vehicle navigation system with a Mini LED backlight (an industry first), an FAA Level D-certified projector, and a sensor fusion camera. It is also advancing joint research with Kyoto University, Saga University, and Nagoya University, aiming for continuous accumulation of intellectual property.

ENVALITH's Perspective

In FY2026 (ending March 2026), Safety & Security saw a sharp decline in business profit of ¥5,842 million (-31.4% year on year), due to a combination of parts supply shortages and delays in budget execution caused by the U.S. government shutdown. The FY2027 (ending March 2027) forecast anticipates recovery in this segment, projecting companywide business profit of ¥23,400 million (up 12.1% year on year); however, the trend in U.S. government budget execution (an external factor) is the largest variable in achieving the plan, and the company itself expects that delay effects will remain, mainly in the first half, which warrants close attention.

In FY2026 (ending March 2026), the Aftermarket Business in Mobility & Telematics Services and the Media Business in Entertainment Solutions saw revenue declines due to the impact of U.S. tariff measures. Meanwhile, the exchange rates used for profit and loss were approximately ¥151 per U.S. dollar and approximately ¥175 per euro, compared to the previous fiscal year (approximately ¥153 per U.S. dollar and approximately ¥164 per euro), reflecting a stronger euro; as a result, other components of equity (foreign currency translation adjustments) increased by ¥10,175 million, boosting comprehensive income. The FY2027 (ending March 2027) forecast assumes ¥155 per U.S. dollar and ¥180 per euro, with the earnings outlook premised on both a reduction in tariff impact and the continuation of yen depreciation effects.

In FY2026 (ending March 2026), profit attributable to owners of the parent fell 17.2% year on year to ¥16,787 million, marking the second consecutive year of declining profit. Notably, corporate income tax expense nearly doubled, from ¥2,466 million in the previous fiscal year to ¥4,694 million, causing a significant rise in the effective tax rate. The FY2027 (ending March 2027) forecast anticipates a further decline in net income to ¥15,000 million (down 10.6% year on year), indicating a structure in which recovery in revenue and business profit does not directly translate into improved net income—an issue investors should keep in mind.

Growth Strategy

Advancing evolution into a customer value creation company under "VISION2030" and strengthening shareholder returns with a total payout ratio of 30-45%

While working to recover from the impact of component supply shortages, the company aims to capture demand for the transition from analog to digital in the North American public safety market, as well as demand related to crisis management response. For FY2027 (ending March 2026), the company anticipates the impact of delayed U.S. government budget execution in the first half but expects a recovery for the full year.

"VISION2030" was announced on May 1, 2026. Aiming to evolve from a manufacturing and sales business into a customer value creation company, the company will promote business expansion, portfolio optimization, and improved capital efficiency across three segments. The guideline for the total payout ratio has been raised from the previous 30-40% to 30-45%, with a basic policy of stable dividends and continuous dividend increases.

In FY2026 (ending March 2026), the company implemented an annual dividend of ¥18 (an increase from ¥15 in the previous period) and repurchased a total of approximately 5.94 million shares of treasury stock (total acquisition amount of approximately ¥8.0 billion). The total payout ratio for the period was approximately 33%. For FY2027 (ending March 2026), the company forecasts an annual dividend of ¥20 and plans to continue agile share buybacks within the 30-45% total payout ratio range.

Content sales in the Entertainment Business trended favorably, achieving a significant increase in revenue of approximately ¥3.2 billion year-on-year in FY2026 (ending March 2026). The Media Business is expected to recover in FY2027 (ending March 2026) due to a reduction in the impact of U.S. tariff measures. The company aims to improve its revenue structure through the expansion of digital businesses such as content distribution.
