Business

KIKUKAWAENTERPRISE, INC. is a specialized manufacturer of Woodworking Machinery and Machine Tools founded in 1897. The company offers a wide product lineup ranging from sawmilling machinery that processes logs into square timber and boards, to secondary-processing woodworking machinery, and Machine Tools that process iron, non-ferrous metals, and new materials. Its main customers are sawmill and timber processing companies (Woodworking Machinery) and processors serving the aircraft, railway rolling stock, and automotive industries (Machine Tools). The company has its head office plant in Ise City, Mie Prefecture, and operates sales offices in Osaka, Tokyo, Nagoya, and Kyushu. It is listed on the Standard Market of the Tokyo Stock Exchange and the Main Market of the Nagoya Stock Exchange.

Business Model

The company operates on a build-to-order basis, securing orders through proposal-based sales activities via customer visits and exhibitions. Manufacturing is carried out at the head office plant in Ise City, Mie Prefecture, and the company maintains a debt-free management policy, funding working capital and capital expenditures entirely with its own funds. Under a technical assistance agreement with Timesavers, Inc. of the United States (effective through the end of December 2030), the company holds exclusive manufacturing and sales rights for grinding machines, which complements its product competitiveness. After-sales service is also positioned as one of its revenue sources.

Company Strengths

Since its founding in 1897, the company has accumulated fundamental processing technologies of cutting, shaving, and polishing over 127 years. It developed Japan's first automatic four-side planer in 1929. In December 2022, it newly constructed a research building in Ise City, Mie Prefecture, strengthening its structure for developing new technologies. In the current fiscal year, the company invested ¥58,100 thousand in research and development expenses, continuing element technology development in both the woodworking and machine tool fields.

The equity ratio at the end of FY2026 (ending March 2026) was 87.2%. Working capital and capital expenditure funds are covered entirely by the company's own funds, maintaining a financial structure that does not depend on interest-bearing debt. Against total assets exceeding ¥14,800 million, net assets exceeded ¥12,900 million, and cash and cash equivalents secured ¥4,538 million, ensuring high business continuity even in the face of economic fluctuations.

Under a technical assistance agreement concluded in 1967 with Timesavers, Inc. of the United States, the company holds exclusive manufacturing and sales rights for grinding machines within Japan, as well as non-exclusive sales rights for Southeast Asia, China, Taiwan, South Korea, and other regions. The agreement remains valid until the end of December 2030, securing a product line that competitors cannot easily imitate.

ENVALITH's Perspective

Woodworking machinery sales in FY2026 (ending March 2026) fell by more than half, down 49.1% year on year to ¥2,140 million. New housing starts announced by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism for FY2025 totaled 711,171 units (down 12.9% year on year), the lowest level in 63 years since FY1962. Structural factors—soaring construction costs, rising mortgage interest rates, and population decline—are compounding one another, making it difficult to foresee a full-fledged recovery in demand for woodworking machinery. Expanded use of domestic timber in public buildings and social infrastructure is a medium- to long-term theme, but its near-term boost to earnings is expected to be limited.

The company's forecast for FY2027 (ending March 2027) calls for net sales of ¥4,500 million (up 16.6% year on year) and operating profit of ¥450 million (up 19.1% year on year), representing increased revenue and profit. However, advances received on the balance sheet decreased by ¥219 million, from ¥501 million at the end of FY2025 (ending March 2025) to ¥282 million at the end of FY2026 (ending March 2026), suggesting a contraction in the order backlog. Achieving the forecast will require continued capture of demand for labor-saving and automation in Machine Tools as well as a recovery in orders for Woodworking Machinery, and both upside and downside risks exist.

The operating margin on net sales for FY2026 (ending March 2026) fell sharply by 8.7 percentage points to 9.8%, down from 18.5% in the prior period. While net sales declined 30.3%, selling, general and administrative expenses declined only 8.1%, to ¥1,209 million from ¥1,315 million in the prior period, as the downward rigidity of fixed costs weighed on profit. In manufacturing costs, the ratio of material costs fell from 64.0% to 49.6% while the ratio of labor costs rose from 28.8% to 41.1%, clearly reflecting the decline in fixed cost absorption capacity due to lower factory utilization. Recovery in factory utilization rates represents the greatest leverage for improving the operating margin.

Growth Strategy

Pursuing growth along four axes: demand for domestic timber, labor-saving investment, AI-enabled product development, and overseas market expansion

Capturing the expansion in manufacturing sector investment in production automation and labor-saving driven by labor shortages and rising labor costs, the company is strengthening proposals for machine tools incorporating AI and other advanced technologies. In FY2026 (ending March 2026), Machine Tools sales increased 29.3% year on year, demonstrating progress in capturing demand.

The company positions the expanded use of domestic timber as a renewable resource in public buildings and social infrastructure facilities as a growth opportunity, and is promoting proposals to customer industries. Amid continued weakness in housing starts, developing demand in the non-residential sector is at the core of the medium- to long-term recovery scenario for Woodworking Machinery.

The company is promoting the leveling of factory utilization rates in response to fluctuations in orders, aiming to maintain and improve fixed cost absorption capacity. In FY2026 (ending March 2026), a sharp decline in sales caused the labor cost ratio within manufacturing cost to rise to 41.1%, manifesting the impact of lower utilization rates. Recovery in utilization rates is the greatest leverage point for improving profit margins.

The company is implementing new advanced technologies, including AI, into its products to enhance added value and strengthen its ability to propose solutions to customers. This initiative is linked to responding to automation needs in the Machine Tools field, and aims to maintain price competitiveness through product differentiation.
