Business
Riken NPR Co., Ltd. is an operating holding company established in October 2023 through the business integration of Riken Corporation and Nippon Piston Ring Co., Ltd. (transitioning to an operating holding company structure from April 2026). The group comprises 34 consolidated subsidiaries and 6 equity-method affiliates, and operates diversified businesses centered on automotive and industrial machinery parts such as Piston Ring, Camshaft, and valve seats, alongside Piping & Construction Materials, Thermal Engineering (for semiconductor manufacturing equipment), and EMC and medical-related businesses. The company maintains global manufacturing and sales networks across Japan, the Americas, Europe, and Asia, with automotive OEMs and the aftermarket as its main customers.
Business Model
In the core Automotive & Industrial Machinery Parts Business, the company earns royalty income through technical assistance agreements and trademark licensing agreements with partners around the world, in addition to mass production supply from its own manufacturing bases (domestic and overseas). The Piping & Construction Materials Business supplements earnings through the manufacture and sale of Pipe Fittings products for the domestic construction industry, while the Thermal Engineering Business contributes through made-to-order production of industrial furnaces and heating elements for semiconductor manufacturing equipment. Rationalization and price optimization driven by management integration synergies are the main drivers of margin improvement.
Company Strengths
The integration of Riken Corporation and Nippon Piston Ring Co., Ltd. established the company's position as the global No.1 supplier in the Piston Ring field. The company holds over 18 technical assistance agreements in Thailand, India, China, South Korea, Mexico, the U.S. and other countries, deploying its manufacturing know-how worldwide. In April 2026, the company made Hastings, a U.S. company with overwhelming brand strength in the North American aftermarket, a subsidiary, achieving mutual complementarity in regions and customer segments.
Since the management integration in October 2023, the company has pursued optimization and rationalization of its production system as well as price normalization. In FY2026 (ending March 2026), net sales declined 4.2% year on year to ¥163,114 million, while operating profit increased 8.8% year on year to ¥12,847 million, achieving profit growth despite the decline in sales. Operating profit in the Automotive & Industrial Machinery Parts Business showed marked improvement, rising 15.0% year on year to ¥10,405 million.
R&D expenses for the consolidated fiscal year under review totaled ¥4,340 million. The company owns four dedicated hydrogen engine evaluation bench rooms and large-scale hydrogen supply facilities, and opened a hydrogen station in Kashiwazaki City, Niigata Prefecture in March 2026. In addition to next-generation Piston Ring technologies such as thick-film DLC coatings and high-toughness PVD coatings, the company is also concurrently advancing new business development in areas such as electric units, functional resins, and medical devices.
ENVALITH's Perspective
Performance Trend
FY2026 (ending March 2026) results: Net sales of ¥163,114 million (down 4.2% year on year), operating profit of ¥12,847 million (up 8.8%), ordinary profit of ¥17,345 million (up 18.2%), and profit attributable to owners of parent of ¥14,027 million (up 60.2%). The decline in sales was mainly due to a slight decrease in domestic automobile production volume and the liquidation of a subsidiary following the dissolution of a joint venture. On the profit side, in addition to management integration synergies, optimization of the production system, and price rationalization, extraordinary income such as foreign exchange gains of ¥579 million and gains of ¥2,975 million from the return of a retirement benefit trust contributed to the results. The operating profit margin improved from 6.9% to 7.9%. The forecast for FY2027 (ending March 2027) calls for net sales of ¥162,000 million (down 0.7% year on year), operating profit of ¥10,000 million (down 22.2%), and net profit of ¥9,000 million (down 35.8%), indicating a significant decline in profit. The forecast factors in geopolitical risk, decreased demand, and increased costs, with assumed exchange rates of ¥150/USD and ¥180/EUR.
Growth Strategy
Aiming to achieve mid-term management plan targets through transition to an operating holding company structure, the Hastings acquisition, and expansion of Next Core businesses
On April 1, 2026, the sales, technology development, and corporate functions of Riken/NPR were absorbed and split into the Company, reorganizing subsidiaries by business (Riken NPR Precision Saitama, Castec, Iwate, Trading, etc.). By abolishing vertically-siloed business lines, the Company aims to accelerate synergy creation and strengthen group governance through a business division structure.
Through RCA in the U.S., acquired Hastings Holding Corp. (the No. 1 replacement piston ring company in North and Central America, holding HMC and PRK under its umbrella) for USD 83,500 thousand. With the Hastings brand added to the RIKEN and NPR brands, the Company secures a global top position. Expansion of market coverage in North/Central America and Europe, along with production and procurement synergies, is expected.
The Thermal Engineering Business for semiconductors and electronics has been elevated to a reportable segment for focused development. Profit in the 'Others' segment, which includes the EMC Business and medical-related products, expanded sharply, up 39.0% year on year. The Company will continue its policy of active investment and M&A utilization for 'Next Core Businesses' under the mid-term management plan, promoting reduced dependence on internal combustion engines and diversification of its earnings base.
The Company targets total shareholder returns of ¥20.0 billion over the three-year period from FY2025 (ending March 2025) through FY2027 (ending March 2027). The annual dividend for FY2026 (ending March 2026) is ¥210 (a substantial increase from ¥130 in the previous period), with a payout ratio of 40.3%. The forecast dividend for FY2027 (ending March 2027) is also maintained at an annual ¥210 (interim ¥80, year-end ¥130). The payout ratio is expected to rise to 62.8%, reflecting the projected decline in net income.
