Business Details

The Company (Toami Corporation), Sumikura Steel Co., Ltd., and FD Techno Co., Ltd. manufacture and sell Wire & Bar Processed Products (Welded Wire Mesh, Reinforcing Bar Products), Welded Wire Mesh for Precast Concrete Products, Mesh Fencing, and other products domestically. Overseas, SMC TOAMI LIMITED LIABILITY COMPANY manufactures and sells various types of wire mesh in Vietnam. This is a make-to-forecast business serving the construction and civil engineering industries, and it is the core segment, accounting for approximately 74.8% of consolidated net sales in FY2026 (ending March 2026).

Recent Overview

Net sales decreased, but strengthened sales spread management drove a substantial improvement in profit

In the Civil Engineering & Construction Materials Business in FY2026 (ending March 2026), while shipments of wildlife-damage prevention wire mesh increased within the core Wire & Bar Processed Products, overall shipment volumes decreased due to postponement of construction starts and revisions to plans for large-scale projects across general construction works, resulting in net sales of ¥13,749 million (down 3.4% year on year). On the other hand, despite an environment of persistently high material prices and gradually rising logistics costs, the Company focused on securing sales spreads by product, resulting in a substantial improvement in segment profit to ¥585 million (up 76.8% year on year). Capital expenditures decreased from ¥667 million in the prior period to ¥313 million.

Growth Drivers

  • Steady public construction investment sustaining demand for civil engineering materials
  • Earnings contribution from increased shipments of wildlife-damage prevention wire mesh and certain other items
  • Improved profitability through strengthened management of sales spreads by product (segment profit margin of 4.3% in FY2026 ending March 2026, improved from 2.3% in the prior period)
  • Recording of equity in earnings of affiliates (¥104 million in FY2026 ending March 2026) reflecting the earnings recovery of equity-method affiliate SMC TOAMI LLC
  • Initiatives to enhance customer value and restructure the business under the medium-term management plan (April 2024 to March 2027)

Risks

  • Risk of decreased shipment volumes due to postponement of construction starts and plan revisions for large-scale construction projects
  • Risk of deteriorating cost ratios due to persistently high prices of steel and other materials
  • Risk of difficulty passing on increased labor and logistics costs to selling prices
  • Continued prolongation of construction periods and ongoing labor shortages due to overtime work limit regulations in the construction industry
  • Risk of additional losses (allowance for doubtful accounts, debt waivers, etc.) associated with deterioration in the financial condition of equity-method affiliate SMC TOAMI LLC
  • Risk of raw material procurement difficulties and sharp price increases due to geopolitical risks including trade policy under the U.S. Trump administration
