Business

Nippon Seiro Co., Ltd. was established in 1951 and is a dedicated wax manufacturer listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Standard Market. Centered on Petroleum Wax (Paraffin and Microcrystalline), it manufactures, processes, and sells various modified products and Heavy Oil. As Japan's only dedicated wax manufacturer, it possesses proprietary technology and conducts domestic sales (approximately 67% of net sales) and exports (approximately 28%). Its consolidated subsidiaries include Techno Wax Co., Ltd. (contract manufacturing) and Nippon Seiro (Thailand) Co., Ltd. (Thailand plant), and it maintains an R&D center at its Tsukuba office. Its main customers include Ando Parachemy Co., Ltd. (13.1% of net sales), and it supplies a wide range of industries including ink, paint, cosmetics, and food packaging.

Business Model

A vertically integrated manufacturing and sales model that procures petroleum-based raw materials derived from crude oil, refines and processes them at the Tokuyama Plant (Yamaguchi Prefecture) into wax products. The company operates primarily on a make-to-forecast basis, selling directly to domestic and overseas customers. Revenue is structured as sales volume × unit selling price, with a shift toward high-value-added products and price revisions to raise unit prices serving as the main drivers of profit improvement. In the fiscal year ending December 2025, the cost of sales ratio was approximately 82%, a high level, making the management of the margin between raw material costs and selling prices key to profitability.

Company Strengths

As Japan's only dedicated wax manufacturer, the company holds a diverse product lineup ranging from Petroleum Wax (Paraffin and Microcrystalline) to various modified products. Building on manufacturing technology and know-how accumulated over more than 70 years since its establishment in 1951, it has constructed a product development and service delivery system capable of meeting all customer requirements.

Operating cash flow for FY2025 (ending December 2025) reached ¥3,686 million (up ¥743 million year on year). The company executed inventory reduction (down ¥2,312 million) as planned and made an early repayment of ¥1,500 million in principal out of the ¥3,000 million capital subordinated loan. Financial health is being steadily strengthened.

The company has strengthened its R&D structure based on the newly established R&D Center at the Tsukuba Plant. R&D expenses for FY2025 (ending December 2025) amounted to ¥135 million. It has filed two patent applications for establishing a manufacturing method for Rice Wax, and has also achieved new adoption of Water-based Wax Emulsion for food packaging applications.

ENVALITH's Perspective

Operating profit of ¥479 million in 1Q FY2026 represents a substantial 97.4% increase from ¥243 million in the same period of the prior year. Progress toward the full-year forecast of ¥1,800 million stands at 26.6%, which can be assessed as a generally solid start even taking seasonality into account. Cost of sales decreased by ¥57 million, from ¥3,497 million in the same period of the prior year to ¥3,440 million, while net sales increased by ¥187 million, and the fact that all three factors—volume, unit price, and cost—improved in tandem deserves recognition. However, close attention should be paid to how the sudden shift in the Iran situation at the end of February may affect crude oil procurement costs and demand going forward.

The full-year earnings forecast announced on February 16, 2026 (net sales of ¥21,100 million, operating profit of ¥1,800 million, ordinary profit of ¥1,300 million, and net income of ¥800 million) remains unchanged as of the end of 1Q. As an external factor, management itself has noted the risk that the sudden shift in the Iran situation at the end of February could lead to higher crude oil prices and put downward pressure on the global economy. If rising raw material costs push up cost of sales, the cost improvement effect confirmed in 1Q could reverse, and developments in the second half will be key to achieving the full-year forecast.

While the equity ratio at the end of 1Q FY2026 stood at 24.1%, showing an improving trend, total shareholders' equity remained at only ¥962 million against total assets of ¥27,761 million, and the structure in which land revaluation surplus of ¥5,477 million accounts for the majority of net assets remains unchanged. The gap between diluted quarterly net income per share (¥10.44) and basic EPS (¥13.61) suggests dilution risk associated with the capital subordinated loan, and investors should continue to monitor the timing of the completion of financial soundness improvements and the scale of the dilution.

Growth Strategy

Three pillars: focus on high-value-added wax, renewal of the core plant, and financial soundness improvement

Promoting the development and sales expansion of new high-value-added products such as Rice Wax and Water-based Wax Emulsion. Established a technology development foundation through the establishment of a new R&D center and patent applications. In Q1 FY2026, the company achieved a rise in export wax unit prices and a 2.6% increase in domestic wax unit prices, with the effects of value enhancement beginning to appear in the numbers.

Currently undertaking the renewal of the core plant, aiming to introduce new product manufacturing equipment and improve production efficiency and quality. In Q1 FY2026, the company recorded a loss on retirement of fixed assets of ¥46 million as an extraordinary loss in connection with the "renewal of the core plant," confirming that the construction work is progressing. This is positioned as a touchstone for strengthening medium-term competitiveness.

Reduced interest expenses through progress in repaying subordinated loans with equity characteristics (Q1 FY2026: ¥121 million, down ¥33 million from ¥154 million in the same period of the previous year). Short-term borrowings were also reduced to ¥11,429 million at the end of Q1 FY2026 (from ¥12,000 million at the end of the previous fiscal year). The equity ratio improved to 24.1%. Reduction in financial costs directly contributes to raising the level of profit, with continued repayment being a key task.
