Business
beeGREE Inc. operates two business segments: the Platform Segment, centered on the digital comic distribution service "Manga Oukoku", and the Content Segment, centered on the Bunkasha Group. Since its launch in 2006, Manga Oukoku has grown into one of Japan's leading digital comic platforms, boasting 9 million members and a cumulative total of 2.5 billion downloads. Bunkasha is a general publisher specializing in manga for women, with digital sales accounting for the majority of its revenue. Through a capital and business alliance with Nippon Television Network Corporation, the company is promoting the expansion of IP creation and utilization, aiming to become a "content produce company that succeeds globally". Its main customers are manga readers using smartphones and tablets, as well as consumers of women's-focused content.
Business Model
In the Platform Segment, the company adopts a user-payment model in which users purchase points to consume content. Users can combine a monthly plan with pay-as-you-go charges, and a point program offering up to 50% cashback daily functions to cultivate loyal customers. Direct contracts with over 2,000 publishers and authors eliminate intermediary margins, enabling high-margin revenue distribution. In the Content Segment, Bunkasha secures earnings primarily through digital publishing of manga aimed at women, while Print Publishing maintains profitability through cost control.
Company Strengths
Rather than going through the intermediary distribution companies common in the e-book industry, the company holds over 2,000 direct contracts with authors and publishers. By eliminating intermediary margins, it achieves high-margin revenue distribution for both copyright holders and itself, while also enabling the sourcing of previously undistributed or out-of-print titles and flexible campaign execution.
With over 19 years of operating history since the service launched in 2006, the company surpassed 9 million members in January 2025 and reached 2.5 billion cumulative downloads in July 2025. It has been ranked No. 1 for perceived value ('Otoku-kan No.1') in a digital comic service survey conducted by a third-party research organization, and its brand recognition and substantial customer base serve as differentiating factors versus competitors.
The company has developed in-house its own content viewer, "Next Viewer," which supports both page and panel (koma) viewing formats. In addition, it has implemented a proprietary AI recommendation feature based on user purchase and browsing data, contributing to site optimization and improved retention rates. The accumulated big data is also utilized in content production.
ENVALITH's Perspective
Performance Trend
Over the past five fiscal years, revenue peaked at ¥19,081 million in FY2023 and has continued on a declining trend, falling to ¥16,720 million in FY2025. Cumulative revenue for 1Q FY2026 was ¥3,767 million (down 9.1% year-on-year), continuing the revenue decline trend. Operating profit was ¥185 million (down 19.2% year-on-year), and net income attributable to owners of the parent was ¥31 million (down 66.9% year-on-year), a substantial deterioration. The sharp drop in net income was due to income taxes of ¥141 million accounting for the majority of pre-tax profit of ¥172 million. As external factors, intensifying competition in the digital book market and the continued shrinkage of the print publishing market persist, increasing the severity of the business environment. The full-year forecast (revenue of ¥17,091 million, up 2.2% year-on-year, and operating profit of ¥1,491 million, up 9.0% year-on-year) remains unchanged, but the 1Q progress rate remains at a low level.
Growth Strategy
Three pillars: differentiation of "Manga Oukoku", creation of proprietary content, and IP expansion through external partnerships
The company aims to retain and cultivate heavy users with strong willingness to pay, thereby increasing the number of paying users and per-customer spending. In 1Q FY2026, this initiative was implemented alongside advertising cost reductions, but it has not yet been sufficient to offset the decline in active user numbers, and "Manga Oukoku" sales continued to decline, down 8.9% year on year.
To acquire new users for "Manga Oukoku" and expand brand awareness, the company launched social media marketing utilizing short-form video in 1Q FY2026. As this initiative has only just become fully operational, its contribution to user growth remains to be verified going forward.
In the digital comic distribution service on "Hulu", operated in partnership with HJ Holdings, the company began full-scale implementation of various new user acquisition measures starting in 1Q FY2026. Third-party distribution sales in the Platform Segment expanded to approximately 2.6 times the year-ago level (¥133 million), indicating that certain results are beginning to emerge.
External licensing sales of the company's proprietary original works have been trending favorably, and awareness of IP continues to rise through television drama adaptations of Bunkasha Group works (two titles aired on TV Tokyo in January and March 2026). Through multifaceted utilization of content assets, the company aims to boost revenue across both the Platform and Content Segments.
