Business

Daido Limited is a long-established textile company founded in 1879, listed on the Standard Market of the Tokyo Stock Exchange and the Premier Market of the Nagoya Stock Exchange. Its core apparel business encompasses a diverse range of brands and operations, including Japan Blue (which owns MOMOTARO JEANS and Japan Blue Jeans), Brooks Brothers (Japan), NEWYORKER, and the Italian material manufacturer PONTETORTO, covering a broad spectrum from textile materials for business customers to men's and women's apparel for consumers. In the real estate leasing business, the company secures stable earnings centered on the "Dynacity" shopping center in Odawara. Of the group's total revenue of ¥32,502 million, the apparel business accounts for approximately 90%.

Business Model

In the apparel business, the company provides value through vertical integration spanning material manufacturing (PONTETORTO) to retail (MOMOTARO JEANS, Brooks Brothers, etc.), approaching different customer segments with each brand. The real estate leasing business stabilizes the group's earnings base through rental income centered on Dynacity (operating margin of 28.1%). The structure aims for non-continuous growth through a capital allocation strategy that redeploys gains from real estate sales into M&A and growth investments.

Company Strengths

In the apparel business, the company holds brands targeting different customer segments and price points—MOMOTARO JEANS, Brooks Brothers, NEWYORKER, and PONTETORTO—diversifying single-brand risk. The real estate leasing business (Dynacity) is a highly profitable segment boasting an operating margin of 28.1%, complementing the volatility risk of the apparel business and enhancing overall group earnings stability.

Japan Blue Co., Ltd., which became a consolidated subsidiary in August 2025, continues to grow MOMOTARO JEANS and Japan Blue Jeans at a pace exceeding initial acquisition assumptions. The incorporation of half a year's worth of results from the third quarter drove the apparel business's first operating profit in 7 fiscal periods (¥759 million), significantly contributing to the group's first overall operating profit in 13 fiscal periods (¥371 million).

The company has a history of over 145 years, having transformed its business domain in step with the times—from cotton fabric manufacturing to wool fabrics, apparel product retail, and real estate leasing utilizing former factory sites. Most recently, it sold a hotel property in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo (March 2025) and an office building in Bunkyo-ku (September 2025, book value ¥6,042 million), applying the proceeds to M&A and shareholder returns, demonstrating a track record of agile asset utilization.

ENVALITH's Perspective

Operating profit of ¥371 million in FY2026 (ending March 2026) marks the first return to profitability in 13 periods, and it is commendable that this achieved the second-year target (¥365 million) of the First Medium-Term Management Plan. However, the operating margin remained low at 1.1%, with ordinary profit of ¥177 million and an equity ratio of 27.3%, indicating that the financial base remains fragile. The bulk of net income of ¥1,893 million depends on non-recurring items—gain on sale of investment securities of ¥1,608 million and deferred income tax adjustment of ¥(1,626) million—so continued confirmation of the recovery in core earning power is necessary.

The company's forecast sets ambitious figures of net sales of ¥40,000 million (up 23.1% year on year) and operating profit of ¥1,500 million (up 304.2% year on year). The main drivers of profit growth are expected to be the full-year contribution of Japan Blue (only a half-year contribution in the prior period), the non-recurrence of ¥228 million in Japan Blue acquisition-related expenses, and the continued recovery of PONTETORTO. On the other hand, there are many variables that will determine achievement, including the profit contribution after the withdrawal from unprofitable NEWYORKER stores, and external factors such as the impact of US tariff policy and price increases on consumer sentiment.

At the end of FY2026 (ending March 2026), short-term borrowings stood at ¥7,976 million (versus ¥6,677 million in the prior period), and the current portion of long-term borrowings due within one year was ¥3,385 million (versus ¥672 million in the prior period), with current liabilities surging from ¥13,940 million to ¥18,922 million. Long-term borrowings decreased sharply from ¥5,130 million to ¥650 million, reflecting a shift toward shorter-term borrowing. Operating cash flow remained at a low level of ¥423 million, and the ratio of interest-bearing debt to cash flow stayed elevated at 28.4 years. Continued monitoring is warranted as a risk factor, given the ongoing reliance on fundraising through asset sales in financial management.

Growth Strategy

Under the first and second medium-term management plans, the company is advancing M&A, brand strengthening, and improved asset efficiency.

The company is accelerating new domestic store openings for MOMOTARO JEANS and Japan Blue Jeans., while planning a pop-up store opening in Paris in June 2026. Under the vision of "evolution into a global denim maison originating from Japan," the company aims to achieve dramatic growth by capturing overseas markets.

The company is promoting increased brand awareness through expanded advertising strategies and acquiring new customer segments through the development of new categories such as women's and golf lines. Sales have expanded due to the effect of product development and collaboration projects targeting the Japanese market, but profit declined year on year due to increased sale (discount) sales, making profitability improvement a key challenge.

The company implemented large-scale withdrawal from unprofitable stores and launched the new label "Park Slope NEWYOKER" in March 2026, centered on outlets and EC. It aims to improve profitability through value chain reform and organizational reform, and to revitalize the brand through a comprehensive redesign spanning product planning to sales tailored to target customers.

For fashion apparel, the company is strengthening proposal-based sales to major fast fashion brands to expand orders, while for sports apparel, it is working on developing high-performance materials aimed at cultivating major sports brands. During the current period, a steady recovery trend was confirmed, primarily in sports apparel.

Film Inc., in which the company acquired a 45% equity stake in April 2026, will be made an equity-method affiliate, with contribution to consolidated earnings expected from the second quarter of the consolidated fiscal period of FY2027 (ending March 2027). This is part of the business portfolio restructuring, including M&A.

The company positions FY2027 (ending March 2027) as the final year of its first medium-term management plan, targeting operating profit of ¥1,500 million and ROE of 8%. In FY2026 (ending March 2026), the company achieved operating profit of ¥371 million, clearing the second-year target. The full-year forecast calls for operating profit of ¥1,500 million (up 304.2% year on year).
