Business
Nisshinbo Holdings is an operating holding company founded in 1907, overseeing 92 subsidiaries and 8 affiliated companies. Its core Wireless & Communications business (Japan Radio Co. and Kokusai Electric) supports social infrastructure such as disaster-prevention systems, defense equipment, maritime communications, and railway radio systems, accounting for approximately 50% of consolidated revenue. In addition, the company operates in eight segments: analog semiconductors (Microdevices), automotive brake friction materials (Brakes), precision molded products and EBS components (Precision Instruments), functional chemicals and carbon products (Chemicals), wrinkle-resistant shirts and functional materials (Textiles), and commercial facility leasing and real estate sales (Real Estate). Major customers span both public and private sectors, including the Ministry of Defense, local governments, telecom carriers, and automakers.
Business Model
The Wireless & Communications segment operates primarily on a build-to-order basis, with an order backlog of ¥277,568 million at the end of FY2025 (ending December 2025) serving as a leading indicator of revenue, providing high earnings visibility. In addition to equipment sales for defense, disaster prevention, and maritime applications, the segment also secures recurring revenue through maintenance services and the aftermarket. The Materials segment (brakes, precision equipment, chemicals, and textiles) supplies mass-produced products to automobile and electrical equipment manufacturers, while the Real Estate segment combines leasing of commercial facilities (stable income) with property sales (one-time income). The company invests ¥23,262 million in R&D expenses to maintain its technological foundation.
Company Strengths
The order backlog in the Wireless & Communications segment at the end of FY2025 (ending December 2025) reached ¥277,568 million (up 17.9% year-on-year), exceeding the segment's annual sales of ¥251,837 million. Orders from the Ministry of Defense based on the Defense Buildup Program and demand for disaster prevention system upgrades from local governments continue to accumulate, providing high visibility for medium-term sales.
The Japan Radio Co. group handles special equipment business for the Ministry of Defense, disaster prevention radio systems for local governments, and marine systems for merchant vessels, capturing structural demand driven by national strategy and increasingly severe disasters. The addition of the JRC Kokusai Denki group (made a subsidiary in December 2023) has expanded the company's presence in areas such as products for mobile carriers and railway radio systems.
In FY2025 (ending December 2025), the equity ratio improved significantly to 43.0% (up 3.3 percentage points year-on-year), with an interest coverage ratio of 17.0x and a debt repayment period of 3.7 years. Operating cash flow of ¥49,337 million was secured, enabling a net reduction of ¥27,379 million in short-term borrowings and ¥9,214 million in long-term borrowings.
ENVALITH's Perspective
Performance Trend
Revenue over the past five fiscal years peaked at ¥541,211 million in FY2023, declined to ¥494,746 million in FY2024, and recovered slightly to ¥502,339 million in FY2025. Operating profit rebounded sharply from a low of ¥12,453 million in FY2023 to ¥26,401 million in FY2025, reaching its highest level in the past five years. For Q1 of FY2026 (fiscal year ending December 2026), revenue was ¥147,692 million (down 2.3% year on year) and operating profit was ¥20,316 million (down 4.6% year on year). The main reason for the decline in both revenue and profit was the drop-off of large-scale real estate spot sales recorded in the same period of the previous year (Ario Nishiarai and a Minato Ward condominium). As an external factor, the wireless and communications business achieved growth in both revenue and profit, benefiting from policy tailwinds such as the Defense Buildup Program and the National Resilience Plan. Comprehensive income improved substantially to ¥19,795 million (up 276.1% year on year), driven by an improvement in the foreign currency translation adjustment account (from ¥-6,200 million in the same period of the previous year to ¥1,690 million in the current period) and an increase in valuation difference on available-for-sale securities (¥3,967 million).
Growth Strategy
Promoting the transformation into a total wireless communications engineering company based on the 'Blueprint for Transformation'
Against the backdrop of the Defense Buildup Program and the mid-term implementation plan for national resilience, order expansion continues in the Special Equipment business, Solutions business, and Marine Systems business. Results are becoming visible, with segment profit of ¥19,088 million in Q1 FY2026 (ending December 2026) (up 53.8% year on year), and revenue visibility is improving as the order backlog builds up.
Recovery in orders for automotive (HEV, diesel), industrial machinery, and consumer products in the Electronic Devices business, together with product mix improvement in the Microwave business, led to segment profit of ¥145 million in Q1 FY2026 (ending December 2026) (an improvement of ¥3,293 million year on year). Continued cost reduction effects from structural reform are key to entrenching profitability.
Across the Brakes, Precision Equipment, Chemicals, and Fibers businesses, the shift toward functional materials for electrification, decarbonization, and electronics is being promoted. The Precision Equipment business achieved increased profit through next-generation EBS parts and medical-related products (segment profit of ¥922 million, up 43.5% year on year). Fibers and Chemicals continue to post losses or low profitability, and the transition remains ongoing.
In the Connected Systems business, which integrates the former ICT & Mechatronics business and Mobility business, increased revenue and improved profit and loss were achieved through higher orders in the railway wireless systems field and cost reduction effects from structural reform. Expansion of new business opportunities utilizing the EDMS platform is also being pursued in parallel.
