Business Details

The domestic footwear retail business operated by the Company and its consolidated subsidiaries. It operates multiple formats including "ABC-MART," "GRANDSTAGE," "ABC-MART SPORTS," and "OSHMAN'S," selling national brand products as well as its own private brands. Stores are centered on suburban shopping centers, with efforts also underway to capture inbound demand and strengthen digital sales. As of the end of Q1 FY2027 (ending February 2027), the number of domestic stores stood at 1,115.

Recent Overview

Domestic sales rose 7.2% year-on-year, driven by increased inbound demand and strong sales of high-priced products.

In Q1 FY2027 (ending February 2027) (March–May 2026), domestic sales were ¥77,661 million (up 7.2% year-on-year), and segment profit was ¥18,922 million (up 7.2% year-on-year). Growth was driven by increased inbound consumption amid yen depreciation and strong sales of high-priced national brand sneakers, genuine leather boots, and sports apparel. While a decline in items purchased per customer was observed due to rising prices, this was offset by an increase in average customer spend. During the quarter, 10 stores were opened and 2 closed, and 21 stores were renovated (including 15 floor expansions and 13 format conversions).

Growth Drivers

  • Expanded product lineup and broader customer base driven by rapidly growing demand for hands-free shoes (including diversification into sandals and boots)
  • Increase in inbound demand (inflow of visitors to Japan into GRANDSTAGE and ABC-MART driven by yen depreciation and rising global brand recognition)
  • Mutual customer traffic effects from the expansion of the GRANDSTAGE 4.0 format, ABC-MART 2.0 format, and OSHMAN'S, along with multi-format stores (147 stores)
  • Rising average customer spend driven by stronger proper-price sales of high-priced national brand sneakers and sports apparel
  • Enhanced brand recognition and customer traffic through promotional campaigns featuring well-known artists
  • Advancement of an omnichannel strategy leveraging digital infrastructure

Risks

  • Impact on customer traffic and items purchased per customer due to increasingly frugal consumer behavior amid continued price increases (a decline in items purchased per customer was again observed this quarter)
  • Risk of margin pressure from rising fixed costs, including personnel expenses (directors' compensation and salaries up 6.1% year-on-year) and rent (up 5.6% year-on-year)
  • Impairment losses arising from scrap-and-build and floor expansion/renovation activities (impairment loss of ¥41 million recorded this quarter)
  • Changes in the competitive environment due to intensifying price competition with competitors and stronger direct sales efforts by national brands
  • Difficulty securing labor (staffing for multi-store operations remains a challenge)
  • Risk of rising footwear procurement costs due to the impact of U.S. tariff policy
