Business

Digital Arts Inc. is a Japan-based security software maker founded in 1995, offering the Web security product "i-FILTER" and email security product "m-FILTER" as its mainstay products, alongside file encryption solution "FinalCode", integrated authentication solution "a-FILTER", and zero-trust solution "Z-FILTER". The company's main customers span a wide range including corporations, government agencies, educational institutions, and households, with a user base of approximately 15 million as of the end of March 2026. The company is listed on the Prime Market of the Tokyo Stock Exchange. It operates as a single-segment security business, running its group operations through 3 consolidated subsidiaries.

Business Model

Revenue is recognized primarily through indirect sales via distributors (the two main partners being Daiwabo Information System at 33.4% and SB C&S at 17.9%), with on-premises license products recognized as a lump sum at shipment and cloud service products recognized on a monthly pro-rata basis over the service provision period. The company is building up its cloud order backlog through large-scale public sector projects such as the GIGA School Program, and is in the process of transitioning this into stable service revenue from the next fiscal period onward. The operating margin for FY2026 (ending March 2026) remains at a high level of 44.2%.

Company Strengths

The company's proprietary "white-list operation" model, which permits only safe communications and behaviors, is based on a proprietary database covering domestically searchable URLs and safe sources, and addresses both known and unknown threats. As of the end of March 2026, the user base numbered approximately 15 million, with growing recognition centered on corporations, government agencies, and educational institutions. This large user base constitutes a competitive advantage, creating a virtuous cycle of data accumulation and product improvement.

In FY2026 (ending March 2026), the operating margin stood at 44.2% (operating profit of ¥4,791 million), maintaining exceptionally high profitability for a software business. With zero interest-bearing debt and cash and cash equivalents reaching ¥23,083 million, the company has a robust financial foundation capable of funding growth investments and shareholder returns from internal resources. ROE also remained at a high level of 19.2%, indicating strong capital efficiency.

The company has obtained ISO/IEC 27001 (2020), ISO/IEC 27017 (2020), and ISMAP (2021) certifications. In March 2025, it additionally registered three products—m-FILTER MailAdviser, a-FILTER, and f-FILTER—and in January 2026, registered two more products including i-FILTER@Cloud GIGA School Edition. This certification framework, which satisfies procurement requirements for government and public institutions, makes it difficult for competitors to enter the market.

ENVALITH's Perspective

In FY2026 (ending March 2026), order intake reached ¥16,604 million (up 57.1% year-on-year), substantially exceeding net sales of ¥10,835 million, with the resulting advance received balance of ¥7,800 million recorded on the balance sheet. Through monthly proportional recognition of cloud service products, this order backlog will progressively materialize as net sales in subsequent periods. While the likelihood of achieving the company's FY2027 (ending March 2027) net sales forecast of ¥12,000 million (up 10.8% year-on-year) can be assessed as high, the order intake forecast of ¥13,500 million (down 18.7% year-on-year) reflects the completion of the second phase of GIGA School Program projects, and warrants close attention as a potential growth pain point from FY2028 (ending March 2028) onward.

The company has stated that Z-FILTER, launched for sale in November 2025, is "expected to become a source of revenue in the next fiscal period," positioning it as a key factor for corporate market growth in FY2027 (ending March 2027). At the same time, the company has clearly signaled a shift in its sales structure away from reliance on distributors toward strengthening direct engagement with end users. This strategic shift requires weighing the risk of friction in distributor relationships against the benefits of enhanced deal origination and proposal precision through direct sales. Sales concentration in the two major distributors (Daiwabo Information System, ¥3,618 million; SB C&S, ¥1,942 million) remains a structural risk.

In FY2026 (ending March 2026), the equity ratio declined from 76.6% to 66.1%. This was primarily due to a rise in total assets driven by an increase in advances received (up ¥3,717 million) associated with large-volume orders from the second phase of GIGA School Program projects, and not due to an increase in interest-bearing debt or impairment of net assets. Net assets increased from ¥17,365 million to ¥18,454 million, indicating that financial soundness has been maintained. As for the external environment, tailwinds from strengthened cybersecurity policy, progress in DX, and the spread of generative AI are expected to continue over the medium to long term; however, competitors also benefit from these same tailwinds, making the maintenance of product competitiveness a prerequisite.

Growth Strategy

Toward the final year of the medium-term plan, FY2027 (ending March 2026), the company is advancing the monetization of Z-FILTER, expansion of public-sector market share, and efficiency gains through AI utilization

A domestically developed zero-trust security product for which official sales commenced on November 4, 2025. Built around the "White Operation" concept, it provides everything from authentication to access control on a single platform. Since the launch, orders have steadily accumulated, and the product is expected to contribute meaningfully to revenue in the next fiscal period. The company will continue to accelerate collaboration with sales agents and enhance functionality, aiming to establish it as a pillar of its medium- to long-term revenue base.

Contract value for the public sector expanded significantly, up 106.7% year on year to ¥10,639 million. The company achieved both a higher win rate and higher deal unit prices compared with the first phase. Competitiveness was strengthened through ISMAP registration and the addition of a feature to visualize digital textbook usage status. Expansion into next-generation school administration DX and municipal projects is also progressing steadily, with the accumulation of cloud-related order backlog forming a stable revenue base for the next fiscal period and beyond.

The company has clearly articulated a shift from its traditional agent-dependent model to a sales structure in which it strengthens direct engagement with end users, directly grasps customer challenges, and drives proposal activities on that basis. By visualizing and managing each stage of the funnel—from deal creation through to order acquisition—under its own leadership, and by rolling out successful cases to sales agents, the company aims to improve the reproducibility of partner sales and raise the order acquisition rate.

AI is being utilized companywide, including for coding support and specification document creation in the development department, lead scoring and proposal material preparation in the sales department, streamlining of inquiry response in the support department, and automation of routine tasks in the administrative department. The company aims to build a highly efficient business operation base that does not rely solely on headcount increases, achieving both growth investment and improved profitability.

For "i-Filter 10," a comprehensive security product for individual users, the company is promoting collaboration with existing and new sales agents as well as PC manufacturers with the aim of expanding beyond its traditional child-focused market into the adult market. Although this did not lead to monetization in the current period, the company continues to pursue, as a medium- to long-term goal, the expanded application of the "White Operation" model to the household market by leveraging its user base of approximately 15 million users.
