Calbee, Inc.
2229・Prime Market・Foods
Business
Calbee, Inc., founded in 1949, is Japan's largest snack food manufacturer, with a portfolio of strong brands including Potato Chips, Jagarico, and Frugra. The group comprises 7 domestic and 16 overseas subsidiaries along with 3 affiliated companies, and manufactures and sells potato-based, wheat-based, and corn-based snack foods as well as cereal products. Domestically, the company operates its own network of factories and a direct sales system, while overseas it has expanded into the United States, the United Kingdom, Indonesia, China, South Korea, Australia, and other markets. Calbee is also an equity-method affiliate of PepsiCo, Inc., and through a strategic alliance with PepsiCo, it holds the exclusive license to sell Frito-Lay snack foods within Japan. In FY2026 (ending March 2026), net sales reached ¥340,151 million, with overseas sales of ¥88,604 million accounting for approximately 26% of the total.
Business Model
The basic earnings structure is a manufacturing-retail model in which snack foods and cereal products manufactured at the company's own factories are sold to retail chains, convenience stores, and other outlets. In Japan, earnings are secured through a combination of unit price improvement via price and specification revisions and increased sales volume, while overseas growth is pursued through a combination of establishing local manufacturing and sales systems and exporting brands originating from Japan. The logistics subsidiary Calbee Logistics handles intra-group logistics, supporting supply chain efficiency.
Company Strengths
The company holds multiple flagship brands including Potato Chips (net sales of ¥102,504 million in FY2026, ending March 2026), Jagarico (net sales of ¥50,326 million), and Frugra, with domestic snack food sales reaching ¥234,221 million (before deduction of rebates, etc.). Cross-brand marketing initiatives and ongoing promotional activities support sales volume.
Through a strategic alliance concluded in 2009, the company acquired Frito-Lay Japan, a subsidiary of PepsiCo, becoming the exclusive licensee for Frito-Lay snack foods in Japan. PepsiCo (holding a 22.01% stake via FLGI) has the right to nominate director candidates, and synergies combining the management capabilities of both companies continue to function. It has also been agreed that no competitive relationship with PepsiCo will arise within Japan, and there are no constraints on overseas expansion.
The company owns multiple proprietary factories in Japan (including the Setouchi Hiroshima Plant, which began operations in January 2025), and has also acquired land for a new plant in the Kanto region. In April 2025, a new research building at the R&D Center (Utsunomiya City, Tochigi Prefecture), with approximately three times the floor area compared to before, was completed, strengthening functions in basic research, applied research, quality research, and taste research. R&D expenses amounted to ¥4,512 million in FY2026 (ending March 2026), and the company has accumulated proprietary processing technology and raw material expertise.
ENVALITH's Perspective
Performance Trend
Revenue rose for five consecutive fiscal years, from ¥245,419 million in FY2022 (ended March 2022) to ¥340,151 million in FY2026 (ending March 2026). Operating profit, however, bottomed out at ¥22,233 million in FY2023 (ended March 2023), recovered to a record high of ¥29,066 million in FY2025 (ended March 2025), and then declined to ¥26,173 million in FY2026 (ending March 2026). This decline was driven by higher fixed costs associated with the operation of the Setouchi Hiroshima plant (depreciation expense of ¥14,812 million, up ¥2,668 million year on year), together with external factors such as inflation-driven increases in raw material and supply costs and a decline in potato yields. Profit attributable to owners of parent fell sharply to ¥17,329 million (down 17.0% year on year), compounded by the reversal of a tax benefit applied in the prior fiscal year. For FY2027 (ending March 2027), the company forecasts revenue of ¥370,000 million (up 8.8%) and operating profit of ¥26,200 million (up 0.1%), indicating continued revenue growth but flat profit, with cost inflation stemming from the situation in the Middle East (an external factor) remaining a downside risk.
Growth Strategy
Under the new growth strategy "Accelerate the Future," the company aims to strengthen the three pillars of earning power, capital efficiency, and growth expectations toward FY2036 (ending March 2036).
The company has set FY2036 (ending March 2036) as its target year, positioning "enhancing earning power," "improving capital efficiency," and "fostering growth expectations" as the pillars for enhancing corporate value. The period through FY2031 (ending March 2031) is designated the "growth investment phase," followed by the "value creation phase," through which corporate value is to be raised in stages. The company is transitioning to this new phase following the final year (FY2026, ending March 2026) of its previous strategy, "Change 2025."
The Setouchi Hiroshima Plant, which began operations in January 2025, is approaching its initially projected utilization rate by the end of 2025, contributing to increased production capacity and improved productivity. Land for the new Kanto plant has already been acquired, and construction is proceeding. Progress on efficiency investment under the three-year plan (FY2024 to FY2026, ending March 2024 to March 2026) stands at 98.3% (actual: ¥58,988 million against a plan of ¥60,000 million).
The company achieved growth of roughly double digits on a local-currency basis across all regions—Europe/US, Asia, and Oceania. Achievements include the nationwide retail chain rollout of the UK's Seabrook brand, local contract manufacturing of Jagabee and Mai Gura in the Greater China region, and entry into the plant-based protein food business through the consolidation of Hodo, Inc. (US) as a subsidiary in August 2025. However, progress on the three-year growth investment remains at only 38.6% (actual: ¥30,845 million against a plan of ¥80,000 million), making acceleration going forward a key challenge.
Under the new growth strategy, the company has adopted a "progressive dividend" policy for the five years from FY2027 to FY2031 (ending March 2027 to March 2031), premised on an increase of at least ¥3 per share each period. Dividends of ¥66 per share (payout ratio of 47.2%) are planned for FY2026 (ending March 2026), and ¥69 per share (payout ratio of 48.2%) for FY2027 (ending March 2027). Cumulative shareholder returns over the three-year period reached ¥30,766 million, exceeding the plan of ¥25,000 million by achieving 123.1% of the target.
