Business Details
Handles production, purchase, distribution, and exhibition (cineplex management) of theatrical films, production and sales of TV movies, production and editing of BS/CS/CATV software, satellite basic broadcasting and general broadcasting (Shochiku Broadcasting Co., Ltd.), production, purchase, and sales of video software, film rights licensing, and development and licensing of music copyrights. It is the core segment aiming for integrated monetization from content production to exhibition and secondary use. In Q1 of FY2027 (ending March 2027), the Theatrical Business overtook this segment in revenue, indicating a shift in relative weighting.
Recent Overview
Revenue increased 1.1% year-on-year, but segment profit fell sharply by 96.0%.
In Q1 of FY2027 (ending March 2027) (March-May 2026), the Film & Video Business posted revenue of ¥11,585 million (up 1.1% year-on-year), a marginal increase, while segment profit fell sharply by 96.0% to ¥16 million (versus ¥416 million in the prior-year period). At the box office, "Detective Conan: Highway Angel of the Devil" was a hit exceeding ¥10 billion in box office revenue, but changes in the composition of distribution revenue and increased costs are believed to have pressured profit. Note that the impairment loss of ¥2,335 million recorded this quarter is attributable to the Theatrical Business and Real Estate Business, with limited direct impact on the Film & Video Business.
Key Products
Growth Drivers
- Accumulation of box office revenue from major hits such as "Detective Conan: Highway Angel of the Devil"
- Expansion of film rights licensing revenue through exclusive streaming agreements with Amazon Prime Video and others
- Global monetization through strong overseas rights sales of "Seihantai na Kimi to Boku" and others
- Expansion of pay TV revenue through new CATV operator introductions for CS broadcasting (including multiple large-scale operators)
- Diversification of program sales revenue through TV anime and drama series production
- Steady progress in DVD/Blu-ray sales securing secondary use revenue
Risks
- Risk that a revenue structure dependent on hit films directly impacts performance when box office results underperform (segment profit fell sharply to ¥16 million in the current quarter)
- Impact on foreign film supply and overseas expansion from US trade policy trends and geopolitical risks
- Suppression of personal consumption and impact on movie theater attendance due to inflation and stagnant real wages
- Risk of fluctuation in film rights revenue due to bargaining power disparity with streaming platforms
- Change in revenue structure following the resolution to withdraw from the BS broadcasting business (Board of Directors resolution, February 2025)
- Impairment loss risk (as demonstrated by the ¥2,335 million impairment loss recorded in the Theatrical Business and Real Estate Business due to the closure of Osaka Shochikuza, facility demolition/closure resolutions can trigger impairment)
