Business
Founded in 1919, Kuribayashi Steamship is a long-established domestic shipping company consisting of the Company, 14 consolidated subsidiaries, and 7 affiliated companies. In its core Marine Transportation Business, the company operates an integrated marine-and-land transport service centered on a domestic scheduled route (operated with a fleet of 6 RORO vessels) connecting Hokkaido and Honshu, combined with an ocean-going near-sea route, port transportation, and land transport. As complementary businesses, the company operates a resort hotel in Noboribetsu City, Hokkaido, engages in real estate leasing centered on Muroran City, and conducts wholesale of fruits, vegetables, beans, and grains. Its major customers are shipper companies in industries such as paper manufacturing, automobiles, and construction materials, and the company is listed on the Standard Market of the Tokyo Stock Exchange.
Business Model
In the Marine Transportation Business, which accounts for approximately 90% of net sales, stable freight revenue from RORO ship operations on the Hokkaido Scheduled Route forms the core of earnings. Through integrated sea-land transportation that completes port cargo handling and land transport within the group, the company enhances added value for shippers. The Real Estate Business functions as a highly profitable, stable revenue source with an operating margin of approximately 50%, while the Hotel Business and wholesale businesses complementarily add to earnings, forming the overall earnings structure.
Company Strengths
A long-established domestic shipping company founded in 1919, having surpassed its 100th anniversary since establishment. On the Hokkaido Scheduled Route, the company is strengthening its RORO vessel fleet to a six-vessel system from October 2025, enhancing transport capacity. As a pioneer that built Japan's first domestic RORO vessel in 1969, the company's accumulated technology and operational know-how serve as a barrier to competitive entry.
The company has built a system capable of providing integrated services from port cargo handling to inland delivery, encompassing land transport subsidiaries such as Kuribayashi Unyu, Yachiyo Unyu, Kyoei Rikuun, Sanriku Unyu, and Yamato Unyu, as well as marine transport subsidiaries such as Seikan Ferry and Kuribayashi Logistics System. In FY2026 (ending March 2026), the Marine Transportation Business segment assets reached ¥52,502 million, with the group as a whole holding the transport infrastructure.
The Real Estate Business is a highly profitable segment, boasting an operating profit margin of approximately 50.6%, with operating profit of ¥288 million against net sales of ¥568 million. The company secures stable rental demand through its leasing business targeting store tenants centered on Muroran City, functioning as a stable source of income that complements the earnings volatility of the Marine Transportation Business.
ENVALITH's Perspective
Performance Trend
Revenue was only slightly higher at ¥53,825 million (up 1.4% year on year), while operating profit deteriorated significantly to ¥2,081 million (down 23.1% year on year). External factors—elevated fuel oil prices and rising labor, crew, and materials/equipment costs—directly hit profitability on the domestic scheduled route. The near-sea route secured a profit increase by focusing on profitable spot cargo, but this was not enough to fully offset the decline. Meanwhile, the recording of a gain on sale of investment securities of ¥2,776 million pushed profit before income taxes up to ¥5,801 million, and profit attributable to owners of parent surged on the surface to ¥3,724 million (up 84.9% year on year). For FY2027 (ending March 2027), the company forecasts net profit of ¥1,700 million (down 54.4% year on year), a sharp decline reflecting the drop-off of the extraordinary gain.
Growth Strategy
Expanding transportation network through modal shift response, group reorganization, and entry into agricultural product logistics
The company continues to actively invest in newbuild vessels and transport equipment in response to modal shift demand from land to marine transportation, driven by the "2024 Problem." Property, plant and equipment and intangible asset additions in the current period expanded to ¥3,694 million, approximately 2.1 times the prior period level (¥1,720 million). Vehicle transport has progressed steadily for both medium/short-distance and long-distance routes.
Suzuki Shoten Co., Ltd., a beans and grains wholesaler based in Hokuto City, Hokkaido, became a wholly owned subsidiary effective September 30, 2025 (deemed transaction date), at an acquisition cost of ¥300 million. The company aims to pursue business synergies by integrating the group's logistics network with Suzuki Shoten's procurement and sales network. Following consolidation, sales in the "Other" segment expanded to ¥2,337 million.
Based on the resolution of the Board of Directors on January 20, 2026, a share exchange to make Sanriku Unyu Co., Ltd. and K-Seven Co., Ltd. wholly owned subsidiaries was executed on April 1, 2026 (simplified share exchange). This strengthens the group's overall transportation network and expands the scope of integrated sea-land transportation services.
In the near-sea route business, where freight rate conditions remain sluggish, the company is focusing on profitability-oriented operations centered on third-country routes, along with securing spot cargo mainly related to biomass. In the current period, despite a decline in revenue, profit increased, reflecting ongoing improvement in profitability through efficient vessel allocation.
