Business
Sanyo Electric Railway was founded in 1907 and, centered on its 63.2km railway line between Kobe and Himeji, operates five segments: the Transportation Business including bus and taxi operations, the Distribution Business centered on Sanyo Department Store, the Real Estate Business covering leasing, sales, and management, the Leisure & Service Business covering food & beverage and sports, and Other Businesses including information processing and worker dispatch. The group, comprised of the Company, 14 subsidiaries, and 1 affiliated company, provides an integrated range of services—from transportation to daily living, consumption, and housing—primarily to residents and visitors along the railway line in southern Hyogo Prefecture. Listed on the Prime Market of the Tokyo Stock Exchange.
Business Model
Built on stable transportation revenue from railway, bus, and taxi operations, the company accumulates high-margin earnings through real estate leasing and sales that leverage land and station facilities along its rail lines. The Distribution Business, including Sanyo Department Store and convenience stores, along with food & beverage and sports facilities, captures consumer demand along the rail lines, while intra-group information processing, construction, and worker dispatch operations generate internal support revenue. The structure pursues consolidated growth by combining fare revisions, new property acquisitions, and new store openings.
Company Strengths
Operating profit for FY2025 reached ¥4,478 million, exceeding the previous Medium-Term Management Plan target of ¥3,050 million by 46.8%. The interest-bearing debt/EBITDA ratio also achieved 5.2x against the target of "maintaining the 6x range." The combination of demand recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and the effects of fare revisions demonstrated earnings power that significantly exceeded the plan.
The Real Estate Business segment recorded segment profit of ¥2,324 million, with an operating margin of approximately 39.9%, the highest level among all segments. The company continues to acquire income-producing real estate, such as "S-Cute Marunouchi" in Naka-ku, Nagoya, and is expanding its portfolio into the Kansai and Greater Tokyo areas. This segment functions as a pillar of stable, high profitability that has reduced reliance on the Transportation Business.
Since its founding in 1907, the company has owned a 63.2km line between Kobe and Himeji, and has operated mutual through-services with Hanshin Electric Railway and Hankyu Railway since 1968. The number of passengers transported in FY2026 (ending March 2026) was 62,084 thousand (up 3.3% year on year). The company continues to implement measures to enhance the value of its rail line, such as making Beppu Station a stop for direct express trains, and possesses a rail line infrastructure base along its route that would be difficult for competitors to replicate in a short period of time.
ENVALITH's Perspective
Performance Trend
Operating revenue, having bottomed out at ¥34,151 million in FY2022 (ended March 2022), continued its recovery trend, reaching ¥40,132 million in FY2026 (ending March 2026), up 4.3% year on year and marking its highest level in five fiscal periods. Operating income rose 10.2% year on year to ¥4,478 million, and ordinary income increased 10.5% year on year to ¥4,626 million, marking a second consecutive year of profit growth. Profit attributable to owners of parent surged 33.4% year on year to ¥4,045 million, boosted in part by the recording of a special gain of ¥1,071 million from the revision of the retirement benefit system. As an external factor, the hosting of the Osaka-Kansai Expo lifted transportation revenue, while the Distribution Business saw lower sales and profit due to declining sales of household goods and women's apparel. Operating cash flow increased substantially year on year to ¥8,020 million, and the financial position also improved. For FY2027 (ending March 2027), net income is expected to decline due to the absence of the special gain and higher expenses, but operating income is projected to remain roughly flat.
Growth Strategy
Aiming for FY2032 operating income of ¥3,800 million through three pillars: maintaining safe transport, developing along the rail lines, and non-railway growth investment
While continuing to benefit from fare revision effects across railway, bus, and taxi operations, the company aims to increase passenger numbers by making Beppu Station a stop for through-limited-express trains and enhancing convenience through the QR code-based digital ticket "SuruQRtto" and touch payment boarding services. The company is also promoting service quality improvements through the construction of new 6000 series rolling stock and renewal of existing rolling stock.
The company continues to acquire income-producing real estate in the Kansai and Tokai regions to steadily build up rental income. It is promoting new sales business initiatives, including the commencement of construction of condominiums and a paid nursing home south of Nishi-Shinmachi Station in Akashi City. The company is also strengthening its medium- to long-term revenue base through the redevelopment of the area around Sanyo Himeji Station and development around major stations such as Sanyo Akashi Station.
The company is capturing demand for daily living needs along its rail lines through new store openings in the Food & Beverage Business (such as the Maneken Sanyo Tarumi Station store) and the opening of fitness facilities in the Sports Business (such as the Anytime Fitness Akashi Station-mae store). While there is short-term pressure on profit due to increased opening costs, the company expects revenue contributions to become substantial as occupancy rates improve.
Operating income of ¥4,478 million for FY2026 (ending March 2026) has already reached a level exceeding the medium-term plan's FY2032 target of ¥3,800 million, putting an early achievement of the plan within sight. The company aims to maintain and improve its profit level while managing cost increase factors such as rising personnel expenses and interest rate risk.
