Business
People Co., Ltd. is an infant toy specialty manufacturer founded in 1977 and listed on the Standard Market of the Tokyo Stock Exchange. The company plans, develops, and sells educational toys for infants and toddlers centered on products such as "Itazura 1-sai Yaritai Houdai," "Pythagoras," and "Okome no Omocha" (rice-based toys), with all manufacturing outsourced. Since 2019, the company has been pursuing business structural reforms, and in May 2025 it launched "1curiosity," the first installment of its curiosity business. In October of the same year, it also introduced the digital educational service "Sawaru TECH," aiming to establish a new business category centered on "children's curiosity" that goes beyond the value provided by standalone toys. Major customers include domestic toy distributors such as Happinet, Kawada, and Nihon Toys "R" Us, and the company also operates overseas in Asian regions including Taiwan and Thailand.
Business Model
The company outsources all product manufacturing to external partners (mainly in China and Vietnam), adopting an asset-light model that avoids losses from reduced utilization during off-peak seasons. Revenue is primarily generated from wholesale sales to domestic toy distributors, with the top four companies (Happinet, Kawada, Japan Toys "R" Us, and Kumamoto) accounting for approximately 75% of net sales. Overseas sales and royalty income are also sources of revenue. Working capital and capital expenditures are funded through equity capital, and the company maintains debt-free management.
Company Strengths
The company holds long-selling series that have maintained market recognition for over 30 years, including "Itazura 1-sai Yaritai Houdai" launched in 1985 and "Pythagoras Series" launched in 1992. In the current period as well, the infant, educational, and constructive toy category accounted for ¥1,391 million in sales, representing 86% of total sales, underpinning the core of the business.
As of the end of January FY2026, the company held an equity ratio of 92.8% and cash and deposits of ¥1,155 million. Total liabilities stood at an extremely low ¥130 million, maintaining debt-free management with zero interest-bearing debt. The company has secured financial stability even during periods of losses amid business structural transformation.
The "1curiosity Series," launched in May 2025, has received recognition through exhibitions and workshops both domestically and internationally, winning multiple prestigious awards in the United Kingdom. The digital educational service "Sawaru TECH" also won multiple awards shortly after its launch, with the quality of the new business receiving external recognition.
ENVALITH's Perspective
Performance Trend
Revenue peaked at ¥7,444 million in FY2023 and has declined for five consecutive periods; cumulative revenue for Q1 of FY2027 (ending January 2027) was ¥267 million (down 7.8% year-on-year). Operating loss narrowed to ¥57 million from ¥82 million in the same period of the previous year, aided by a substantial reduction in SG&A expenses (down approximately ¥42 million year-on-year). An impairment loss of ¥8 million was recorded as an extraordinary loss, resulting in a quarterly net loss of ¥65 million. The forecast for cumulative H1 results is revenue of ¥577 million (down 9.6% from the previous period) and an interim net loss of ¥152 million. In addition to the headwind from a shrinking domestic toy market, the main cause of the revenue decline is that penetration of the curiosity business brand is taking time. Tangible and intangible fixed assets on the financial statements are zero, with the majority of assets consisting of current assets (including cash and deposits of ¥1,134 million).
Growth Strategy
Aiming to transition to a profit-generating phase through the two pillars of the "Curiosity Business" and European expansion
In the first quarter of FY2027 (ending March 2027), the company launched 14 renewed existing products, and plans to add 8 new products during the fiscal year. The strategy is for customer acquisition through "Baby curiosity," targeted at 0-year-olds, to form a repeat-purchase cycle leading to "1curiosity," targeted at 1-year-olds. Favorable word-of-mouth has been confirmed on social media, and series sales have gotten off to a generally solid start.
The company established strategic partnerships in the first quarter with Pointblank Promotions and Familia Events, sales and marketing support firms in the UK and Europe. Discussions are underway for further market expansion centered on "1curiosity." Overseas sales and royalty income stood at ¥28 million (89.8% year-on-year), still on a downward trend, and the emergence of partnership effects will be the focus going forward.
In rebuilding the product lineup based on "children's curiosity," the company decided to adopt "CuriosiToy" as its corporate brand. Leveraging over 40 years of infant observation expertise, the company aims to enhance brand value over the medium to long term as a brand that visualizes curiosity. The company continues active PR activities through PR TIMES STORY, X (formerly Twitter), and the note platform "Pea-tra."
As a short-term measure to improve profitability, the company continues to implement sequential price increases on long-selling products. Within the Pythagoras Series, popularity of high-priced items is rising, and a shift in demand toward products with more substantial set contents has been confirmed. Combined with reduced SG&A expenses (down approximately ¥42 million year-on-year), this has contributed to narrowing the operating loss.
