Recent Overview
Net sales were roughly flat, but operating profit declined 18.0% year on year due to rising costs
In the first quarter of the fiscal year ending December 2026, Printing segment net sales were ¥610,504 million (down 0.1% year on year), remaining roughly flat. Meanwhile, cost of sales rose to ¥338,615 million (up 2.5% year on year), causing gross profit to decline to ¥271,889 million (down 3.1%). Other operating expenses also increased to ¥189,874 million (up 3.1%), resulting in a sharp decline in operating profit to ¥59,873 million (down 18.0%). Key Products
Growth Drivers
- Cost reduction and profitability improvement through production structure reform under Phase VII (consolidation of underutilized sites and greater use of outsourcing)
- Recovery in office multifunction device sales driven by the launch of flagship models in the new imageFORCE series
- Expansion of sales channels in the commercial and industrial printing markets through OEM supply to Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG
- Continued solid sales of inkjet printers, centered on large-tank models
- Creation of new service revenue through the enhancement of AI-driven smart service systems
Risks
- Sluggish demand for office multifunction devices and production equipment due to the continued tendency to postpone investment in the U.S. and European markets
- Structural contraction of the laser printer market, particularly in Europe and China
- Cost increases and market slowdown impacts from additional U.S. tariffs
- Medium- to long-term decline in printing demand due to the progress of paperless initiatives
- Deterioration in profitability due to a rise in the cost of sales ratio (55.5% in FY2026 Q1 versus 54.1% in the same period of the prior year)
- Decline in operating margin due to an increase in other operating expenses (up 3.1% year on year)
