Business Details
The Life Care Business consists of two categories: Healthcare-related products, which include eyeglass lenses and contact lenses, and Medical-related products, which include endoscopes, intraocular lenses, and artificial bones. It is a high-barrier-to-entry business requiring approval and authorization from regulatory authorities in each country, and positions global aging and rising living standards in emerging countries as long-term growth drivers. The segment conducts manufacturing and sales globally, with regional headquarters in Europe, the Americas, and Asia.
Recent Overview
Revenue increased in both categories; segment profit rose sharply by 43.3% year-on-year
In FY2026 (ending March 2026), the Life Care Business achieved revenue of ¥590,680 million (up 7.2% year-on-year) and segment profit of ¥129,531 million (up 43.3% year-on-year), a substantial increase in profit. Healthcare was driven by stable sales of high-value-added eyeglass lenses in Europe and strong performance of hoyaONE. Medical revenue increased due to endoscopes, intraocular lenses, and washer-disinfectors. In addition, a difference between the estimated and actual acquisition amount related to the acquisition of equity in a Chinese intraocular lens joint venture (the actual acquisition amount was lower than the initially estimated amount) was recognized as one-time income, boosting segment profit.
Key Products
Growth Drivers
- Long-term expansion of demand for vision correction and medical care driven by global aging and economic growth in emerging countries
- Stable demand for high-value-added eyeglass lenses such as progressive lenses and the Meiryo Series in the European market
- Expansion of the private brand (hoyaONE) for contact lenses and strengthening of the sales network through new store openings
- Continued sales growth of intraocular lenses for cataract surgery in Japan and Europe
- Strong demand in the other medical-related products category, such as endoscope washer-disinfectors
Risks
- Impact on endoscopes and intraocular lenses from deterioration in China's macro environment (anti-corruption campaign and centralized procurement system)
- Downward price pressure on medical endoscopes in the Americas
- Continued risk of customer inventory adjustments for chromatography carriers used in pharmaceutical applications
- Regulatory risks and costs related to obtaining approvals and authorizations from regulatory authorities in each country
- IT system failure risk (risk of recurrence of the system failure that occurred in March 2024)
- Foreign exchange fluctuation risk (given a high proportion of overseas sales, affected by both yen depreciation and appreciation)
