Business Details

A segment handling optical component parts covering a wide range of applications from research and development to industrial use. Composed of three product groups: Basic Optical Equipment Products (stages, holders, etc.), Automated Application Products (automated positioning units, alignment systems, etc.), and Optical Elements & Thin-Film Products (mirrors, lenses, filters, etc.). Main customers include universities and research institutions in Japan and overseas, the electronic components/semiconductor-related electronics industry, and the bio industry, with offerings ranging from catalog sales to one-off custom orders and medium-volume OEM production. Characterized by global expansion through overseas subsidiaries in the U.S., Europe, and Asia. In the current fiscal year, a China procurement subsidiary (Shanghai Sigma Integrated International Trading Co., Ltd.) was added to the scope of consolidation.

Recent Overview

Net sales increased slightly, but operating income decreased slightly due to sluggish demand for optics for electronics applications

In the Component Parts Business for FY2026 (ending May 2026), net sales including intersegment sales were ¥9,831 million (up 0.8% year on year), while operating income decreased slightly to ¥1,636 million (down 0.4% year on year). The price revision effect, strong performance of alignment systems, and resolution of inventory adjustments for bio-microscope stages contributed positively, but sluggishness in lenses, mirrors, and similar products for major customers in the electronics field weighed on results. The environment remained challenging through the third quarter but improved from the fourth quarter onward. In the current period, the China procurement subsidiary (Shanghai Sigma Integrated International Trading Co., Ltd.) was added to the scope of consolidation, strengthening the global production system.

Key Products

product
Basic Optical Equipment Products

Handles stages, holders, bases, rods, post stands, clamps, cage systems, etc. for research and development and industrial applications. The effect of the price revision implemented in January 2025 was realized throughout the current period, and demand remained solid for stages and other products used in embedded applications for manufacturing and inspection equipment for overseas regions and the electronics field.

product
Automated Application Products

Handles automated positioning/orientation units, alignment systems, optical measurement/control units, measurement/control software, etc. Bio-microscope stages performed solidly as inventory adjustments at a major customer in the bio industry were resolved, while alignment systems for research and development applications and the electronics industry performed well. Demand for alignment systems related to photonic integrated circuits (PIC) and optical-electronic convergence is also on an increasing trend.

product
Optical Elements & Thin-Film Products

Handles multi-element optics, mirrors, beam splitters, filters, lenses, prisms, polarizers, substrates, windows, etc. While demand for overseas regions trended toward recovery, with spherical lenses and similar products performing solidly, lenses, mirrors, and other products used in embedded applications for manufacturing and inspection equipment for certain major customers in the electronics field remained sluggish.

Growth Drivers

  • Expected recovery in demand for Optical Elements & Thin-Film Products against the backdrop of a recovery trend in demand from the electronic components/semiconductor industry
  • Increasing trend in demand for alignment systems related to photonic integrated circuits (PIC) and optical-electronic convergence
  • Continued recovery in demand from industrial fields in overseas regions (the U.S., China, Southeast Asia, etc.)
  • Improvement in sales unit prices through continued price pass-through, mainly for catalog sales products
  • Strengthening of the global production and procurement system through the consolidation of Shanghai Sigma Integrated International Trading Co., Ltd.
  • Firm trend in demand from research and development fields such as universities and government institutions in Southeast Asia, centered on quantum-related fields
  • Solid performance of bio-microscope stages for the bio industry following resolution of inventory adjustments

Risks

  • Risk of continued sluggish demand for lenses, mirrors, and similar products used in embedded applications for manufacturing and inspection equipment for major customers in the electronics field
  • Decline in profit margin due to increased personnel expenses and depreciation associated with expanded human capital and capital investment
  • Impact on overseas demand from uncertainty surrounding U.S. trade policy (reciprocal tariffs) and heightened geopolitical risk
  • Foreign exchange fluctuation risk (foreign currency-denominated transactions associated with global expansion)
  • China business risk (deterioration in the business environment for Shanghai Sigma Koki Co., Ltd. and Shanghai Sigma Integrated International Trading Co., Ltd.)
  • Risk of recurrence of inventory adjustments by major customers in the bio industry
