Business

Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. was spun off from Yamaha Corporation in 1955 and is a Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market-listed comprehensive mobility manufacturer headquartered in Iwata City, Shizuoka Prefecture. With 170 domestic and overseas companies (148 subsidiaries and 22 affiliates), it operates across six segments: Land Mobility (Motorcycles・Electrically Power Assisted Bicycles), Marine (Outboard Motors・Water Vehicles), Outdoor Land Vehicles (All-Terrain Vehicles (ATV)・Golf Cars), Robotics (Semiconductor Back-End Manufacturing Equipment・Surface Mounters), Financial Services, and Others (Mobility Services, etc.). Its major customers range widely, from motorcycle users in emerging Asian countries to leisure and marine enthusiasts in North America and semiconductor manufacturing equipment makers, with revenue for FY2025 (ending December 2025) reaching ¥2,534,203 million.

Business Model

With product sales in the core businesses (MC and Marine) as the mainstay, group financial subsidiaries (Yamaha Motor Finance Corporation, etc.) provide sales financing and leasing, securing continuous revenue even after product sales. The sales financing receivables balance reached ¥799,253 million at the end of 2025, forming a structure in which growth in product sales directly translates into expanded financial revenue. By combining mass-market sales in emerging Asian countries with a premium strategy, the company reduces risk through diversification across regions and products.

Company Strengths

Motorcycle sales volume for FY2025 (ending December 2025) was approximately 4.99 million units (up 0.8% year on year), with Asia accounting for more than 3.9 million units. Sales volumes increased in Indonesia, the Philippines, and Thailand, and revenue from emerging markets reached ¥1,191,600 million (up 1.7% year on year). Years of established local production and sales networks form a barrier to entry.

The Marine business achieved an operating margin of 10.2% in FY2025 (ending December 2025), the highest level among all segments. Outboard motor production volume increased 20.0% year on year to 271,174 units, maintaining solid sales in the US and European markets. The company is driving higher value-added offerings through integrated boat systems such as the Helm Master EX wireless station.

The Financial Services segment posted operating income of ¥21,056 million (operating margin of 18.5%) for FY2025 (ending December 2025). The sales financing receivables balance continued to expand, reaching ¥799,253 million (an increase of approximately ¥59,000 million year on year), functioning as a stable revenue source that offsets fluctuations in product sales.

ENVALITH's Perspective

Revenue of ¥730,121 million (up 16.6% year on year), operating profit of ¥62,635 million (up 43.8% year on year), and profit attributable to owners of parent for the quarter of ¥41,260 million (up 34.5% year on year) in the first quarter of FY2026 (ending December 2026) demonstrate a clear recovery from the sharp deterioration in the same period of the previous year. Against the full-year forecast (revenue of ¥2,700,000 million, operating profit of ¥180,000 million, and profit attributable to owners of parent of ¥100,000 million), the progress rate of operating profit as of the first quarter stood at approximately 34.8%, indicating steady progress, and the likelihood of achieving the full-year forecast has increased.

In the Marine segment, operating profit declined 19.2% year on year despite an increase in revenue, while the Outdoor Land Vehicles segment posted an operating loss of ¥7.8 billion (compared with an operating loss of ¥4.2 billion in the same period of the previous year), with the loss widening. In both cases, the impact of U.S. tariffs is explicitly cited as the main cause, indicating that external factor risk remains a drag on earnings. Depending on the future direction of U.S. tariff policy, there is a possibility of downside risk to the full-year earnings forecast, which warrants continued close monitoring.

In January 2026, the company acquired the 49% non-controlling interest in Yamaha Motor Taiwan Co., Ltd. (YMT) for ¥38,868 million, making it a wholly owned subsidiary. As a result, non-controlling interests decreased significantly from ¥66,091 million to ¥40,600 million, and capital surplus also decreased by ¥19,355 million. Meanwhile, interest-bearing debt (excluding lease liabilities) increased to ¥1,181,800 million (up ¥137,500 million from the end of the previous fiscal year), and the net D/E ratio rose to 0.64x (from 0.58x at the end of the previous fiscal year). The ratio of equity attributable to owners of parent also declined to 37.7% (from 39.0% at the end of the previous fiscal year), and trends in financial leverage warrant continued monitoring.

Growth Strategy

Reinforcing the competitiveness of core businesses and monetizing strategic businesses to achieve portfolio management

In addition to normalizing production and shipments after their suspension in Vietnam, the company is promoting increased sales volumes in emerging markets, centered on Thailand, India, and the Philippines. In Q1 of FY2026 (ending March 2026), Land Mobility revenue was ¥479,944 million (up 23.7% year on year) and operating income was ¥48,976 million (up 76.3% year on year), achieving substantial profit growth, with the strategy steadily producing results.

The company is promoting higher value-added products through an expanded lineup of large outboard motors and an integrated boat system. Demand has grown not only in North America and Europe but also in emerging markets in Asia and Latin America, securing Q1 FY2026 (ending March 2026) revenue of ¥148,597 million (up 6.0% year on year). However, operating income declined due to the impact of U.S. tariffs, making cost response a challenge.

The company is rebuilding the profit base of the RV and Golf Cars businesses, whose main market is North America. In Q1 of FY2026 (ending March 2026), the operating loss widened to ¥7,787 million (compared with an operating loss of ¥4,229 million in the same period of the previous year), directly impacted by U.S. tariffs. Improving profitability through cost management and optimized resource allocation is an urgent priority.

The company is promoting the integration of Shinkawa, Apic Yamada, and PFA through the establishment of Yamaha Robotics Co., Ltd. It is capturing growing demand for Semiconductor Back-End Manufacturing Equipment for generative AI and advanced packaging, achieving a turnaround to operating income of ¥710 million in Q1 of FY2026 (ending March 2026) (compared with an operating loss of ¥703 million in the same period of the previous year). Sales of Surface Mounters in China have also been strong.

In January 2026, the company acquired the 49% non-controlling interest in Yamaha Motor Taiwan Co., Ltd. (YMT) for ¥38,868 million, making it a wholly owned subsidiary. This was treated as a capital transaction that did not involve a change in the scope of consolidation, enabling faster decision-making and full capture of earnings in the Taiwan motorcycle business.
