Business Details
Based on the core principle of "We're For Creators," the company provides handy audio recorders, digital mixers, multi-effects processors, and other products to creators worldwide. Development is handled by the Japanese head office, while production is fully outsourced to EMS companies in China and Southeast Asia. North America, Europe, and Japan are the main markets, with sales conducted through consolidated subsidiaries such as ZOOM North America LLC, Mogar Music S.r.l., and Sound-Service GmbH. Major customers are Thomann GmbH (16.7% of net sales) and Amazon.com, Inc. (16.3% of net sales).
Recent Overview
Q1 FY2026 net sales rose 17.4% and operating profit turned positive, but a special loss was recorded due to a tax audit at a European subsidiary
In Q1 FY2026 (January to March 2026), net sales reached ¥4,447 million (up 17.4% year-on-year), driven mainly by favorable yen depreciation/euro appreciation translation effects and the recovery in handy audio recorder sales (up 59.0% year-on-year). Reductions in selling, general and administrative expenses also contributed, resulting in operating profit of ¥216 million and ordinary profit of ¥164 million, turning positive from losses in the same period of the prior year. On the other hand, due to a tax audit of a European subsidiary by overseas tax authorities, an estimated additional value-added tax assessment of ¥119 million relating to prior fiscal years was recorded as an extraordinary loss, resulting in a quarterly net loss attributable to owners of parent of ¥34 million. In addition, following a ruling that the U.S. IEEPA reciprocal tariffs were unlawful, the U.S. subsidiary has filed for a refund; however, as the amount and timing of any refund remain undetermined, no amount has been recorded in the current period's results. There is no change to the full-year earnings forecast (net sales of ¥17,500 million, operating profit of ¥650 million).
Key Products
Growth Drivers
- Continued effect of the new "Studio Series" handy audio recorder and sales recovery from the resolution of "Essential Series" market inventory
- Expansion of Sound Service brands (up 24.0% year-on-year in Q1 FY2026) and increased yen-translated sales due to euro appreciation
- Market penetration since September 2025 of three new digital mixer models (L6max, P4next, L12next)
- Reduction in selling, general and administrative expenses through cost reduction activities (Q1 FY2026: ¥1,514 million, down 1.0% year-on-year)
- Lowering of the break-even point through structural reforms (full-year operating profit for FY2026, ending December 2026, forecast to turn positive at ¥650 million)
- Earnings contribution from steady digital mixer sales in the European market and the effect of euro appreciation
Risks
- Rising cost of sales and deteriorating profitability in the North American market due to persistently high U.S. reciprocal tariffs (IEEPA), with the refund application still pending and the amount and timing of any refund undetermined
- Risk of continued tax audits of European subsidiaries by overseas tax authorities (an estimated ¥119 million in prior-year value-added tax assessments was recorded as an extraordinary loss in Q1 FY2026)
- Expansion of substitute demand for general-purpose recording applications due to the spread of smartphones and wireless microphones (structural impact on the Essential Series)
- Continued inventory adjustment following the post-pandemic demand surge and ongoing weak sales across the musical instrument-related equipment retail market amid consumers' thrift-oriented spending
- Foreign exchange risk (the majority of net sales are denominated in U.S. dollars and euros; a shift toward yen appreciation would reduce yen-translated sales)
- Continued sales decline in professional field recorders and handy video recorders due to the absence of new products
- Decline in multi-effects processor sales as the effect of new products fades (down 15.3% year-on-year in Q1 FY2026)
