Business

Kitagawa Iron Works Co., Ltd. is a comprehensive manufacturing group founded in 1918 and headquartered in Fuchu City, Hiroshima Prefecture. The company consists of four segments: the Machine Tool Accessories Business, which commands a majority share of the domestic market for Lathe Chucks; the Industrial Machinery Business, which handles Concrete Plants & Mixers, climbing cranes, and Self-Propelled Multi-Level Parking Systems; the Metal Materials Business, which manufactures cast parts for automobiles, construction, and agricultural machinery; and the Semiconductor-Related Business, which develops semiconductor manufacturing equipment and precision polishing equipment. The group, including 9 subsidiaries and 2 affiliated companies, recorded consolidated net sales of ¥58,415 million (FY2026, ending March 2026). Major customers include Kubota Corporation (15.6% of net sales), and the company provides products and services broadly to the manufacturing, construction, and semiconductor industries both domestically and internationally.

Business Model

While manufacturing and selling products forms the base of each segment, the Industrial Machinery Business benefits from concrete plant maintenance work functioning as a stable revenue source. In the Machine Tool Accessories Business, the company is pursuing overseas expansion by leveraging its global sales network (China, India, Mexico, Thailand, Europe, and North America). In the Semiconductor-Related Business, in addition to equipment sales, the company is capturing recurring revenue from consumables sales and contract processing. Under the long-term management plan "Plus Decade 2031," the company has set a target of ¥100.0 billion in consolidated net sales for fiscal year 2031.

Company Strengths

Lathe Chucks, the core product of the Machine Tool Accessories Business, have established themselves as a globally recognized brand holding a majority share of the domestic market, supported by a global sales and production network with local subsidiaries in Shanghai, Shenyang, India, Mexico, Thailand, Europe, and North America. In FY2026 (ending March 2026), overseas sales related to EMS increased, centered on China and India, and sales in the Machine Tool Accessories Business rose 9.3% year on year to ¥9,870 million.

The Industrial Machinery Business (Kitagawa Sun Tech Company) achieved sales of ¥22,003 million, segment profit of ¥2,806 million, and a profit margin of 12.8% in FY2026 (ending March 2026). Continued expansion of maintenance work for Concrete Plants, increased sales of large climbing cranes, and the brand strength of the patented Self-Propelled Multi-Level Parking System "Super Long Span" collectively supported earnings, resulting in a substantial 68.2% increase in profit year on year.

The Metal Materials Business had posted a segment loss of ¥128 million in the previous fiscal year, but in FY2026 (ending March 2026) it recorded a segment profit of ¥606 million, returning to profitability, driven by improved fixed cost efficiency from higher line utilization rates, cost structure reforms such as improved yield and process rationalization, and greater efficiency in indirect operations. Optimization of selling prices (setting standards based on marginal profit margins) also contributed to the improvement in earnings, reflecting ongoing structural improvement in profitability.

ENVALITH's Perspective

Net income attributable to owners of the parent for FY2026 (ending March 2026) rose sharply to ¥3,128 million (up 150.9% year on year), but the main driver was a one-time extraordinary gain of ¥2,369 million from the sale of fixed assets by the company and its Thai subsidiary. Ordinary income increased only 9.9% year on year to ¥2,545 million, and the operating margin remained low at 4.6%. The forecast for net income in FY2027 (ending March 2026) is ¥2,000 million (down 36.1% year on year), a significant decline, and improving underlying earnings power once the extraordinary gain fades remains an ongoing challenge.

In FY2026 (ending March 2026), segment profit in the Industrial Machinery Business rebounded sharply, rising 68.2% year on year to ¥2,806 million, leading the improvement in group-wide operating profit (up 43.6% year on year). Meanwhile, despite an increase in sales, the Machine Tool Accessories Business saw segment profit plunge 48.3% year on year to ¥221 million due to one-time costs such as factory relocation expenses. The Semiconductor-Related Business also deteriorated significantly, with sales down 29.1% and profit down 76.3% due to the loss of large-scale projects. In the external environment, US-China trade friction and Middle East geopolitical risks are heightening demand uncertainty, and the widening profitability gap between segments has emerged as a portfolio risk.

The Metal Materials Business achieved a turnaround to profitability in FY2026 (ending March 2026), posting segment profit of ¥606 million (versus a loss of ¥128 million in the prior period), reflecting the results of cost structure reforms. However, production volume at the Mexican subsidiary has declined due to reduced output by automakers amid the semiconductor shortage and lower demand for cast parts, and as an external factor, sensitivity to US trade policy risk (such as tariff increases) remains high. Achieving the next period's forecast of sales of ¥25,800 million and operating profit of ¥1,100 million will depend on the recovery of the Mexican site's operating rate and progress in developing new customers.

Growth Strategy

Aiming for net sales of ¥100,000 million by 2031 through selection and concentration, higher value-added products, and FX/DX promotion

Transitioning from 'product sales' of Lathe Chucks to 'solution sales' that add engineering services, launching high-value-added products and automation packages for semiconductor, aircraft, medical, and energy applications. Expanding global market share through enhanced local production in India and strengthened after-sales service in Mexico and Vietnam. Targeting net sales of ¥10,800 million and operating profit of ¥540 million for the next fiscal year.

Promoting design efficiency improvements in the Concrete Plants & Mixers business to shorten lead times and introduce high-value-added options, expanding market share in large climbing cranes, and strengthening the SLS brand for Self-Propelled Multi-Level Parking Systems. Aiming for early establishment of new businesses in the environmental field, including rental business, CO2 fixation technology, and vertical solid-liquid separation systems (LCSS). Targeting net sales of ¥21,800 million and operating profit of ¥1,970 million for the next fiscal year.

Promoting optimization of selling prices through the establishment of marginal profit ratio standards, and expanding production capacity through cost reduction and defect rate reduction. Establishing a production system capable of handling low-volume, high-mix, and prototype businesses to expand the business domain. Achieved a return to profitability in FY2026 (ending March 2026) (segment profit of ¥606 million), and is targeting net sales of ¥25,800 million and operating profit of ¥1,100 million for the next fiscal year.

Aiming to expand orders for semiconductor-related equipment through the addition of sales offices and organizational restructuring. Accelerating product development utilizing the newly established R&D building at the Nagaoka Research Institute. Demand for consumables and contract processing related to AI has remained firm, and the company is targeting net sales of ¥2,600 million and operating profit of ¥300 million for the next fiscal year. Getting back on a recovery trajectory after the falloff of large-scale projects remains a challenge.

Promoting FX and DX across the entire company to achieve fundamental improvements in quality, cost, and delivery time. Strengthening human resource development and reskilling to cultivate 'thinking and acting talent' while maximizing synergies between departments to establish a robust management foundation. Positioned as foundational groundwork toward achieving the goals of the long-term management plan 'Plus Decade 2031'.
