Business Details

This segment engages in the design and development of machinery and machine components, as well as software development, using high-end 3D-CAD as a tool. Business operations are divided into Staffing Services and Contracted Services (Outsourced-type / On-site-type), with automobile manufacturers, parts manufacturers, home appliance manufacturers, and precision equipment manufacturers as key customers. The segment also provides 3D-CAD Training & Analysis Services. Automotive-related business accounts for the majority of net sales, with growth driven primarily by increases in the number of active engineers and improvements in unit pricing.

Recent Overview

Increases in active engineers and improved unit pricing drove both revenue and profit growth in H1, up year on year.

In the first half of FY2026 (ending March 2026) (October 2025 to March 2026), net sales of the Design & Development Outsourcing Business were ¥5,556 million (up 7.8% year on year), segment profit (operating profit) was ¥1,058 million (up 10.3% year on year), and the segment profit margin was 19.0%. The main drivers of increased revenue and profit were an increase in active engineers and improvements in unit pricing. Continued R&D investment toward decarbonization and next-generation technology development in the automotive industry has supported demand. On the other hand, the company notes it needs to closely monitor downside risks to the economy stemming from instability in the international situation.

Key Products

service
Staffing Services

A service format in which engineers capable of utilizing 3D-CAD and other tools are dispatched to automobile manufacturers, parts manufacturers, home appliance manufacturers, precision equipment manufacturers, and other clients. Engineers are stationed on-site at clients' design and development operations, handling upstream processes.

service
Contracted Services (Outsourced-type / On-site-type)

This includes a format in which design and development work is contracted from clients and deliverables are provided (Outsourced-type), as well as a format in which work is performed under contract while stationed at the client's site (On-site-type). Compared to Staffing Services, this offers higher added value, and expansion of its share of net sales contributes to improved profitability.

service
3D-CAD Training & Analysis Services

This service provides training on the operation and utilization of 3D-CAD for engineers at client companies, as well as design analysis services. It complements the core Design & Development Outsourcing Business and contributes to deepening relationships with clients.

Growth Drivers

  • Continued progress in unit price improvement (appropriate pricing based on technical capability and difficulty)
  • Expansion of high value-added sales through an increase in Contracted Services personnel
  • Expansion of active workforce through an increase in the number of engineers
  • Continued R&D investment toward decarbonization and next-generation technology development in the automotive industry
  • Diversification of clients into fields beyond automotive, such as electrical equipment (home appliances, etc.), information processing, software, and general machinery
  • Global expansion including offshore development through the establishment of a Vietnamese subsidiary (VIETNAM ABIST CO., LTD), which commenced operations in April 2025
  • Diversification and expansion of corporate demand for design and development outsourcing amid progress in DX

Risks

  • Customer concentration risk due to sales concentration with Toyota Motor Corporation (24.8% of net sales)
  • Automotive-related sales account for approximately 59.6% of the total, making the segment susceptible to fluctuations in the automotive industry's business cycle and trade policy
  • Intensifying competition for hiring and retaining engineers and rising personnel costs (risk of temporary profitability decline due to wage increases preceding other factors)
  • Impact on gross profit from a decline in engineer utilization rates
  • Risk of economic downturn due to trends in trade policy, such as increases in US tariff rates
  • While the Design & Development Outsourcing Business is in the upstream production process and thus has limited direct exposure to production cutbacks, there is potential for business impact if an economic downturn becomes severe
  • Deterioration of the order environment if adverse effects on the global economy from unstable international conditions intensify
