Business

Sumitomo Osaka Cement Co., Ltd. is a comprehensive materials manufacturer listed on the TSE Prime Market, formed in 1994 through the merger of Sumitomo Cement and Osaka Cement. The Cement business accounts for approximately 70% of consolidated net sales of ¥223,686 million (FY2026, ending March 2026). The company is organized into six segments: Cement; Mineral Products, covering limestone mining and aggregate sales; Building Materials, covering concrete repair materials and related construction; Optoelectronics, covering optical communication components and measuring instruments; New Materials, covering electronic materials for semiconductor manufacturing equipment; and Others, covering real estate leasing and software development. The group comprises 45 subsidiaries and 13 affiliated companies, and in addition to domestic manufacturing facilities, is expanding overseas through operations such as an Australian terminal business and an equity stake in the Philippines. Major customers span a wide range of industries, including construction and civil engineering contractors, steel manufacturers, and semiconductor manufacturing equipment makers.

Business Model

The company builds a vertically integrated value chain spanning cement and limestone manufacturing and mining, sales through specialty distributors, marine and land transportation, ready-mixed concrete production, and repair construction execution. In the Cement business, earnings are secured through domestic sales price increases and cost reductions achieved by utilizing fossil energy substitutes (waste and by-products). In the New Materials business, management resources are concentrated on high-performance electronic materials for semiconductor manufacturing equipment to pursue high profit margins. The stable earnings of the Mineral Products and Others businesses form a structure that underpins the overall earnings base.

Company Strengths

The company holds an integrated value chain within its own group, spanning limestone mine extraction (Akiyoshi Mining, Shiga Mining Industry, etc.), cement manufacturing (including Hachinohe Cement and Wakayama Blast Furnace Cement), maritime transport (SOC Logistics), sales via authorized distributors, and ready-mixed concrete manufacturing and repair construction work. This vertically integrated structure is the source of stable supply capability and cost control capability.

The New Materials segment achieved net sales of ¥18,074 million and an operating margin of 13.7% in FY2026 (ending March 2026), and is currently expanding production capacity through capital expenditure of ¥8,787 million (approximately 2.2 times the previous fiscal year). The segment has a track record of commercializing products such as electrostatic chucks for next-generation semiconductor manufacturing equipment, and continues to invest ¥1,757 million in R&D expenses to develop differentiated material technologies and low-cost process technologies.

The company is expanding the collection and acceptance/processing of fossil energy substitutes (waste and by-products) at its cement plants, contributing to earnings through both manufacturing cost reduction and waste processing revenue. Operating profit in the Cement segment reached ¥5,495 million in FY2026 (ending March 2026), up 526.0% year on year, confirming the combination of price revisions and cost structure improvements as a proven driver of earnings recovery.

ENVALITH's Perspective

Operating profit for FY2026 (ending March 2026) reached ¥13,648 million (up 45.9% year on year), achieving a significant increase in earnings. The main driver was a sharp recovery in the Cement segment's operating profit, from ¥877 million to ¥5,495 million, as the effect of price revisions combined with a reduction in cost of sales (from ¥169,388 million in the previous period to ¥167,034 million in the current period) to substantially lift the gross profit margin. Meanwhile, the structural decline in domestic cement demand (down 6.5% year on year) continues, and the sustainability of the price revision effects along with demand trends in the next fiscal year remain key points of focus.

In FY2026 (ending March 2026), the company recorded an impairment loss on fixed assets of ¥3,243 million (versus ¥14 million in the previous period) as an extraordinary loss. By segment, the main breakdown was Cement at ¥3,118 million, New Materials at ¥104 million, and Others at ¥20 million. While ordinary profit improved significantly, up 53.8% year on year to ¥14,405 million, net profit attributable to owners of the parent was limited to ¥11,214 million (up 24.5% year on year), as the impact of the extraordinary loss curbed profit growth. The forecast for FY2027 (ending March 2027) calls for net profit of ¥10,000 million (down 10.8% year on year), indicating an expected decline in profit, and continued management of impairment risk will be required.

The New Materials segment invested ¥8,787 million in capital expenditure, achieving net sales of ¥18,074 million and operating profit of ¥2,479 million, clearly showing a growth trajectory. Meanwhile, the Optoelectronics segment's loss narrowed from ¥355 million in the previous period to ¥56 million, but it remains in the red. Under the medium-term management plan for FY2026-28, the company has set a 3-year average total payout ratio of 50% or more and a minimum dividend of ¥120, which can be evaluated positively for the stability of shareholder returns. However, while return on equity of 5.8% (up from 4.7% in the previous period) shows an improving trend, further enhancement of capital efficiency remains a point of interest for investors.

Growth Strategy

Pursuing both stabilization of earnings from existing businesses and expansion of growth fields, while advancing improvements in capital efficiency and shareholder returns

Continued implementation of price revisions in response to cost increases, achieving Cement business operating profit of ¥5,495 million (up 526% year on year) in FY2026 (ending March 2026). The company aims to build a revenue base to offset shrinking domestic demand through expanded use of waste and by-products as raw fuel substitutes and expansion of overseas business, including the Australian terminal business.

Capital expenditure in the New Materials segment was expanded to ¥8,787 million in FY2026 (ending March 2026), approximately 2.2 times the previous year, achieving net sales of ¥18,074 million and operating profit of ¥2,479 million. Positioned as the core of "expansion of growth fields" under the FY2026-28 Medium-Term Management Plan, the company will continue to pursue capacity expansion and next-generation product development.

The Optoelectronics segment narrowed its loss from ¥355 million in the previous period to ¥56 million, driven by cost reductions in Optical Communication Components, among other factors. Increased sales volume of Optical Measuring Instruments (up 8.9% year on year in net sales) also contributed. The company will continue to develop and build mass-production capabilities for next-generation Optical Communication Components, aiming for an early return to profitability.

The company is pursuing new business development in the decarbonization field, including product development using artificial limestone. Addressing carbon neutrality as a cement manufacturer is a prerequisite for medium- to long-term business continuity, and this is positioned as part of strengthening the management foundation under the FY2026-28 Medium-Term Management Plan as well.

Under the FY2026-28 Medium-Term Management Plan, the company will maintain a total payout ratio of 50% or more on a three-year average basis, while setting a minimum annual dividend of ¥120 per share. The dividend payout ratio for FY2026 (ending March 2026) was 34.3% (total dividends of ¥3,811 million). Share buybacks were also continued (¥5,018 million acquired during the period), aiming to improve capital efficiency.
