Business

Nihon Pigment Holdings Co., Ltd., founded in 1925, is a specialized manufacturer of color-related products, producing and selling Resin Compound, Colorants for Resin (Masterbatch, Dry Color), and Processed Colors (including Liquid Dispersions). Domestically, manufacturing operations are handled by Nihon Pigment Co., Ltd., PLASiST Co., Ltd., Nagoya Pigment Co., Ltd., Tokyo Pigment Co., Ltd., and Osaka Pigment Co., Ltd., while overseas the group operates subsidiaries in Malaysia, Indonesia, and China. Major customers span a broad range of industries including automobiles, home appliances/OA equipment, food and beverages, textiles, and building materials. Consolidated net sales for FY2026 (ending March 2026) were ¥42,225 million. In October 2024, the company transitioned to a holding company structure, strengthening group governance.

Business Model

Building on long-accumulated "colorant selection and formulation technology" and "advanced dispersion technology" as its core, the company manufactures and sells small-lot, multi-variety colorants and Resin Compounds tailored to customers' final product specifications. Domestic factories and overseas local subsidiaries handle manufacturing, and technology is also provided to overseas affiliated companies through technical support agreements. Revenue is primarily derived from product sales consideration, and the structure is transitioning to one in which the holding company receives management fees from its subsidiaries.

Company Strengths

The company possesses "colorant selection and formulation technology" and "advanced dispersion technology" accumulated since its founding in 1925, enabling it to address diverse applications including automobiles, home appliances, OA equipment, film, and electronic materials. It has also expanded into research and development of high-value-added products such as liquid dispersions for image sensors and conductive materials for semiconductors, demonstrating a broad range of technology applications.

In July 2024, the company consolidated former Sumika Color Co., Ltd. (now PLASiST Corporation), resulting in a significant improvement in the Japan segment, with net sales of ¥26,224 million (up 16.4% year on year) and operating profit of ¥1,204 million (versus ¥6 million in the previous period). The rationalization effects from integrated manufacturing and sales operations, as well as price revision effects, contributed to this earnings improvement track record.

The company has manufacturing subsidiaries in Malaysia, Indonesia, and China, and has built a multi-polar structure that also provides technology to affiliated companies in South Korea and Taiwan through technical assistance agreements. In China, it implemented fixed cost reductions through site consolidation (dissolution of Tianjin Bimet), achieving a turnaround to profitability in FY2026 (ending March 2026) with operating profit of ¥144 million.

ENVALITH's Perspective

Operating profit for FY2026 (ending March 2026) increased sharply to ¥1,509 million (up 754.8% year on year), and the operating margin improved from 0.5% to 3.6%. However, this remains at a low level compared with peers, and further deepening of PLASiST integration synergies along with continued price pass-through will be key to further margin improvement. The operating margin forecast for FY2027 (ending March 2027) is approximately 3.9% (¥1,700 million / ¥43,500 million), indicating a gradual improvement is expected.

Profit attributable to owners of parent for FY2026 (ending March 2026) appears to have decreased sharply to ¥1,159 million (down 76.9% year on year); however, the prior period included a negative goodwill gain of ¥6,822 million recognized in connection with a stock acquisition. Excluding extraordinary income and looking at the ordinary income basis, profit actually increased 346.6%, indicating substantial underlying improvement. Investors should be mindful of the comparison against the prior period's one-off gain. Also, an impairment loss of ¥311 million was recorded in the current period, and the soundness of assets remains an ongoing issue.

Cash flow from operating activities for FY2026 (ending March 2026) improved significantly to ¥4,712 million (compared to ¥-414 million in the prior period), mainly due to the collection of trade receivables. The equity ratio also rose from 44.5% to 49.2%, indicating an improved financial position. On the other hand, in the Southeast Asia segment, against a backdrop of struggling Japanese-affiliated customers, sales decreased 0.3% year on year to ¥12,361 million, and operating profit decreased 22.7% year on year to ¥162 million, remaining sluggish. As an external factor, the pace of recovery in demand from the automotive and home appliance sectors will influence future performance.

Growth Strategy

Aiming for sustainable growth through maximizing integration synergies, continuing price pass-through, and improving profitability of overseas operations

Deepen the integration effects with PLASiST, consolidated in July 2024, to draw out synergies across procurement, manufacturing, and sales. In FY2026 (ending March 2026), the Japan segment's operating profit improved significantly to ¥1,204 million, confirming concrete results from the integration effect. The company will continue to promote improved profitability through integration.

Pass on increases in raw material prices and labor costs both domestically and internationally to sales prices in order to maintain and improve margins. In FY2026 (ending March 2026), results from price revisions were confirmed across the Resin Compound, Colorants for Resin, and Processed Color divisions, and the company plans to continue this effort in FY2027 (ending March 2026) as well.

Through rationalization effects from consolidating sites and promoting sales expansion to domestic Chinese companies, the China segment turned profitable in FY2026 (ending March 2026), posting operating profit of ¥143 million (compared to an operating loss of ¥39 million in the previous period). The company will continue to reduce dependence on Japanese-affiliated customers and diversify its local customer base to firmly establish this profitability.

Against a backdrop of struggles among Japanese-affiliated customers, Southeast Asia segment operating profit in FY2026 (ending March 2026) was sluggish at ¥162 million, down 22.7% year on year. The company aims to achieve a recovery in profitability by capturing the recovery in hybrid vehicle demand amid a swing back in the EV market and expanding adoption of high-functionality materials for next-generation mobility. Demand trends for automotive and home appliance applications remain a key external factor.
