Business Details
In addition to manufacturing and selling carpets (commercial and residential), curtains, wallpaper/wall coverings, and various flooring materials, the segment operates the "Space Design Business," which provides integrated space design, construction, and supervision services. Main customers include office buildings, commercial facilities, general households, and medical/welfare facilities, with differentiation centered on the environmentally conscious product "ECOS®" and high-value-added rug series. In FY2026 (ending May 2026), profitability improved significantly due to an increase in the number of commercial carpet installation projects and the effects of expanded sales of high-value-added products and price revisions.
Recent Overview
Segment profit rose sharply, up 42.2% year on year, driven by increased commercial carpet sales and the effect of price revisions
In the Interior Business for FY2026 (ending May 2026), sales were ¥39,260 million (up 2.6% year on year) and segment profit was ¥1,455 million (up 42.2% year on year). For commercial carpets, the number of "ECOS®" installation projects increased, mainly centered on office buildings, up 5.0% year on year. The Space Design Business saw solid orders for large-scale commercial facilities, up 12.5% year on year. The effect of the previous period's price revisions for tile carpet and wallpaper, along with expanded sales of high-value-added products, contributed to the improvement in profit margin. On the other hand, residential carpets continued to struggle, down 2.9% year on year due to sluggish market conditions, and curtains were down 4.5% year on year due to delayed sales progress of new products.
Key Products
Growth Drivers
- Expansion in the number of "ECOS®" commercial tile carpet installation projects driven by environmental appeal (up 5.0% year on year in FY2026, ending May 2026)
- Increase in orders for large-scale commercial facilities in the Space Design Business (up 12.5% year on year in FY2026, ending May 2026)
- Improved profitability from the effect of tile carpet and wallpaper price revisions
- Lineup expansion and new sales channel development through the Custom Order Rug Series for the mid-to-high-end zone (launch of Epilogue)
- Increased revenue in wall covering-related products by capturing security and heat-shielding demand for window film (up 3.1% year on year)
- Response to increased renovation projects for hotels and existing offices amid the recovery in inbound demand
Risks
- Market contraction due to a decline in the number of new housing starts in Japan (down 5.3% year on year in FY2026, ending May 2026) and a decline in non-residential floor area starts (down 14.3%)
- Sluggish sales due to intensifying competition and weak market conditions in the residential carpet and curtain markets (residential carpets down 2.9% year on year, curtains down 4.5% year on year)
- Cost pressure risk from persistently high raw material and energy prices
- Risk that the sales expansion effect of new products for the mid-to-high-end zone (such as Epilogue) will remain limited
- Risk of continued sluggish sales of curtains, etc. for medical, welfare, and educational facilities
- Risk of rising imported raw material costs due to yen depreciation
