Business

Kawada Technologies is a pure holding company centered on Kawada Industries, comprising 14 subsidiaries and 12 affiliated companies. Its core businesses consist of the Steel Structures Segment, which handles the design, fabrication, and erection of steel bridges and building steel frames; the Civil Engineering Segment, covering PC Bridge Construction, Preflex Beam Bridge Construction, and Bridge Maintenance Construction; and the Building Construction Segment, covering General Building Construction Contracting and System Building Construction Contracting. In addition, the Solutions Segment, which offers 3D CAD & Cloud Service In-house Product Software and Next-Generation Industrial Robots (Humanoid/Dual-Arm), is positioned as a growth business. Major customers are public sector clients such as the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism and expressway companies, as well as private developers accessed through major general contractors, with aging infrastructure renewal, redevelopment of major metropolitan areas, and logistics facility construction serving as the key markets.

Business Model

The three core segments adopt a made-to-order contracting approach, handling everything from design to fabrication and erection in an integrated manner, generating revenue through technical proposal capabilities and design change acquisition in highly difficult construction projects. The Solutions Segment has a recurring revenue model based on licensing and cloud services for in-house product software as well as robot sales, complementing the group's overall profit margin. The profit and loss of Sato Kogyo Co., Ltd. (equity stake of 49.9%), an equity-method affiliate, also significantly affects results below ordinary profit.

Company Strengths

The consolidated order backlog at the end of FY2026 (ending March 2026) stood at ¥178,306 million (up 6.2% year-on-year). The Steel Structures Segment alone reached ¥104,794 million (up 9.9% year-on-year), the highest level on record. Kawada Industries' non-consolidated carried-forward construction value for the next fiscal period of ¥121,922 million includes large-scale projects such as the Nagoya Expressway, Shin-Meishin Expressway, and Metropolitan Expressway renewal works, securing capacity for revenue recognition spanning multiple years.

Kawada Industries operates as an integrated fabricator capable of both manufacturing and constructing steel bridges and building steel frames, enabling selective order-taking for high-difficulty projects. In FY2026 (ending March 2026), despite a decline in revenue, the Steel Structures Segment secured a 0.7% year-on-year increase in operating profit, supported by design-change gains obtained on large-scale construction projects.

The Solutions Segment recorded revenue of ¥8,197 million against operating profit of ¥3,098 million (operating margin of approximately 37.8%). Backed by tailwinds from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism's principle of mandatory BIM/CIM application, the 3D CAD & Cloud Service In-house Product Software business continues to expand, maintaining stable growth in FY2026 (ending March 2026) with orders up 5.8%, revenue up 3.1%, and operating profit up 3.9% year-on-year.

ENVALITH's Perspective

The revenue decline in FY2026 (ending March 2025) [sic] is mainly attributable to a scheduling issue whereby, despite an ample order backlog, few projects contributed to output during the period, compounding the external factor of sluggish orders for new bridges. Given that the order backlog to be carried forward stands at ¥178,306 million, a record high, the sales decline can be interpreted as a temporary scheduling shift rather than a structural problem. However, the company's forecast for FY2027 (ending March 2027) (net sales of ¥125,000 million, operating profit of ¥7,200 million) anticipates a further 16.3% year-on-year decline in operating profit, warranting close attention to the pace of recovery.

Equity-method investment gains declined 24.7% from ¥3,052 million in FY2025 (ending March 2025) to ¥2,299 million in FY2026 (ending March 2025) [sic], meaning that the performance trends of affiliated companies have become a non-negligible factor in fluctuations in ordinary profit. With operating profit at ¥8,598 million, equity-method gains of ¥2,299 million account for roughly 20% of ordinary profit, making the transparency of the performance of affiliates such as Sato Kogyo a key issue for investment decisions. Achieving the FY2027 (ending March 2027) ordinary profit forecast of ¥9,500 million presupposes stability in equity-method gains.

ROE for FY2026 (ending March 2025) [sic] declined to 9.2% (from 12.8% in the prior period). In addition to the decline in net income, the increase in shareholders' equity from ¥91,062 million to ¥98,955 million acted to expand the denominator. While the company is said to have achieved its ROE target under the Third Medium-Term Management Plan, it intends to continue ROE-focused management with an awareness of capital costs under the Fourth Medium-Term Management Plan (FY2026-FY2028). With net assets per share at ¥1,891.42 (adjusted for the stock split), attention is focused on whether the company can improve capital efficiency while maintaining a dividend payout ratio of 30%.

Growth Strategy

Under the 4th Medium-Term Management Plan (FY2026–FY2028), the company promotes ROE-focused management by strengthening the profit base of existing businesses and expanding growth businesses.

Backed by the next-period carryover balance of ¥178,306 million (a record high), the company steadily advances revenue recognition on projects entering full-scale construction. It aims to recover sales by capturing large-scale renewal work ordered by expressway companies and planned large-scale steel bridge project orders. The company will also continue to add to profit by leveraging its capability to secure design changes.

In-house product software, including 3D CAD & Cloud Service In-house Product Software, continues to perform well. Riding the tailwind of DX promotion in the construction industry, the company plans to actively allocate management resources to this area as a "growth business" under the 4th Medium-Term Management Plan. Kawada Robotics' industrial robot business is also capturing labor-saving demand in the manufacturing industry.

The company achieved its ROE target and 30% dividend payout ratio target under the 3rd Medium-Term Management Plan. It will continue to promote ROE-focused management under the 4th Medium-Term Management Plan as well. The dividend payout ratio for FY2026 (ending March 2026) is 30.0% (annual dividend of ¥151, before the stock split). The 1-for-3 stock split effective April 1, 2026 aims to broaden the investor base and improve liquidity.

Amid continued increases in construction material and other costs driven by the weak yen, the company continues to pass through price increases to clients and improve productivity through efficient staff allocation and review of each process. To address the labor shortage among skilled workers, it also promotes labor-saving investment utilizing software and robots.
