Business Details

This is the core business engaged in the manufacture and sale of ham, sausages, and prepared processed foods, with a wide range of offerings to mass retailers, convenience stores, and the food service industry. In FY2026 (ending March 2026), net sales were ¥160,500 million, accounting for approximately 67% of consolidated net sales, making it the mainstay segment. Despite headwinds from rising raw material prices and cost increases, segment profit rose 37.3% year on year, driven by price revisions and continued cost reductions.

Recent Overview

Achieved higher sales and substantially higher profit, with segment profit margin improving from 3.1% to 4.2%

In FY2026 (ending March 2026), the Processed Foods Business achieved net sales of ¥160,500 million (up 1.8% year on year) and segment profit of ¥6,788 million (up 37.3% year on year). Although affected by rising raw material prices and increases in labor and logistics costs, the segment achieved substantial profit growth thanks to higher sales across divisions, price revisions, and the ongoing effects of cost reductions. Note that from this period, due to a change in the production system, part of the "Prepared Processed Foods Division" was reclassified into the "Ham and Sausage Division." Impairment losses declined from ¥568 million in the prior period to just ¥11 million in the current period, recorded solely in the Meat Business, with none recorded in the Processed Foods Business.

Sales expanded through the package renewal of the "Kunseiya" series, which marked its 30th anniversary, the year-round rollout of "Lemon & Parsley," and the introduction of three new flavors: "Umakara Chorizo," "Black Pepper," and "Melty Rich Cheese." The eco-conscious packaging "Tappuri Tsukaeru" series and value-pack wieners also performed well. The company also focused on expanding sales channels for commercial-use products aimed at the food service industry. Net sales for FY2026 (ending March 2026) were ¥74,499 million (up 1.9% year on year).

Retort curry sales held steady year on year, supported by expanded sales of "Bistro Club Rich Curry" and commercial-use curry. The "Sundubu" series launched a new product, "Garlic Sundubu," but overall soup category sales fell short of the prior year amid intensifying competition. "Salad Chicken" trended solidly on the back of health consciousness. Dessert products grew, driven by the "SWEET CAFE" series for mass retailers and new beverage and yogurt products for convenience stores. Net sales for FY2026 (ending March 2026) were ¥86,000 million (up 1.7% year on year).

Growth Drivers

  • Earnings improvement through price revisions (absorbing raw material price hikes and cost increases)
  • Sales expansion through continued promotional activities for mainstay products such as the "Kunseiya" series and the introduction of new flavors
  • Sales growth in desserts, yogurt, and beverages (through new product launches for mass retailers and convenience stores)
  • Expansion of sales channels for commercial-use products (curry, ham, sausage, etc.) aimed at the food service industry
  • Effects of continued cost reductions (production rationalization and logistics efficiency improvements)
  • Solid trends in health-conscious products such as "Salad Chicken"

Risks

  • Continued cost increases from rising raw material prices (higher local prices for imported meat and foreign exchange volatility) as well as rising labor and logistics costs
  • Impact on sales volume from growing consumer thrift-mindedness amid inflation
  • Intensifying competitive environment in retort curry, soups, and similar categories (weak performance in the "Chef no Takumi" series, etc.)
  • Uncertainty in the international situation, including the effects of U.S. trade policy
  • Raw material procurement risk from measures such as temporary import suspensions due to African Swine Fever (ASF), including for Spanish pork
  • Risk of future impairment losses associated with increased fixed asset investment (¥7,166 million in the current period)
